Chapter XXIII

Her head was throbbing painfully as she slowly opened her eyes and blinked a few times. Everything was a blur as a painful groan escaped her lips.

What happened?

Who was that person behind her?

And how come she didn’t detect their scent soon enough?

“My beautiful Eve. The only woman ever able to make me weak like this, make me follow behind her like some emotional fool. I told you I would have you again, but you wouldn’t listen.”

Another groan escaped Eve’s lips, not one of pain but one of irritation.

Why couldn’t this man take a hint?!

“Dante, really…this cat and mouse game is really getting old fast.” She scoffed.

“Indeed, which is why I’m gonna be the one to end it tonight by making you my mate, once and for all.” He smirked.

“You’re an idiot.” Eve rolled her eyes. “My kicking your ass didn’t teach you anything the last time? Julian is my mate, the only mate I will ever have!”

“Wrong. You are mine!”

“That’s what you think.” She smirked, a wicked gleam in her eyes.

{Flashback}

“So you just abandoned your wife and daughter?! You bastard!” Julian snarled.

“I didn’t want to but I had to do it. If I didn’t, then they would’ve been killed once they found out the truth. You don’t think I wish I could’ve stayed. I wanted to see my daughter grow up too, but I knew this would happen!” Uriah shouted.

“Then how are you still here and not dead?” Julian suddenly asked.

Uriah sighed. “I wasn’t completely truthful with the book. After my ‘supposed’ death, I kept the rest of my life hidden.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m the real reason Eve is the way she is, not Dante.”

{Flashback ends}

“What did you mean by that? How are you the real reason Eve is like this and not Dante?” Julian asked as he continued driving straight ahead.

“I didn’t find this out until a few years ago mind you, I don’t really how the hell that happened. Technology has come a long ways you know? Anyways, even though I knew everything leading up the silent war, and how it all began, something else puzzled me.” He paused. “Like my daughter and I being able to walk in the light.”

“You can walk in the light?” A puzzled look presented itself on Julian’s face as he asked the question.

“Vampires can’t walk in the light or else they’d burn to death, so I wondered how Eve and I could. I had a friend of mine, who knew what I was analyze a sample of my blood. What he found surprised me. For the first time in my life, I was literally floored.”

“What did he find?”

“Through a series of blood test, he found out that I carried a certain gene that could only be passed down through the bloodline. I passed this gene down to Eve unknowingly. When Dante bit Eve, the gene activated...it was dormant before.” He paused then continued. “The gene tried to repel Dante from turning Eve and it worked for a bit but not before she retained most of his traits.” Uriah lowered his head. “If I hadn’t been bitten, I would’ve lived a normal human life and so would have Eve. I did this to her, it’s my fault.”

Silence-

“Don’t blame yourself, you didn’t know.” Julian simply said.

“But if I had…”

“Then what?!” Julian snapped, “You wouldn’t have a daughter and I wouldn’t have her either, so don’t you ever forget that. You’re not the only one who loves her.” He whispered painfully as tears began rolling down his face. “I can’t lose her again, not again…”

“You misunderstand. I could never regret having my daughter, I regret causing her so much pain over the years.” Uriah sighed; “I can’t lose her either.” he whispered then turned to look out the window.

The two men drove in silence a little while longer, deep in their own thoughts before Uriah blinked his eyes then pointed in the direction of their destination. Looking over to where Uriah was pointing, Julian narrowed his eyes a bit until the saw a sign that read…Welcome to Boston.

As Dante began walking towards her, Eve somehow freed her left hand then drew back and punched him in the face, sending him backwards when he came too close. Holding his nose, Dante then watched as Eve freed her other arm before dropping down to the floor on her hands and knees.

“What’s the matter, can’t feel your legs?” Dante smirked knowingly as he wiped the blood from his nose.

“What did you do to me?!” Eve snarled viciously.

“While you were out, I injected you with some numbing medication. I’m surprised you have movement in your arms so soon. You’re been out of it for a while now. Besides, I couldn’t just take you when you were out cold, where would the fun be in that? ”

Walking towards her again, Dante kicked Eve in the ribs flipping her over on her back. He then straddled her waist and penned her arms above her head.

“Now, where was I…oh yeah…” Dante smirked then lowered his lips to Eve’s neck.

Eve began struggling as best she could, but it was no use. She still couldn’t feel her damn legs!

“Ooh, all this struggling is really turning me on more.” Dante sang as he slowly licked the vein protruding from her neck.

Eve’s fangs grew long and her eyes flashed light blue as she let out a thunderous growl.

“You sonofab*tch!” She snapped, growling louder then before.

Dante just chuckled as he slowly moved his left hand to the front of Eve’s black shirt and ripped it open, exposing her lacy black bra. A lustful groan escaped his throat as he trailed his lips from her neck to the valley between her breasts. The second he went to slice her bra open from the front with one of his long nails, one of Eve’s knees suddenly connected with his most valued possession between his legs, causing him to release her and yelp in pain.

Once she was freed, Eve stood up on shaking legs then proceeded to kick and stump the hell out of Dante! This continued for a few more minutes until she began to grow tired.

“Enough is enough, you sick bastard.” Eve snarled breathlessly.

Looking around in the small confined room for her guns, Eve finally spotted them on top of the only table in the room next to the only door in the room. Stumbling over to the table, the second she placed her hand on the handle of her Taurus Model PT100, she suddenly went flying across the room, hitting the opposite wall with a crackling thud.

“You b*tch!” Eve heard Dante call her as she struggled to stand back up.

With lightning speed, Dante had her penned to the wall with his forearm tightly pressed against her neck. Gasping for air, Eve grimaced in pain. Raising her left hand up to grip his forearm against her neck, Eve suddenly drew back with her right fist then sent Dante a critical blow to the midsection, which caused him to fly backward.

Wasting no time, Dante struggled to his feet while gripping his injured ribs. The movement caused him to wince in pain. He knew that with that punch she just delivered, Eve had just broken a few of his ribs.

Damn her…

Eve slumped against the wall trying to catch her breath as she rubbed her bruised neck. She then noticed that Dante was staring her right in the eyes. Raising one of her brows, she flashed him a toothy grin before pushing off the wall and charging him. When she was close enough, Eve jumped and slid between his parted legs, knocking the table holding her guns over. Dante never had a chance to turn around as one shot rang out, dropping him to his knees.

“Well now…this is a problem.” Dante grimaced as he gripped his badly wounded right shoulder.

Cautiously, Eve walked up behind him.

“For a hundred and thirty-six years, I’ve waited for this day. The day that I could finally kill the monster that did this to me.” Eve said as tears began running down her blood stained face.

“You should be thanking me instead. Because of me, you lived long enough to meet that damn mortal.” He sneered.

“You’re right, but I’m not. You and your damn brother caused a lot of people I care about pain and misery. So this isn’t just for me, it’s for them as well.” She simply stated.

He shrugged then sighed.

“At least I got to taste your luscious sweet lips again before I died.” Dante grinned lecherously one last time before a sickening crack could be heard, his lifeless body dropping to the floor as Eve snapped his neck from behind.

After driving around for a bit longer, Julian finally pulled up in front of the old rundown building Eve entered into a few hours earlier. Getting out of the car, Uriah waited for Julian to exit as well before walking up to the old beat down fence.

“I smell Eve’s scent, but it’s a few hours old.” Julian stated as he looked around.

“Keep your guard up, I smell blood.” Uriah said as they proceeded forward with caution.

Walking slowly, Julian and Uriah spotted a few men out cold on the ground ahead of them and a few more to the left. Upon further inspection, Uriah looked up when he heard moaning.

“Looks like Eve handled them well.” Uriah whispered.

“Yeah.” Julian smirked proudly.

Continuing on, they followed Eve’s scent to the back of the building before entering through the same air duct she did earlier. The second Julian was out, a growl escaped his lips as he quickly picked up Eve’s scent again, along with someone else too. Uriah heard Julian growling as soon as he exited the air duct, but before he had time to register what was going on, Julian was gone!

He ran as fast as he could through the building looking for Eve. Left, right, back and forth…he knew he needed to find her. Through his running, not one single vampire or mortal appeared before him, but he knew they were there. The scent of her blood engulfed his senses heavily, causing his eyes to turn light blue. Julian continued running until he came to a stop in front of darkened corridor that was heavily polluted with Eve’s blood.

Walking cautiously, he came upon a metal door. Sniffing quickly, the hairs on the back of his neck stood high. Gripping the handle as tight as he could with both hands, Julian twisted it with all the strength he had in him. When the handle was loose enough, he pushed against the door, grimacing in the process. Once the door was opened, he walked inside and found Eve slumped against the wall to the right side of him and the lifeless body of Dante lying in the middle of the floor.

“Eve!” Julian called out to her as he dropped down beside her.

Her shirt was ripped opened, and she had cuts and bruises all over. Placing his right hand on her cheek, a painful moan escaped her lips as he lifted her head up.

“Eve.” Julian called out to her again.

“Took you…long…enough…” she moaned out.

“Well you did have a big head start over us.” He smiled wryly. Thank God she was alive.

Julian suddenly caught movement out the corner of his eyes. He then stood up and took his fighting stance. He was just about to haul off and punch who ever the hell the person was, but stopped mid-stride when he noticed it was Uriah.

“Old man…” Julian sneered.

“Well when I exited the air duct you were gone. Don’t get mad at me because it’s not my fault I had to try and find you.” Uriah scoffed.

Suddenly, Uriah looked down then stumbled backward.

“Baby…” he whispered then watched with tear-filled eyes as Eve looked up to meet his face.

Sniffing carefully, Eve’s face twisted in confusion. The man with Julian smelt like her, but how?

“Why do you smell li…” she started then suddenly stopped, her eyes slowly opening more as she realized who it was standing in front of her. “F-father…” she whispered in disbelief.

How was this possible?

“Yeah it’s me baby girl.” Uriah whispered as Julian helped Eve stand. “I’ve missed you so much Eve.” He choked out as the tears ran down his face before pulling Eve into a warm hug.

“How nice and touching, father and daughter reuniting after a hundred and fifty-nine years apart. Too bad this reunion isn’t gonna last long!” Amon’s heavy voice boomed throughout the entire building. “YOU DIE NOW!!!”

In an instant, they were surrounded…
