ACT FOUR – CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

An hour passed after Eve arrived at Harmony General on a gurney with Ivy by her side. Marco was sitting down in a chair next to the room Eve was in as Ivy paced back and forth across the floor. Suddenly the door to Eve’s room opened and Dr. Samuels stepped out.

“How is she Dr. Samuels?” Ivy asked as she now stood in front of him.

“When she first arrived here, she was very weak, fragile and unresponsive. As soon as we had her situated in a room, I took some of her blood and had it tested. Knowing that she may have had mercury in her system as well, I did everything that I could to make sure that she had lots of fluids.”

Ivy and Marco both nodded as Dr. Samuels continued.

“A few minutes ago, I got the results back on her blood work.” He paused.

“Dr. Samuels?” Marco called out after Dr. Samuels became quiet.

“What is it? Did you find something else wrong with Eve?” Ivy asked with fear laced in her voice.

“Normally people who suffer from mercury poisoning don’t usually become this ill so suddenly and normally the symptoms of mercury poisoning are mistaken for something else. Every person’s case is different; you have the lucky ones and the not so lucky ones. In Eve case, she’s one of the lucky one.”

Ivy suddenly exhaled, releasing the deep breath that she had unknowingly been holding and slumped faintly against Marco’s chest.

Marco held Ivy close to his body then looked up and said “thank you” to the big guy upstairs. He so was relieved that Eve was going be alright, that he nearly forgot about Kellen.

“Dr. Samuels…”

“Yes Mr. Luciano?”

“Earlier, when you came to Kellen’s room, you were about to give me the results of those other tests you ran on him before you got that page. Tell me doc, is he or isn’t he going to get any better? Or do we have to tell Eve that her youngest son is dying?”

When Julian finally arrived in front of Carlo’s apartment complex, he slowed his running and began walking towards his front door. He decided earlier on that once he got there, he would just walk up to the door, knocked and as soon as Carlo opened to the door he would jump him. That had been his initial plan, but as he slowed his walking, he decided that that plan wasn’t going to work.

Carlos had just finished replacing his bandages when he walked over to his dresser and pulled out a new shirt. He had to find Eve fast. He was already behind because of what his brother did to him, so he had to act fast. Once he had his shirt, he walked out of his bedroom down the hallway and into the living room. When he got there, he got quite the shock as Julian stood in front of his front door glaring at him.

“Where is my wife?!” Julian shouted.

“She’s not here.” Carlo said as he walked completely into the living room.

“I know she’s here. I know that it was you who had her, not Rebecca.”

“And how would you know that?” Carlo asked.

“I just do.” Julian scoffed then narrowed his eyes. “Where is Eve?”

“She’s not here.” Carlo sneered.

“You lie!” Julian spat then moved away from the door.

Carlo wasn’t about to let Julian just look around in his apartment of his own free will, so once Julian got close enough to him, he shoved him back making him stumble backwards. Julian regained his balanced and this time when he walked up to Carlo, he drew his fist back and punched him in the face.

“You sonofab*tch! You’re gonna pay that for Julian!” Carlo shouted as he ran and tackled Julian to the floor.

Ivy was a nervous wreck as she waited for Dr. Samuels to speak. She really wanted to know the results of those test now…what was taking him so long to answer…

“Well…” Marco said.

“After looking over the new test results on Kellen, all answers indicate that…”

Ivy’s breath hitched.

“Everything is going to be fine now. When I got the last test results, it was my opinion that he wasn’t going to make throughout the night, but after getting these recent test back, I guess my opinion was wrong.”

“Thank God.” Ivy exhaled.

“I also have more good news too. William is well enough to be released.”

“Are you sure he’s healthy enough?” Marco asked.

“Yes. All of the mercury that was in his system is gone.”

“Thank you again Dr. Samuels.” Marco said then shook Dr. Samuels hand.

“I’m just glad this story is going to have a happy ending. Eve is a very special person to many here at Harmony General and we were devastated when we found out what happened to her and her family. Hopefully…no I said that wrong,” He shook his head side to side. “when Julian is found, may they finally live happily in peace.” Dr. Samuels smiled then walked off.

Carlo had just gotten to his feet when Julian smashed a wooden chair over his back. The pain was unbearable as he slammed face first into the ground below instantly spitting up blood. Carlo blinked his eyes a few times, but everything was still blurry and the room was spinning.

Julian stumbled back after hitting Carlo with that chair holding his left side. They had been going at it for what seemed like hours, but in reality twenty minutes. He had been having difficult breathing since Carlo hit him in the side with that broking piece of wood.

‘Bastard probably broke a few of my ribs.’ Julian scowled. He then looked down at Carlo to see if he was moving, but nothing. Turning back to head down the hallway to look for Eve, Julian never saw Carlo stand up and he never saw Carlo stagger over to where his television sat, reach behind it and pull out a gun.

Julian had just reached the end of the hallway when he heard some kind of clicking noise behind him. Stopping dead in his tracks, slowly he turned around and found Carlo pointing a gun at him.

“You thought that you could get away with what you did to me huh Julian? You thought that I wouldn’t get my revenge on you hmm? I told you that I would not rest until I made Eve mine…but you didn’t listen!” Carlo shouted.

“And I told you that you would never have my wife. That day you tried to kill me I told you that I wouldn’t die so easily and look at that I’m here today.” Julian sneered.

“I don’t know what the hell Eve sees in you. You’re nothing but jackass!”

“You can call me whatever you want to and that’s not going change the fact that she is my wife. Her love for me has made me a stronger man and because of her, I have two beautiful children.”

“Not for long Julian. Once I kill you this time, Eve will come to her senses and admit that she’s in love with me.”

“You delusional bastard. Eve has told you countless times that she loves me and will never love another man.”

“She’s just in denial that’s all. You brainwashed her somehow, I know you did.” Carlo scoffed and rolled his eyes.

Julian looked Carlo up and down. Seriously, did this idiot honestly believe everything he just said?!

“You’re crazy.”

“I’m not crazy, everyone else is if they can’t see how much Eve loves me!” Carlo shouted as he started banging the side of his head with his free hand.

Noticing how distracted Carlo was, Julian said a silent prayer then ran towards him. “Eve is my wife and I’m never letting her go.”

Eve was sleeping peacefully in her hospital bed as Ivy and Marco watched over her. Ivy was still worried about Julian because he had yet to be found but Marco told her that Julian would be alright as he rested his right hand on her shoulder. Suddenly, Marco’s cell phone began ringing, he looked to Ivy and told her that he would be right back then walked out of Eve’s room into the hallway.

“Marco here.”

“Mr. Luciano, I have some information about Mr. Crane.” The person said.

“What do you know?”

“Earlier tonight, Rebecca Osborne was captured and told authorities that Mr. Crane had escaped.”

‘If Julian escaped then where is he?’ Marco thought. “Is there anything else?”

“Yes sir, I had one of the guys stationed in front of your brother’s apartment and he said that he saw some man matching Mr. Crane description enter the grounds. I just pulled up out front sir.”

“Damn it! He must’ve realized that Rebecca didn’t have Eve and went to go confront Carlo. Has he come out yet?” Marco asked frantically.

“No boss not at…” the person was cut off at the sounds of gunshots.

*POP, POP*

Silence-

The hair on Marco’s neck stood straight up as everything became quiet. He was waiting for his man to finish saying what he was saying when he heard what sounded like gunshots.

“What the hell was that?! Were those gunshots?!” Marco shouted through the phone. “Answer me damn it!”

“Yes sir! I’m on my way inside now!”

Ivy was resting comfortably in her chair and was just about to dose off when Eve’s scream startled her awake.

“Eve, what is it?!” Ivy said as she took Eve by the hand.

Eve was resting comfortably, having the best dream of her life. William was chasing Kellen around in the backyard as she watched them from where she stood in the backdoor. Looking to the left, she saw Julian walking towards her with a grin on his face as big smile appeared on hers. He was half way to her when suddenly blood squirted from his mouth and he dropped to the ground dead.

Instantly, her eyes snapped open as she shot up from her pillow and screamed out his name, “JULIAN!”
