A Brand New Twist - Chapter 7 (Evian)

Julian held Eve in his arms for hours while she cried and cried and then cried some more. His heart broke for her. Even now, as she slept, she continued to sob. Anger grew in him like an out of control fire. TC didn’t complete a physical attack on her body, but his act did accomplish the decimation of her spirit, and for that he would pay. That bastard would pay big. Julian checked his watch. He should have heard something by now.
The sound of the phone ringing interrupted his vengeful thoughts. He stared at the phone then back at Eve. Though a fitful sleep, she was resting, and he didn’t want her more disturbed. He walked around the bed to the nightstand and ended the shrilling ring.

“Hello.”

A gasp came from the other line. “Who is this? What are you doing in my house?” the woman asked.

“Dr. Carver, relax. This is Julian Crane.”

“Julian Crane?” Lexie didn’t seem surprised by his admission. “Where is Eve?”

“Resting. She’s had a tough few hours. Did she talk to you?” Julian quesioned.

“A little. She told me about you and that TC was very angry right now and she couldn’t be around him.”

From Eve’s current state, Julian doubted she could ever be around TC again. She wouldn’t have to worry. Very soon, that problem would no longer be a problem.

“I know there’s more, but she wouldn’t tell me what?” She paused. “Do I need to come over there.”

“No,” he answered. “As a matter of fact, I plan to take Eve back to Harmony with me later today. I do thank you for being such a wonderful friend to her, but I’ll see to her needs now.”

“Is that such a good idea?”

“It’s the best idea, especially now that she’s preg--” Julian closed his eyes, sighing. Eve was pregnant, and sooner or later they had to discuss what that meant. “I love Eve. She’ll never want for anything.”

“Mr. Crane,” she began.

“Julian.”

“Very well. Julian, I don’t doubt your love for Eve, or the fact that you can give her anything in this world she wanted, but what she needs now more than anything else is time. I don’t know what’s going on with you, Eve, and TC, but I do know Eve needs to work this out for herself.”

Julian expelled a quick breath. Lexie’s words left a bitter taste in his mouth. “You’re right, you don’t know what’s going on,” he said louder than intended. Eve stirred. Once she was still, he continued with a softer tone. “With all due respect, Doctor, I think I know what Eve needs more than you. Again, I thank you for all you’ve done for her, but I will be taking her home today. Goodbye.” Julian hung up the phone and returned to Eve’s side, not all interested in what more her well-meaning friend had to say.

He brushed his hand along Eve’s hair. Her shoulders shook intermittently from the continual sobs. “It will be okay, my darling,” he assured. “I’m going to make everything okay for you.”

The phone in his pocket vibrated. He eased off the bed and answered. “Yes?” he said, turning from Eve’s sleeping form.

“Mr. Crane, we have Mr. Russell.”

The thrill of revenge warmed his heart. “Good. You have your orders, commence.”

“Uh, Mr. Crane, look, we do things, but this is--”

Julian interrupted the man with a grunt. “I don’t want to hear ‘buts’. I paid you a lot of money to do this and I expect you to follow through, explicitly,” he demanded. “If TC Russell survives this day, he will have learned a lesson he’ll never forget. If he doesn’t, so be it. You just do what I said!”

He ended the call and shoved the phone back in his pocket.

“Julian!”

From the tone of Eve’s voice, he knew she heard the conversation. He groaned softly then turned around.

Panic and tears filled her puffy eyes. “What are you doing, Julian? Oh, God! What in the world are you doing?”
