Collision Course, Chapter 67

Julian was having his morning coffee in the Library when Ivy came in.

” Julian.”

” Ivy.”

” You’ve heard about Whitney Russell and Rebecca?”

” Yes, I have.”

” What do you think about it?”

” Do I have to ‘ think’ anything about it? It is what it is. Rebecca has a child with TC – one of the most bizarre sentences I’ve ever uttered.”

Ivy laughed. “ I know that this is a serious situation, but you’re right – it’s bizarre. I went to talk to Rebecca, and even after that, it’s STILL bizarre. Julian, she asked me to run interference with Gwen.”

“ Gwen cut her off?”

Ivy nodded. “ Robbie too.”

“ I feel bad for Rebecca. That must be torture. I know I’m not the best parent, but if any of our children cut me out of their lives, I’d ache.”

Ivy shuddered, thinking about Ethan, but Julian didn’t notice.

“ Ivy, did you talk to Gwen?”

” She was in her room. Ethan took the morning off to spend time with her.”

” Good. She needs her husband’s support right now. “

“ They…they ARE happy, right Julian?”

” I believe so. They’re a good fit, Ivy. Gwen is the best wife for him. And, she loves him.”

” Yes. She loves him.”

Julian got up and  sat next to Ivy on the couch.

” Ivy, there’s something that I want to discuss with you.”

” Julian, you look so serious.”

” It is serious. We….we’ve been getting along so well. This is about the warmest our marriage has ever been. I actually feel like we’re in a real marriage.”

” Julian, we ARE in a real marriage.”

” Ivy, you know what I mean.”

” I do. I do. Julian, I told you. No more warfare. No more wars. We’ve had a lot of bad years, and I don’t want any more.”

” Ok, then. Then I guess it’s time for me to tell the truth.”

” The truth?”

” I have a son with Eve.”

” Julian, I know that.”

” That son is Chad Harris.”

“ Oh. I didn’t know that.”

Gwen sat at the windowseat in her room with Ethan. He brought her some tea.

” Thanks for spending the day with me.”

” My pleasure. You didn’t sleep well.”

” I have a lot on my mind.”

” I know that.”

“ How could you forgive Ivy?”

” She’s my mother. I’m angry with her still. I haven’t forgotten what she did. And, I don’t even know if I’ve forgiven her. But, she’s my mother, and I’m working on it. Gwen, nobody is asking you to forgive Rebecca today. Or tomorrow. I admit, having a kid and giving it away and not telling anyone is huge. I’m not saying you’re a bad person. You’re not. You’re wonderful. You have standards. I appreciate that. It’s one of the things I love most about you.”

The phone rang. Ethan answered it. “ It’s for you.”

” Gwen Crane…yes….yes…I understand. Thank you.”

Gwen hung up the phone. “ That was the hospital.”

“ Yeah.”

” It seems that I’m a match.”

“ Wow.”

” I need to pack a bag.”

TC and Eve walked into Whitney’s hospital room. She was talking to her doctor.

” Mom, Daddy, they’ve found a donor.”

Eve smiled. “ Really?”

” Yes. Mrs. Crane is coming in within the hour. It will take a day or two to run all the necessary tests and to prepare Whitney. But, she’s a fabulous match. I’m shocked at how good she is.”

“ So, Whitney will be ok?”, TC asked.

” We’re going to do everything possible to make it work.”

Eve came over and kissed Whitney. “ I’m going to call Chad and Simone. Tell them the good news.”

TC held Whitney’s hand and kissed it. “ You’re going to be ok, Princess. I just know it. How about I stay for awhile?”

” I’d like that.”

“ Mrs. Crane, the gown is  on your bed. I’ll be back in an hour to take you for testing.”

” Thank you.”, Gwen replied. The nurse left and Gwen turned to Ethan. “ So, I’m here.”

” Of course you are.”

” I have somewhere to be.”

” Of course you do.”

Whitney was reading a book when she heard the door open.

” Hello Whitney.”

” Hi Gwen.”
