Back in Time, Chapter 4
by ejcrane
Throwing the phone to the side, Julian sat in front of Eve and rested his
hands on her knees.
“I called the hospital, Eve, and told them that we were stuck in the elevator,
and that you were in labor,” he tried to ease the situation by smiling,
“They shouldn’t take long, Eve…just stay put,” he said and then paused,
“‘Just stay put’? Where the hell is she going to go?” he said to himself
as he rolled his eyes and shook his head.
“Julian, SHUT UP and stop talking to yourself! THE BABY’S COMING…AHHHHH!”
she began screaming.
“Eve, what do I do?” he panicked
Thirty minutes later, Julian smiled and handed a tiny little infant to
his mother…Eve.
“He’s beautiful, Eve,” he laughed and smiled.
“Ohh, Julian! He’s wonderful, he’s…”
“IT’LL JUST BE ANOTHER FIVE MINUTES, MR. CRANE!” the maintenance man yelled
from the other side of the elevator doors.
Julian mumbled under his breath. They’d been saying that for the past forty
minutes!
“Thank you, Julian…thank you so much! I don’t know what I’d do if I would’ve
been stuck in here by myself…”
“Shhh, Eve, just rest, okay?” he said and sat beside her and pulled her
into his arms, “I’m glad I was here; I’d do anything for you, Eve…” his words
trailed off as he leaned forward and watched Eve’s eyes close as his lips
met hers, “…anything.” He whispered between kisses.
And just as they were about to deepen the kiss, the elevator jerked and
the lights were restored, which made them part.
The doors opened and a glaring Tc leaped in and jumped on Julian!
“GET AWAY FROM MY WIFE, YOU BASTARD!”
At the sound of a baby’s high pitched cry, Tc stopped what he was doing
and looked to his wife, who was carrying a newborn infant wrapped in Julian’s
suit jacket.
“Eve,” Tc said in amazement, “Is this our baby?” he grinned as he rushed
to her side.
She smiled and nodded as her husband gently touched the boy’s face with
his finger.
“What is it, Eve?”
“A boy, a baby boy…”
“A boy?!” he asked excitedly, “Oh, Eve, I love you sweetheart,” he said
and then kissed her cheek.
Julian turned the other way at the sight. He watched as they came in with
a stretcher and placed Eve on it. As they rolled her out of the elevator,
Eve’s eyes never left her baby’s face or TC’s, but when she glanced back
towards the opened doors she saw Julian. His eyes never left hers; never
left hers as he gave her a friendly smile; never left hers as his hand reached
out in front of him and pushed on the button of the elevator. The doors closed,
and that was the last time Eve had seen Julian that year.
“Oh, Miss!” Julian yelled out as he chased down a lady with a stroller
at the hospital, “You dropped this…” he said out of breath as he caught
up to her.
She turned around and smiled. It was Eve. Eve and little Nicky, their son,
only neither one knew that.
“Eve,” Julian exhaled, “It’s been so long…” he smiled at her and then looked
to the little one year old who was asleep, “He looks good,” Julian’s eyes
then traveled up, “As do you,” he whispered and held out the stuffed animal
to Eve.
“Thanks,” she replied.
The two stayed there, staring at each other until Dr. Brooks came and informed
Eve that a patient of hers, that he had taken, was asking for her, personally.
“Allen, I can’t see her…I have Nicky with me…”
“I’ll stay with him,” Julian volunteered, “Unless,” he shrugged, “You don’t
feel comfortable with that?”
“No…no, uh, I, that’s fine,” she smiled, “Are you sure?”
He nodded.
“Okay, I won’t be but ten minutes,” she patted Julian’s hand and left with
Dr. Brooks.
Nicky had woken up and was wailing as Julian sat in Eve’s office on the
couch, the couch where they created this awesome little boy. Julian pulled
the stroller close to him and looked in.
“Quite the temper, huh, young fellow? Just like your father’s, hmm?” he
rolled his eyes and laughed, “Well, let’s see if I remember this. I hardly
took part in raising my children with Ivy, but I believe this is the way to
do it,” he said as he picked up Nicky and pulled him to his chest and held
him close as he rocked slowly, “Huh, is that better? No?”
Nicky kept crying and crying. Everything Julian was doing wasn’t good enough.
“There she was just a walking down the street, singing do wah diddy diddy
dum diddy do,” Julian paused when Nicky quieted down, “Hey, you like this
song, huh?” he laughed.
After not hearing the song anymore, Nicky started up again…
“Snapping her fingers and shuffling her feet, singing do wah diddy diddy
dum diddy do…She looked good(looked good); She looked fine(looked fine);
She looked good, she looked fine, and I nearly lost my mind…”
Julian smiled down into Nick’s little face as his eyes closed and his breathing
became even again, which meant that he fell back asleep.
“See, I know what I’m doing…a little,” Julian whispered and chuckled to
himself.
Ten minutes later, Eve walked into her office and found Julian carrying
Nicky, while looking at the photos on her desk.
“You think this could’ve been us?” he held up a picture of her with Tc,
their girls, and little Nick.
“Julian,” she shook her head as her smile faded, “That was in the past…we
can’t go back; we just can’t…” she walked up to him and gently took Nicolas
out of his arms.
“He was good…” Julian began before Eve could open her mouth.
“How did you know I was going to ask that?” she said amazed.
“Because,” he shrugged, “I know you…so well,” his eyes traveled down her
body…
And that’s when Julian just couldn’t take it! He walked up to Eve, pulled
a sleeping Nicky out of her arms and laid him down in his stroller, and
then turned back to Eve and pulled her into his arms.
“It’s been too long, Eve, too too long,” his lips hovered over hers and
then finally met them, “I don’t want to go another day without knowing how
it feels to have you close to me; how it feels to love you…” his lips traveled
to her neck.
Just as Eve was beginning to lose herself, Nicky beginning to cry again,
causing Eve to snap back to reality.
“No, Julian! No!” she stepped away from him and grabbed the handle to the
stroller and pushed it out of her office, leaving Julian there, standing…just
as he had been that day they wheeled her out of the elevator…away from him.
He looked down, but an idea popped into his head…
Tc’s out of town with the tennis team…Eve and Nicky will be all alone.
No, no, I can’t have that… He grinned to himself.
Eve had just got home and put Nick in his crib when the bell rang. She
rushed down the stairs and opened up the door, only to be shoved back into
her home by Julian.
“I don’t think we were through, Eve,” he chuckled as he pulled her into
a hot kiss, “Not quite,” he held her with one arm as his other slammed the
front door shut.
Julian then directed her to the stairs and the two fell back upon them.
He unbuttoned his pants…
“I need you one last time, Eve…please,” he cried, “Tomorrow, Rebecca and
I will be husband and wife…”
“WHAT?!”
“It’s true, Eve,” he kissed her forehead, “I’m giving you up for good;
I just need tonight. I need to remember how it feels for us to be together…”
“No, you can’t, Julian…I have to tell you something; I have to tell you
something!” she cried underneath him.
“GET THE FUCK OFF OF HER!”
Both, Julian and Eve’s eyes widened when they heard Whitney behind them,
but Julian had a more frightened look upon his face!
Was that cold metal he felt against the back of his head?! Was Whitney
pointing a gun at his head?!
