Chapter Four

Pilar studied her son and daughter nervously as they played with their own children. Miguel was busy making faces at Jamie while Theresa tried to get Ethan Martin to say a few new words. This wasn’t the life she had planned for her children. They were young and single and had children with people they didn’t love.

“Miguel is Charity coming over tonight?” Pilar asked walking into the living room. “I noticed you’re all dressed up.”

“No mama Charity has a huge test to study for, but I asked Kay to come over and eat.” He smiled. “I thought it would be nice for her to get a real home cooked meal.”

“Kay?” Pilar frowned. “How does Charity feel about that?”

Miguel shrugged his shoulders, “She was fine with it, you know Charity she trusts me.”

“Mama Ethan might be coming over.” Theresa spoke up her eyes beaming, “He said he would do his best to stop by.”

Pilar forced a smile, “Theresa did you invite Ethan over?” She asked.

“You mean did she beg?” Miguel smirked.

“Mama, don’t be silly I merely suggested that if he wasn’t doing anything tonight he could stop by.” Theresa shrugged.

“Theresa you’re chasing that man!” Pilar sighed. “When are you going to stop?”

“Mama I love him.” Theresa spoke sitting her son down. “You know that.”

“I know a lot of things Theresa.” Pilar said taking Jaime from his father’s arms. “I know that my children are not as happy as they should be. Luis and Antonio, I worry about them so. Luis told me that tonight he was telling Antonio the truth. I blame myself for not letting them tell him sooner. Now though, Luis has a beautiful little boy and he refuses to wait.”

“Mama that baby is a month old, Luis should have told Antonio as soon as he was born.” Theresa frowned. “But don’t worry about us Mama, we are all going to be fine.”

“Mama I’m very happy.” Miguel spoke up.

“Which is why Kay is coming over tonight instead of Charity? Oh Miguel I hope you’re not playing with those two girls.”

“Mama I would never do that.” Miguel frowned. “I’m not like that.”

“Of course not Miguel.” Pilar spoke quickly. “Please forgive me, your mama has just had a long day.”

“Mama are you feeling okay?” Theresa questioned standing up. “You look
flushed.”

“Yes I’m fine. I just worry about my children.” Pilar answered back walking over and sitting down beside Miguel. Looking down at Jamie she touched his face as he grabbed at her finger.

“Mama don’t worry about us.” Theresa smiled. “We’ll be fine.” Looking at her watch she frowned. “I wonder why Ethan hasn’t called.”

“Theresa why must you concern yourself with Ethan? You’re a beautiful young woman, you shouldn’t be thinking about only Ethan.”

“Ethan is the only man I love.” Theresa sighed. “I think I’ll go call and see if he’s coming over.” She frowned. “Could you watch Little Ethan while I use the phone?”

“Of course.” Pilar nodded with a frown.

“I should call and see if Kay is coming over soon. I need to change Jamie before she gets here. I think I’ll put him in those jeans Sheridan bought for him, Kay loves them.” Miguel spoke taking his son from Pilar.

“Miguel, it’s wonderful that you’re staying friends with Kay but I do hope Charity isn’t bothered by it.”

“I asked Charity to come over for dinner and she couldn’t. Kay was going to be at her apartment eating alone and I just hated the thought of that.” Miguel shrugged. “It’s really no big deal.”

“And Kay understands that you two are just friends?” Pilar asked. “She isn’t getting any ideas in her head?”

“No.” Miguel spoke standing up. “Mama Kay has changed, she isn’t after me now. All she wants is the best for our son. “I thought you’d be happy that I had worked things out with Kay. If you don’t want her to come over tonight just tell me, and I’ll take her out instead.”

“I have no problem with Kay coming over Miguel, I just don’t want you to get your feelings mixed up when it comes to those two girls.”

“My feelings are not mixed up.” Miguel sighed. “Now I really need to take Jamie and change his clothes. Relax Mama, everything is going fine right now.” Miguel smiled.

Pilar watched as her son left the room talking to his baby. With a frown she closed her eyes. “They just don’t understand.” She sighed. “They just don’t realize that one mistake can ruin your life forever.”

Noah Bennett smiled over at the woman by his side. Her wavy blonde fell just past her shoulders, bouncing as she moved to look over at him. “Are you sure you want to move to Harmony?” He questioned watching as she stared out the car window.

“It’s your home ain’t it?” She questioned her dark blue eyes dancing. “Besides it’ll be interesting.”

Noah smiled at her soft southern drawl. When she was mad it was much more noticeable but at the moment it was simply adorable to him. “I can’t wait for you to meet my sisters.” He spoke resting his hand over hers. She was the first girl to ever catch his heart completely.

“Are you scared?” She asked lifting an eyebrow. “You did say you used to be a mama’s boy.”

“Not a mama’s boy.” He blushed. “Just very close to my mother.”

“Mama’s boy.” She laughed under her breath. “Noah there ain’t nothing wrong with it. I just don’t want your mother to freak out when you tell her.”

Noah smirked, “Are you worried she won’t like you?”

“Me worried? Nah. I just wanta see you explain how you up and married a girl from the back woods of Tennessee out in Boston.” Brenna Bennett smirked. “Should be interesting.”

“Baby explaining how I’m married at all is going to be a challenge. Mother will think you’re pregnant, dad will say I’m rebelling and if I know Kay she’ll say I’m trying to still her thunder.”

“Noah we dated for six months at any time you could’ve told them that we were together. I still don’t see why you kept it secret, I know you say your family is different but really how bad can it be?” Brenna asked staring out at the house in front of her.

“Bren, you haven’t met my family. They’re just a real strange bunch.” He frowned. “One second I have two sisters, the next two sisters and two brothers, then I’m back down to two sisters and one brother. My parents have just now decided to stay together and my teenage sister is living by herself with the baby she had by her cousin’s boyfriend. Oh and did I forget to add that my youngest sister is dating the guy my other sister pretended to date for a while? Why would I want you going in that house? Tell me why?” Noah spoke almost all in one breath.

“Because as quacky as you seem to think they are, they are your family. Heck you met my bunch. I have seven very loud brothers and one very annoying sister.” She laughed. “Your family helps make you who you are Noah, and as bad as you hate to hear it, you’ve gotta face them again.”

A laugh took over Noah as he took his wife by the hand, “Kay’s going to love you.” He spoke looking at the house in front of them. “If you’re ready.” He sighed. “Let’s get this over with.”

“Oh my gosh, I forgot how good your mother’s cooking was.” Kay laughed as she walked outside with Miguel. The night wind hit her as her hair fell in her face.

“Better than those microwave meals you’ve been eating?” Miguel asked as they took
a seat in the old swing that hung beneath the huge oak tree.

“It was really sweet of you to ask me over here tonight Miggs. You’ve ate my mom’s cooking so you know it’s not something a person could live on, and well all I know is how to burn food.” Kay laughed.

“You know I can’t believe Jamie went down for his nap so easy tonight.”

“Yeah I know he usually screams his head off first.” Kay grinned. “He gets that from you ya know. I remember when we were younger; you would call me at all hours. You never went to sleep.”

“I just liked to bug you.” Miguel chuckled. “I knew how mad you got if I woke you up.”

Kay rolled her eyes, “You were such a brat!”

“I was not a brat.” Miguel smirked. “I just loved to annoy you.”

“Why was that?” Kay questioned. “Why did you always pick on me Miggs? I always wondered.”

“You didn’t know?” Miguel asked moving back, “Kay how could you not have known.”

“Am I missing something here?” Kay questioned.

“I had a huge crush on you back then Kay. That was how I dealt with it, by bugging you. I was a kid, it was fun.” Miguel laughed running his hand through his hair.

“You had a crush on me?” Kay questioned with a slight gasp. In that moment she wasn’t sure what to say to him. Miguel, the person she had chased for years had once had a crush on her?

“Why do you think I wanted to be your first kiss or for you to be mine for that matter? Because you were the girl I liked then.”

“Wait a second, you told me you kissed Candace Myers three weeks before you kissed me.” Kay spoke crossing her arms. Her eyes danced as she watched Miguel squirm.

“I was twelve years old, so I lied.” Miguel shrugged. “I didn’t think you’d want me to be your first kiss if you knew I had no idea what I was doing.”

Kay let out a huge sigh, “I can’t believe you lied about that.”

“I can’t believe you told Charity it wasn’t a good kiss.” He spoke with a fake pout. “That’s not what you told me after I kissed you.”

“Well I might have lied to Charity.” She spoke with a grin. “But really what was I suppose to say?”

“So is all forgiven?” Miguel asked.

“Water under the bridge.” Kay nodded. “Speaking of Charity how is she? I really feel bad that she’s freaking out over our past.”

“I feel bad that she’s seeing my past.” Miguel frowned. “Kay we’ve had a very interesting past.”

“One you don’t want Charity to see?” Kay questioned. “Miguel I don’t want her to get upset, but I need to know are you ashamed of our past together?”

“No!” Resting his hand on Kay’s shoulder he fixed his hazel eyes on her. “I am not ashamed of being your friend Kay, nor am I ashamed of having a son with you. When I was young and I needed someone you were my rock. I just don’t want Charity to get hurt, she’s so fragile.”

The wind hit Kay and she shivered. “I should get back in, it’s getting cool out here.”

Without thinking Miguel wrapped his arm around Kay, “Remember when we would come out here years ago? You loved this swing.”

“I can’t believe it’s still here.” She nodded. “It was always so peaceful out here.”

“Peaceful? I’d be pushing the swing and you’d be screaming, I hardly call that peaceful.” Miguel laughed gently.

“You pushed it too hard.” Kay giggled. Rubbing her hands together she smirked, “My hands are like ice.” She spoke, “Feel.” Touching them to Miguel’s face he jerked back.

“Oh that was wrong!” Miguel laughed as he grabbed her hands and pulled her toward him watching as she laughed loudly. “You’ll pay for that one.” Kay tried to get out of Miguel’s hold but was laughing too hard. Before they could stop themselves they fell out of the swing. Kay landed with a thud in layers of leaves, with Miguel on top of her.

Still holding Kay’s hands his laughing stopped as his hazel eyes caught the sparkle in the pools that were Kay’s eyes. Moving his hands her pulled Kay toward him his lips trapping her lips in a kiss neither expected. There was no thinking as he held her to him he was simply feeling. The kiss grew stronger as she gently fell back in the leaves. It was like something had been lit and he didn’t want to let Kay go. Finally she jerked away from him catching her breath as she looked at him with confused eyes. “Miguel?” She whispered her voice innocent.

Miguel couldn’t find words as he stared down at her. He had never felt anything like that in his life. He had heard about kisses that left a person breathless but never had he experienced it. “I, I Kay, I don’t know.” He tried but it didn’t work. The words refused to come out of his mouth.

“Will you go check on Jamie?” She managed gently pushing him off her. “Please?”

Miguel slowly stood to his feet and waited for Kay to stand as well. Seeing the look on her face he shoved his hands in his pockets. “We need to talk.” He spoke.

“No.” She spoke shaking her head. “It was a mistake.” She whispered. “It has to be a mistake.”

“But Kay.” His voice trailed as he saw her drop her head. “I’ll check on Jamie.” He finally spoke. “And then we’ll talk.”

“Nothing to say.” She whispered. “Just go now.”

She watched as Miguel slowly walked in the house and sighed. “I won’t do this to Charity again. I won’t hurt her, I can’t do that Miguel.” She spoke to herself.

“Excuse me, is Theresa at home?” A male voice spoke taking her out of her thoughts. Whirling around she saw a man she only knew as her brother’s half-brother.

“Yeah she’s inside.” Kay answered.

“You’re Kay Bennett.” He spoke with a sudden smirk. “I’m Fox Crane, it’s good to finally meet you Miss Bennett, I’ve already heard so much about you.”

Miguel walked in the house to see Luis standing in the kitchen. “My bed room now.” He spoke to his brother.

“Right now?” Luis questioned looking stunned. “I just came by for a minute.”

“Man I’m begging now, please I need to talk to you.”

Luis nodded his head, “Fine little brother, but make it fast, Sheridan and I are telling Antonio the truth tonight. At least she says we are.” He sighed.

Luis followed Miguel in to his bedroom and watched as the younger man shut the door. Walking over to Jamie’s crib he checked his son and then looked up at Luis. “I have totally messed up now.” He frowned raking a nervous hand through his hair. “Oh man have I messed up.”

“Miguel what did you do?” Luis asked watching as his brother paced in the room.

“I kissed her Luis, I don’t know what made me do it but I kissed her.”

“Something tells me we’re not talking about Charity.” Luis frowned sitting down on the bed. “Calm down and tell me what’s going on.”

Turning to face his brother Miguel let out a groan, “I was out in the backyard with Kay, and we were just goofing off. We were in the swing and then we fell out and I kissed her.”

“Miguel!” Luis spoke shaking his head.

“But it wasn’t just a kiss. It was the kiss.” He spoke with a frown. “I have never kissed anyone and felt like that. It left me speechless Luis, I couldn’t breathe , I couldn’t think, how did I do this to myself.” He rattled.

“Miguel, do you have feelings for Kay?” Luis questioned.

“I’m not suppose to.” He frowned. “But I felt something a few minutes ago that I’ve never felt in my life. There was passion in that kiss Luis, and if she hadn’t jerked away, oh man if she hadn’t pushed me away I don’t know
what we might’ve done.”

“I don’t need you to go there.” Luis frowned. “So you felt something strong? Stronger than what you feel when you kiss Charity?”

Miguel shook his head, "I was almost dizzy Luis. Does that make sense? I felt something I didn't know I could feel."

Luis let out a huge sigh, “Little brother, looks like you’ve got some thinking to do. What did Kay say?”

“She told me to come check on Jamie. She said it was a mistake.” Miguel frowned. “And I know she’s right because I do love Charity. I want to marry her, but I don’t understand it. She’s everything I ever wanted so why don’t I feel like that when I kiss her?”

“I can’t answer that for you Miguel. When I kiss Sheridan I can hear the fireworks going off.” Luis chuckled. “But everyone is different.”

“Yeah I guess.” Miguel shrugged. “Kay’s going to think I’m leading her on and I’m not Luis, I’m not. We were just having fun like we used to. Just talking about old times and I don’t know what happened. I just looked down at her, and something clicked. I’ve kissed her before Luis, but it’s never been like that. I’ve never kissed anyone before and felt like that. With Charity everything is so sweet and gentle you know? She’s so delicate and good and I love that about her, I do.” Miguel spoke his voice nervous as he turned to look at Luis. “I can live with sweet and gentle right? I mean just because Charity doesn’t leave me speechless doesn’t mean she’s not my soul mate?” He questioned.

“I don’t know Miguel.” Luis shrugged. “The connection I have with Sheridan is so strong. I’ve never kissed her and not saw stars. What we have or will have once we tell Antonio the truth is sweet but it’s also full of passions. I don’t know if I could be with someone with that whoa feeling. There’s nothing like it.” Luis smirked.

“Tell me about it.” Miguel muttered.

“You need to talk to Charity. Bro you have to figure things out once and for all. You can’t keep these two girls confused. You can only have one of them, and you need to decide which on of them it is.”

“I’m engaged to Charity, the choice is simple. It was just a kiss, I mean just one kiss.”

Luis smiled, “If that kiss was just a kiss, the answer should be easy Miguel. If it wasn’t, then you need to sort out your feelings.”

“Yeah, thanks Luis.” Miguel grumbled.

“Didn’t help you much did I?” Luis asked standing. “Sorry Miguel, I’m here if you need to talk though.”

Miguel nodded his head and walked back over to Jamie’s crib. “Do you think I feel so connected to Kay because of Jamie?” He questioned.

“Could be.” Luis shrugged. “I can’t answer that one for you.”

“Good luck with Antonio Luis.” Miguel spoke looking up. “I hope it all finally works out.”

“Yeah so do I.”

-----------------------------------------------------------------
Chad Harris stood in the middle of the department store staring at bottles of perfume. He was going to surprise Whitney with a romantic night, and thought buying her a bottle of her favorite perfume would be a nice touch. With a sigh he picked one of the bottles up and frowned. “This has got to be it.” He spoke with a shrug.

“Chad? Chad Harris?” A female voice spoke from behind him.

Turning he saw Gwen holding her daughter a smile on her face, “What are you doing buying perfume?” She questioned.

“Gwen, hi.” He said with a smile. “I decided to surprise Whit. She was complaining about being out of her favorite perfume other day so I thought why not do something nice for her.”

“That’s a lovely gesture.” Gwen nodded. “I’m sure she’ll be thrilled.”

Looking at the test bottle Chad smiled, “Hey would you let me test this stuff on you?” He asked with a grin. “I’m not sure if I’ve got the right one and I don’t wanta waste my money on something Whit doesn’t like.”

“Sure why not, I smell like baby powder most of the time now anyway.” Gwen laughed kissing Hanna on the forehead.

Chad sprayed the perfume and smiled as he took in the scent. “Yeah that’s the one.” He smiled.

Gwen’s eyes became wide, “Wait, that’s what Whitney uses?” She questioned. The scent was familiar to her, very familiar. “Are you sure?”

“Yeah, I know what my girl wears Gwen.” Chad laughed. “I mean between you and me it’s a little strong, but hey if she likes it.”

“Yeah.” Gwen nodded.

“Gwen you ok?” Chad asked with a frown.

“Um yeah sure.” She nodded stepping back. “So things with you and Whitney are good?”

“Never been better.” Chad spoke with his usual smile.

“Do you see Ethan often?” She asked slowly.

Chad dropped his head, “Actually no, haven’t saw him around a lot lately. He was at the Book Café a couple days ago, I called out to him but he just kept going, guess he didn’t hear me.”

“I need to be going Chad.” Gwen frowned. “I’ll see you later though.” Turning she quickly walked away clutching her daughter to her.
“No, they wouldn’t.” She whispered to herself. “Whitney wouldn’t do that, would she?” With a sigh Gwen looked down at her daugthter, "Looks like we're going to pay Miss Russell a little visit"
