Chapter X

Since the night she encountered Eve alone on the streets of Harmony, Arianna had been searching non-stop through the archives looking for anything that may be of use to her. All of the things other hunters told her about Eve and other vampires were all lies. Everything that she ever believed in was a lie.

Walking over to her bed, she sat down and began to think of every single vampire she’d slain over the course of her short slaying career…if you called killing vampires a career anyways… She remembered the ones who begged her not to kill them, but she wouldn’t listen. She was brought up to believe that every vampire was evil and didn’t possess a soul, but when she met Eve, everything changed.

When word spread that she had survived an encounter with Eve, every hunter young and old wanted to know how she did it, but she refused to say a word. Soon after, many of the older hunters noticed the slight change in her demeanor. They said that even though she survived, she came back different. Sure she was different but she couldn’t tell them why.

With a roll of her eyes, Arianna stood up from her bed then walked over to her bedroom door…she needed some fresh air. Opening the door quickly, she was just about to step foot out into the hallway when someone appeared right in front of her.

“Gabriel!” Arianna shrieked, then placed her right hand over her heart. “What are you doing here?”

“I came to see you.” Gabriel answered in a thick Irish accent then pushed pass Arianna and entered her room.

‘What the hell is his problem?’ Arianna thought with a snort. “If you didn’t notice, I was just on my way out.”

“You’re not going anywhere.” He stated then turned and faced her.

“Who the hell do you think you are?!” Arianna spat then looked him up and down. The nerve of this bastard…

“I know what you did.” Gabriel replied then narrowed his eyes as confusion appeared on Arianna’s face.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Gabriel moved directly in front of her then leaned down to her left ear and whispered, “I followed you that night.”

Darkness loomed heavily over the streets of Harmony as Eve took a sneak peek around the cobblestone building, she and Julian were hiding behind. They had left Julian’s home a few hours earlier after Eve began picking up weird vibes everywhere. She sniffed a few times before signaling to Julian that the coast was clear. Not wanting to draw any unwanted attention towards the two of them, they decided that running down the street wasn’t such a good idea.

“So where is the nearest artillery shop Julian?” Eve asked as she kept her eyes straight ahead and her ears open. She didn’t need anyone jumping out on them…

“At the end of the block.” Julian said as he looked over his shoulder. It felt as if someone was watching the two of them.

Eve immediately picked up Julian’s wariness but kept her eyes ahead. “Julian, take it easy. Your scent just spiked. Relax.” She whispered.

“How can you be so calm at a time like this?” he mumbled.

“Because I have to be.” Eve answered softly. “Listen, I know someone is watching us, but I can’t pinpoint where.”

Then out of nowhere, shots rang out as people who had the nerve to be out at this time of night began scattering for cover. Eve grabbed hold of Julian’s hand then pulled him along until they were safe from the spray of bullets.

“What the hell!?!” Julian shouted as he and Eve hid on the side of the nearest building to the right of them.

“Julian, are you alright? You’re not hit are you?” Eve asked as she began checking for injuries on his body.

“I’m fine.” Julian said.

“Stay here.” Eve said then walked over to the side of the building and looked out. Looking up, she noticed movement on top of one of buildings from across the street. Narrowing her eyes, she saw the person reloading what looked to be sniper rifle.

“Eve…” Julian called but only received a snarl.

“That bastard is going down!” Eve sneered before flashing her fangs and light blue eyes. She then jumped up and disappeared on top of the building they were hiding behind. Her sudden movement startled Julian to the point where he fell backwards and landed on his back.

“Whoa…” He exclaimed in amusement as he looked to where she jumped.

Once the rifle was reloaded, the sniper aimed it back towards the streets in hopes of finding Eve but never had to change to as Eve dropped down in front of them and roughly threw them across the roofs surface. Scrambling to stand back up, they were knocked down again as Eve’s fist connected with the left side of their face. Eve then leaned over, grabbed the collar of their jacket and brought them roughly up to her face.

“I ought to break every last bone in your worthless, pathetic body.” Eve growled.

“Please don’t…” the person mumbled as blood spilled from the sides of their mouth.

“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t?”

“Because…” they breathed out roughly, “I’ll tell you everything you need to know.”

Eve looked the person dead in the eyes before saying, “If I think you’re lying to me, then I won’t hesitate to kill you.”

Arianna felt like kicking herself in the butt over and over and over again. No one was suppose to know, but somehow this leech of a bastard Gabriel knew…

Ugh…damn stalker…

“So…” she took her time, “what did you see?”

“Everything.” Gabriel replied. “How could you let her live after what she and her mate did to your kin?” he asked.

“That was a lie.” Arianna answered.

Stunned, “So you believe the word of a demon over the word of the brotherhood and the Book of Legends?” Gabriel asked her.

Arianna held her head up high, “Yes. The brotherhood has done nothing but lie to me. And now I’m not so sure that Book of Legends is even accurate.” She said nonchalantly.

Gabriel was furious! Never had he heard such lies before in all his life…

“How dare you…” he started but never finished.

“Don’t you dare come at me with that bullsh*t! All of what I ever believed in turned out to be lie…all of it! You didn’t see the way she looked at me. She didn’t know anything.” Arianna spat.

“I can’t believe you fell for every word she said.” Gabriel sighed then threw his hands up in the air. “Don’t you see, she used your…”

“She said that Sylvester was her mentor.” Arianna blurted out.

“What?!”

“She knows certain things that only us hunters should know. The day he died, didn’t match the day she said he did. Vampire or no vampire, the emotions that appeared on her face…there was no way she could’ve faked them.” Arianna whispered. “She’s different somehow Gabriel.”

“How? Vampires don’t have souls.” Gabriel stated.

“But Eve does…” Arianna then ran a hand through her hair. “I wonder why…”

Leaning against the side of the building picking at her nails, Eve waited for her would-be assassin to spill everything.

“I’m waiting.” She said impatiently as she continued picking at her nails.

“My name Joseph McAdams and I was sent by the brotherhood of hunters to bring you to their headquarters alive.” He answered.

“Why?” Eve asked. She really wanted to know…

“For months, I looked for you but nothing came up. Then word to spread that Dante had you.”

“Yes…the keyword was ‘had’.” Eve scoffed then rolled her eyes, “What else?”

“Everyone knows it’s impossible for vampires to walk in the light, but yet, you can. They want to know why.”

“Is that all?” Eve snarled. What the hell was wrong with these people?!

“Yes and no.” Joseph said.

“What do you mean?” Julian suddenly asked. There was no way he was going to be left out in the dark.

“If I tell you this, they’re gonna kill me.” Joseph mumbled.

“If you don’t tell me this, I’m gonna kill you.” Eve snapped and balled her fist up.

Joseph closed his eyes then lowered his head. It didn’t even matter anymore, he was dead anyways.

“I’ve been a member of the brotherhood since birth and I was brought up to believe that all who were not mortal, did not deserve to live, but that all changed one night. I accidentally overheard something I wasn’t suppose to and I’m being blackmailed to keep quiet.”

“What did you hear?” Eve demanded.

“I don’t think you want to know.” He mumbled.

Arianna paced back and forth across her bedroom floor. She still wanted to go out, but Gabriel wasn’t having that. Plus she needed to return back to Harmony. She had heard from a reliable source a few days ago that Eve had escaped. That’s the real reason why she wanted to go out to get some fresh air…

“Are you gonna turn me in or what?” she asked.

Gabriel was so deep in thought that he didn’t hear what she said.

“What?” he shook his head.

“I said, are you gonna turn me in or what?” Arianna replied in annoyed tone of voice. “I have defied the brotherhood’s oath after all.”

“No.”

“No…” she repeated slowly then raised a brow. What the hell?!

Gabriel walked over to where Arianna stood then placed his left hand on her right shoulder.

“I’ve been thinking about what you’ve said.” Gabriel paused. “I’ve never known you to be a liar, so I want to meet Eve for myself. If what you’ve told me is true, then I will help you anyway that I can.” He smiled sincerely.

Eve was fed up now! She pounced on Joseph before he even had the chance to blink.

“Tell me now!” She shouted, grabbed him forcefully by the collar of his jacket then bared her sharp fangs in his face.

“Please don’t make me…” Joseph cried out.

“Eve…” Julian called out to her. He then watched as she released Joseph’s collar suddenly, which caused him to lose his footing and drop down to the ground below before turning around in a huff and folding her arms. Turning back to Joseph, Julian decided that he would try. “What is it that you can’t tell us?”

Joseph trembled in fear but then became lost in his own thoughts. What if what was written in the Book of Legends wasn’t a lie? What if she really was the one? He took a deep breath, then preceded to tell them the rest.

“It was written in the Book of Legends that an impending silent war was going to break out between mortals and vampires in the year two thousand and six. Members of the brotherhood insisted that Dante, King of the Underworld and his mate,” Joseph pointed to Eve, “had also been researching ways for vampires to walk in the light. With vampires walking amongst the mortals in the daylight, us hunters wouldn’t know who were mortal or who were vampires.”

“I see.” Eve mumbled.

“What else?” Julian asked as he folded his arms.

Looking down at his hands, Joseph spoke, “Our head elder and the vampire Dante are brothers. Elder Amon, that’s his name, he was the one that helped Dante to take over the majority of the underworld all those years ago. He then had the Book of Legends altered so that no one knew that Dante had a brother. That’s where you come in. It now stated that with the majority of the underworld conquered, you and Dante split up to conquer the rest and that you were to meet up in the year two thousand and six. As for the silent war…because the book was altered, I’m not sure if it’s fact or fiction.”

“I’m confused.” Eve said.

“I found out the truth about everything and that’s why I’m being blackmailed, but I’m not the only one who knew. Sylvester Northridge knew the truth as well.” Joseph said then watched Eve’s expression closely. “Not only was he a hunter, but he was also the brotherhood’s historian. His grandfather Micah Northridge created the book along with the help of a young colored man by the name of Uriah.”

Julian turned to Eve then noticed how pale she looked. While he could tell that she knew of the men Joseph mentioned, it also looked like she didn’t want to believe any of it…

Eve shook her head in denial. She must’ve heard him wrong because he couldn’t have possibly said she thought he did….

“No…” Eve whispered and continued shaking her head side to side in denial. “It can’t be…”

“Eve, what is it?” Julian placed his hands on her shoulders.

“Uriah…?” she mumbled.

“Who is he?” Julian asked.

“H-He’s my father…”
