Chapter IV

Four days had passed since the night Julian saved Eve from being shot and everything was moving along so fast. He had insisted that they head on over to his home and lay low for a while, but Eve flat out refused. She said that it wasn’t safe for them to be in Harmony anymore, that they had to leave soon, but he wasn’t having that and as much as Eve wanted to argue with him over their safety, she decided against it.

“We really shouldn’t be here.” Eve mumbled as she sat in front of the fireplace.

“I’m not use to just getting up and leaving a place like you do.” Julian countered as he sat in front of his computer surfing the net.

“I know they know we’re here, and it’s only matter of time before they come and get us.” Eve said dryly. “I refuse to be a sitting duck.” She snapped.

“Will you lighten up for a change? Geez…” Julian huffed then rolled his eyes. Why was she being so difficult? “Well, since we’re stuck together, why don’t we use this time to get to know each other better?” He suddenly blurted out.

Eve turned towards him and raised a brow.

“I rather not…” she said then turned back towards the fireplace and stared into the flames. “I don’t like bringing up the past…it’s too painful.” Eve whispered quietly.

“I’m sorry to hear that.” Julian said. After hearing Eve’s melancholy tone, he turned the computer off, then got up from behind his desk and walked over to where she sat.

“It’s just that, it’s been so long. Sometimes, I wonder what would’ve happened if things were different.”

“How so?”

“Believe it or not, you’re the first person that I’ve actually held a personal conversation with in a long time.” Eve said then watched as Julian smiled.

“Well you’re not the only one whose past is painful.” Julian said as he stared at the flames.

Complete silence filled the living room as the flames in the fireplace held both Julian and Eve’s stares. Their minds drifting back to different places, happier times in their past. Five minutes passed before Julian broke the silence.

“Well…I’m hungry, what about you?” he asked Eve as he stood up to stretch his back.

“Yeah.”

“Good, I’ll order a pizza.” Julian said as he began walking back over towards the desk to pick up his cell phone. “You want anything to drink while I’m up?” he asked.

“Sure.” Eve said never taking her eyes off the flames.

“Ok.”

Once Julian grabbed his cell phone, he walked out of the living room and headed for the kitchen. Eve then decided that now was the time to get up. She had been sitting down staring at the fire long enough. As she stood up, she was suddenly hit by a wave of vertigo. Grabbing onto the nearest thing close enough to steady herself, Eve closed her eyes then took a deep breath to try and regain her balance. Opening her eyes again, everything around her began to blur as she mumbled these four words, “Oh no, not again”, before passing out on the floor in front of the fireplace.

“Alright Eve, I ordered the pizza with extra pepperoni’s and…” Julian started but never got to finish as the sight before him startled him. “Eve!” He shouted as he ran over and dropped down next to her unconscious form on the ground by the fireplace.

Placing a hand on her forehead, he noticed immediately that she was burning up. Carefully, he picked her up and took her over to the couch a few feet away. Laying her down, he removed a few strands of hair from her face then stared down at her face to look for any movement whatsoever.

[Dreaming]

Eve…

Eve…

“Who are you?!” Eve shouted as she took in her surroundings.

Wherever she was, it was pitch black.

Turning to the left, nothing…

Turning to the right, nothing…

You can’t hide from me forever…

“How do you know me?! She shouted this time. “What do you want from me?!”

Suddenly a man walked up behind her and pulled her close. When she tried to struggle, a hand instantly locked around her neck, nearly cutting off her air supply.

“Do not try to fight me because it is useless.” The man whispered in her left ear as the hand around her neck loosened up. Eve shivered involuntarily as she felt fingers slowly descending down between her breasts before coming back up to rest on her shoulder.

“Why are you doing this?” She whispered in a frightened voice.

“Because you are mine!” He shouted then bit down on her neck.

“Aaaahhh!!!”

[Dream ends]

The moment she felt his fangs penetrate her neck, Eve’s eyes snapped open and she gasped for air. Suddenly, she turned to her right and brought her legs up close to her chest before wrapping her arms around them tightly as tears instantly ran down her face. Julian was taken off guard the minute she woke up and what got to him the most was the frightened look in her eyes.

“Eve…” Julian called out to her as he cautiously placed his hand on her left shoulder.

Eve immediately recoiled from his touch.

“Please don’t….” she cried out as a confused Julian looked on.

“Don’t what?”

“Please don’t hurt me.” She whimpered out this time as she wrapped her arms tighter around her legs.

Julian’s mouth dropped open.

“Eve…I would never hurt you.” Julian whispered sincerely as he reached out once more to place his hand on her shoulder.

This time she didn’t recoil from his touch as she slowly turned to face him. Using his left hand, Julian slowly reached up to her face and gently used his the pad of his thumb to wipe away her tears.

“I’m sorry about this.” Eve whispered.

“What happened?” Julian asked as he helped her sit up straight.

“I stood up and suddenly became dizzy.” Eve answered.

“Does this happen often?”

“This happens to me every once in a while.” Eve said then suddenly frowned. “Ugh…I hate it when it does.”

“Do you want to talk about it?” Julian asked as he stared into her eyes.

“I don’t know how to explain it.” Eve answered truthfully.

“Take your time.”

“I guess the only way for you to fully understand it, is for me to open up my past.” Eve closed her eyes then sighed…this was going to be hard. “I was born in Boston, in the late Spring of 1845. My father died when I was two and my mother remarried when I was five. I had a little sister named Liz. Like most families back then, the fathers were the breadwinners and the mothers tended to the children. We were a close family and I have many wonderful memories about them.” Eve smiled wryly.

Julian watched as a smile graced Eve’s lips. He always knew that up under all of that tough exterior was a very kind and gentle person…too bad Eve didn’t see it for herself.

“I was twenty-five when everything changed. I remember I was in my room asleep when I suddenly felt a shiver run down my back. The minute I opened my eyes, I found this man hovering over me. It was dark, and I really didn’t see his face clearly.” Eve frowned. “When I went to scream, he placed his hand over my mouth and told me to be quiet. He then picked me up and took me out of my home and into the woods. We were deep in the woods when he roughly threw me down and straddled my waist. I thought he was going to rape me.” She whispered.

Julian placed his right hand on her left shoulder.

“I began to fight him off of me the best way I could. I don’t how or when it happened, but I felt this sharp pain shoot through my neck all the way down to my toes and I couldn’t move. He then told me that he was going to come for me in three days and left. Somehow, I managed to get home and when I opened the front door, I found my mother and my stepfather on the floor in a pool of their own blood…and I knew they were dead. I then went looking for Liz and found her in her bed dead as well.” More tears began falling down Eve’s face. “My family was dead and I was all alone. Three days went by so fast, and I was terribly sick. I couldn’t keep any food down, I was burning up and then suddenly I had fangs. Right then and there, I knew what I was, so I ran away from the place of my birth and never looked back.”

“How did you know you were a vampire right away? Maybe the man was a wolf.” Julian said.

“I thought he was too, but when the first full moon came, nothing happened. Then the second and third one passed and still nothing.” Eve said then looked up. “I struggled to live with these changes happening to me everyday for the first ten years of my new life and as time passed, I learned a few things.”

*DING DONG*

Julian looked over his right shoulder at the front door.

“The pizza is here.” He said.

“Great.” Eve said then stood up. “I’m going to go straighten up in the bathroom.” She replied then walked out of the living.

Julian stood up then called out “I’ll be right there...” as he walked over to the door. As soon as he placed his left hand on the doorknob, he went sailing through midair across the living room as the door was suddenly blown off the hinges. He landed a few feet away from the couch as he slowly tried to sit up. Groaning, he shook his head a little before looking towards what use to be his front door.

“What the he… ACK…” Julian tried to say but was cut off as a man lifted him up off of the ground by his neck.

Julian eyes nearly bugged out as the man began sniffing him. ‘What in the world?!’

“Where is she?!” The man shouted in a deep English accent. “And don’t lie to me because her scent is all over you.”

“She’s…not…here….” Julian struggled to say as the man’s hand around his neck became tighter. His vision began to blur and he could barely breath. ‘I guess Eve knew what she was talking about.’

Suddenly out of nowhere, the man that came in after the guy holding Julian by the neck went flying across the room landing into the fireplace. The man removed his hand from around Julian’s neck and let him drop to the floor hard as he snapped his head in the direction his man came from.

“I demand to know who are you?” Eve sneered as she emerged from the kitchen.

“My name is Octavius Mitchum.”

Eve sniffed the air then suddenly her face twisted in disgust. “Those hypocrites! They hunt me down like some animal because of what I am, yet send you, a vampire after me!” she snapped bearing her fangs.

Octavius began to laugh. “We don’t hunt you because of what you are, we hunt you because of who sired you.” He said in a serious tone.

“What are you talking about?” Eve asked, confusion written all over her face. “I don’t even know who did this to me...” She said truthfully.

“You lie wench! Now tell me where he is!” Octavius shouted bearing his fangs.

“I just told you I don’t know who the hell he is! And I sure as hell don’t know where he is because if I did, I’d kill him myself for making me this way!” Eve countered.

“Liar!” Eve’s eyes grew huge as she watched Octavius jump at her. She easily dodged his attack as she jumped to the right. She then noticed Julian on the ground struggling to stand and immediately ran to him.

“Eve…” Julian said hoarsely. “You…were right.” He choked out.

“We don’t have time for this, let’s go.” Eve said. As she went to place Julian’s arm around her neck to help him stand, she was suddenly pulled away from him and slammed hard into wall behind her.

“Don’t you ever turn your back on me wench!” Octavius spat. “Where is your mate? Answer me!” He shouted viciously as he stood over her crumbled form.

Eve groaned in pain as blood trickled from the side of her mouth and clinched her eyes shut. Opening them slowly, she looked down at her right side and gasped in horror. She had a piece of wood sticking out from her side and blood was everywhere. Octavius then lifted her up by her neck and watched as she placed both of her hands around his left forearm.

“Are you done lying to me yet wench?!” He sneered as he squeezed her neck tighter.

Eve was barely conscious as she grimaced in pain. Her eyes were beginning to close when she saw Julian standing behind Octavius with some kind of weapon in his hands. She then watched as Julian hauled off and struck Octavius from behind. Simultaneously, Octavius let her go as she dropped down to her knees; then slumped over against the wall. Lifting her head up as best she could, she noticed Octavius’s body on the floor to the left and his head to the right before blacking out.

Julian ran over to Eve and checked to see if she had a pulse. He breathed a sigh of relief when he found it. He then turned around to look at the dead body of Octavius. He blinked his eyes slowly…he had killed somebody and not just anybody but a vampire. How was he going to explain that to the Sheriff? Eve had been right when she said that they shouldn’t have come here, but he didn’t listen and now she was seriously injured.

He lifted her up in his arms slowly, earning a groan of pain from Eve, and carried her out to his car on the side of his house. Once he was sure that she was in the backseat safely, he ran over to the driver’s side and hopped in. He had to get her somewhere safely as he started the engine up. Pulling out of the driveway, he knew the perfect place to take her and at least by them some more time…the Crane cabin.
