Guilty Conscience - Chapter 5 (Martin Kidnaps Little Ethan)

Julian had been drinking some strong champagne
when Rebecca walked in.

"Julian- you're not in here thinking about-" Rebecca said.

"No, of course not," Julian lied. "I was thinking
about how we're going to win that trial tomorrow."

"Oh, and you might want to start showing up at the
country club more," Rebecca said, hinting to Julian
that she was ticked off at him. "The Cuttinghams and
the Andersons completely snubbed me."

"Probably because you're such a show off,"
Julian thought sarcastically.

"Oh I'm sure it was nothing," Julian said. Rebecca
wasn't convinced.

"Julian, when I turned around to leave, I heard them
snicker and say 'where's pookey?" Rebecca said.

"Rebecca, aren't you getting a little bored of the
country club?" Julian asked.

"Julian, what's happened to you?" Rebecca asked.
"I know you're trying to fix this little mess with Eve because
of not standing up to your father, but
its like you're forgetting one very important thing."

"What?" Julian asked.

"Being a Crane, duh." Rebecca said.

"Whats that supposed to mean?" Julian asked.

"Well- you never like to do anything fun anymore-
like anything illegal- like- running from an angry
mob who would want to kill you if they found out
about all of your little secrets-" Rebecca said.

"Is this about the boat explosion again?" Julian
asked.

"I warned you, Julian." Rebecca said. "If people
found out you were involved in the boat explosion,
people would come after you if they found out."

"Why are we even bringing this up again?" Julian asked.

"Because the more you think about Eve, the more
you'll want to see Eve, then when you think
you're just helping her get rid of Liz," Rebecca shuddered
at Liz's name. "Then all you're really
doing is just giving Liz more opportunities to
expose your past to T.C!" Rebecca said. Rebecca paused,
a devious look on her face. "And I wouldn't
even have to lift a finger." Rebecca said.

"End of discussion," Julian said.

"If you and Eve got caught trying to sort out this
mess, you'd only be walking right into Liz's trap-
and she'd get everything she wanted, like Eve's
husband." Rebecca said. "I wouldn't even have to
call T.C. because Liz has the biggest mouth out of
anyone in Harmony." Rebecca said. Rebecca smiled at
Julian.

"I'll tell you what- you just sit here and think it
over while I go and get ready to go back to the country club."
Rebecca said.

"You were just there." Julian said.

"You're coming too," Rebecca said. Rebecca left the
room and stopped at the door. "One more thing, we're
going to act like a couple!" Rebecca said. Julian sighed.

"I should have known she didn't really buy that apology when
I was talking in my sleep when I was
dreaming I was apologizing to Eve," Julian said. Julian left to
get dressed for the country club. How
did he keep getting himself into these situations?
Even when he had finally started to turn his life
around, the mistakes he made in the past were
really a classic case of what goes around comes around.

Rebecca and Julian had gotten ready and left
for the country club.

Martin had sneaked into the mansion. He watched them
leave from a distance.

"Damn Cranes," Martin said. "At that trial tomorrow, Julian and
his wife are going down." Martin said.
"Because there won't be a child for them to have
a trial over." Martin waited for Phyliss to leave
Ethan Martins room. He sneaked in.

"Hey lady-" Ethan Martin cried, forgetting Phyliss's name.
Martin got him to be quiet.

"Kid, you want to see your mommy, right?" Martin asked.
Ethan Martin nodded. "Listen, don't make
a sound and we'll get out of here." Martin told
Ethan Martin that he was his grandfather. Martin picked
Ethan Martin up and headed for the door.
He quickly got Ethan Martin back into the room
when he heard Julian and Rebecca walk by. Once they
walked the opposite direction he sneaked off with
Ethan Martin. He knew how to get out of the mansion
without getting caught.

Theresa sighed with releif when the prison cell
opened and her bail had been paid.

"How did you come up with the money on such short
notice?" Theresa asked.

"We couldn't stand to see you in that awful prison
cell any longer," Pilar said. Luis nodded. "We all
chipped in as much as we could." Luis didn't tell
his sister the real expense of paying her bail.

Whitney watched on. She couldn't be happier that
Theresa was out of jail, but she felt terrible for
Luis and Pilar, and Miguel who was working to support
a daughter of his own. Miguel didn't have to pay, but
she knew the expense would effect him too. The Lopez-Fitzgeralds
had a hard enough time making ends meet.

"If only Theresa were more down to earth," Whitney said.

"She just does things without thinking sometimes,"
Fox said.

"Fox, I know you're just trying to help, and nothing
personal just so theres no confusion, but the Cranes
have never exactly had financial trouble." Whitney
said.

"Guilty," Fox admitted. "I just hope she doesn't
get carried away at the trial and start talking
about, you know." Fox said. Whitney nodded.

"If Theresa brings up fate at the trial, it could be
all over for Theresa." Whitney said.

Meanwhile, at the Counrty Club, Rebecca had been
clinging to Julian's arm and grinning.

"I don't see why we have to do this," Julian whispered in her ear.

"Because....if you don't start showing up at the
country club more often people will start to talk-
and you know how fast juicy gossip spreads around
here!" Rebecca made a rude comment about a couple
that was considered 'new money.' "Word gets out in
the country club then who knows- tabloid reporters
could be stalking your precious Eve at the hospital!" Rebecca said.

"Damn tabloids," Julian said. Julian stopped in his
tracks. Everything around him disappeared as he saw
Eve sitting at a table in the background at a hospital meeting
that was being held at the country
club. Rebecca's jaw dropped when she realized what
Julian was staring at. She quickly dragged him
away before Eve could turn her head.

"Julian you have to stop acting so love sick!" Rebecca said.
Julian sighed. "Julian- remember
what I told you earlier- if you go near Eve, Liz
will just have more of a reason to expose your
past to T.C.!" Rebecca said.

"Right," Julian sighed.

"And have you forgotten where we are?" Rebecca asked.

"The country club?" Julian asked.

"That's right!" Rebecca said. Rebecca started clinging to Julians arm and telling everyone
how great her pookey was.

Meanwhile, Theresa looked through some pictures of
little Ethan after she got home.

"I'll have my son back tomorrow," Theresa said.
