The End Result, Chapter 9 (Evian)

As they walked even farther, Julian pretended to be out of breath and she just laughed at him. Eve loved how he was so silly sometimes, it kept things interesting and she liked that. Lining the small street that ended at the beach were a row of many shops, which included surf places to buy sunglasses or hats and what not.
“Hey Eve, how do I look?” Julian said, putting on a hat.

“Surf’s up?” she said smiling.

“I don’t look that bad, do I?”

“You just need a surf board and some shorts to complete the look. How about I lay on the beach and watch you attempt to ride a wave?”

“Sure, and then they’d be dialing 911, I could see it now, wealthy sexy man gets trampled by huge wave and made to look like a fool by the many experienced surfers around him.” He said laughing.

“I noticed you added sexy in there?”

“Of course.” He said, gloating.

“I suppose I could agree with that Julian, you are quite that.”

“I am extremely sexy I think, even if I’m thirty-nine and holding.” He said, putting his arm around her.

“Now you’re head really swelled.”

“I’m just playing Eve.”

“Well, let’s keep going, unless you want to buy some things.”

“No, we can come back and look later on, but I do want to buy you one thing.”

“What’s that Julian?”

“That fitted t-shirt hanging in the window, it would look so beautiful on you.”

“It’s a little too tight.” Eve said.

“As I said, it would look very beautiful on you.” He said, smiling devilishly.

Eve turned her eyes over to a row of different shirts and burst out laughing.

“What’s so funny?”

She held up one to him and he smiled.

“Julian, drunk chicks think I’m hot, oh my God, this is hilarious!”

“Eve, are you saying that’s the only way I’d get a woman?”

“No of course not, here try it on.”

“No way, I can’t walk around with something like that.”

“And I thought you had a sense of humour.” She said smiling.

“I do, but never mind that one, I see another one that would look really good on you, or…off of you.” He said kissing her neck.

“Julian!”

“What darling?”

“You’re so naughty.”

“I’m Julian Crane, what do you expect?”

When they reached the beach, Eve was amazed at how beautiful it was, you could see nothing for miles and this was just what she needed. It certainly was peaceful and she imagined even if it were busy at the moment with families, at night, it would be just lovely. The clerk had said that there were a number of clubs that were happening into the wee hours of the morning. But that wasn’t important to Eve or to Julian. He just wanted to see her happy. Eve took her shoes off and walked along the shore, the water slightly rough and a bit cold. Lake Huron was always on the chillier side, but it didn’t matter to her. Julian sat on the sand, not caring one bit if he was covered in it. Watching Eve’s expression as she walked along there, was enough for him to know that this trip was a great idea. He hadn’t seen her in high spirits like this in so very long.

“Hi.”

Julian turned around to see a little girl standing there, about four years of age.

“Hi there.”

“Natalie, come back to the blanket, I’m sorry.” A lady said.

“It’s okay.” He said smiling.

“I like the water, see my bathing suit?” she said, pointing to a flower on it.

“It’s very pretty.”

Eve looked up to see him talking to the little girl and she smiled. Julian hadn’t been much of a father to his own children, but she knew that with his true self shining through these days, he would have been a wonderful father to their son.

“I told her not to talk to strangers, but she’s still learning.”

“They’re so innocent at this age, so naïve, but you’re right in teaching her to be cautious, you have to these days.” Julian said.

“What’s your name?” she asked, her mom, still standing there.

“Julian.”

“I’m Natalie, well we have to go now, bye.” She said waving.

“Bye now.”

Eve sat next to him after a few minutes.

“Did you have fun talking to her?” she said, hugging him.

“She’s so cute Eve.”

“She is Julian, does it make you think…”

“Yes it does, oh Eve, one day we will find him, and I know we will.”

“I hope so, I love our son so much and I just want to meet him. Seeing that little girl, it makes me wonder what he would have been like at that age. I would have loved so much to see him grow up, to see you as his father. And you would have been an amazing dad, I just know it.”

“Eve, if I hadn’t been such a fool, I wouldn’t have done all of the terrible things I did over the years. Worst of all was leaving you and not being able to raise him. I am very guilty of being an awful dad to my other kids. To think, one error in judgment cost me the life I should have had. Married to you, our son, most likely more children, oh Eve, I can’t turn back time, but I certainly wish I could. You are everything to me, you’re my world.”

“Julian, I really think this trip was worthwhile.”

“I’m glad Eve, just a chance to get to know one another with no one to bother us. You know, if I may be bold enough to ask this, if it works out and we get along, maybe...”

His voice trailed off, turning away from her for a moment.

“What is it Julian?”

“Maybe, we could move in together?” he said, taking her hand.

“Move in, oh Julian, that’s impossible, you’re married and I’m married.”

“And we could both get a divorce and start fresh. I mean of course I would love to marry you, but if you weren’t ready for that, we could at least try spending our days together.”

“That’s such a big step.”

“And so is you going away with me. After you said no to Paris, I couldn’t bear the thought of losing you Eve. This is why I think taking this trip is a better way to just take things slow.”

“Well moving in is not taking things slow, it’s just added pressure on me.”

“I know, I wanted to know what you thought.”

“Julian, I love you, I do, but, right now, that’s out of the question.”

“But maybe someday Eve, maybe we will have the chance.” He said, caressing her cheek.

“Maybe.”

“Well I’ll drop it for now, but being with you, I can’t help but be honest, it’s just how I feel, and seeing you and having you in my arms, I can’t help but express my emotions. Years ago, I would never do this with any woman or anyone at all.”

“You’d just take them to bed.”

“Exactly, but when I’m with you, I feel like I can tell you anything Eve.”

“Well, thank you for your honesty Julian, I do appreciate it.”

“I love you.”

“I love you Julian.”
