Lost Cause, Chapter 11

Julian picked up his phone and called Eve’s cellphone. And, again, he got her voicemail.

“ Eve, I hope you get these messages. TC KNOWS! He KNOWS EVERYTHING! And, I mean EVERYTHING! Liz told him. PLEASE CALL ME! I don’t know where you are. I just need to know that you’re safe. I can’t tell you what mood TC is in. I thought for sure he was going to kill me, but he didn’t. Darling, please call!”

Julian had called Eve’s answering service. She couldn’t be reached by them because ever since Simone’s hospitalization, Eve had taken time off from the hospital. He had called the floor where Simone was staying, and the nurse had told him Eve left for the evening.

Julian called the Russell household. Again, no answer.

Julian put on his clothes. He didn’t know what to do. He felt that Eve needed him. He couldn’t sit around waiting anymore, so he got in his car. He had made sure that anyplace Eve could call him would know to forward her calls to his cellphone. He was going to check at the hospital first. Just in case.

Whitney sat by Simone’s bedside.

“ Hey, Simone. I brought you a few of your favorite things. Like your India.Arie CD. I thought we could listen to it together. I found the needlepoint that you were doing. I am amazed by all the creative designs that you love to tackle. I think you wanted to give it to Daddy to hang in his office. If I’m right, it would go right in that empty space on his diploma wall. I thought that if I helped you, I could finish it by his birthday.”

Whitney did the needlepoint and was enjoying herself when she heard the door open, and looked up to see Julian.

” Mr. Crane?”

” Whitney, I need to find your mother. Do you know where she is?”

” Actually, no. Last time I spoke with her on the cellphone, she told me she was leaving Simone for the night, and going home.”

” I’ve called your house. No answer.”

” Really?”

” Do you know where your father is?”

Whitney looked at Julian as if he had grown horns. Was Julian Crane really asking for her father?

” Haven’t heard from him. “

“ Oh. Well, if you hear from your mother, PLEASE tell her to call me. No matter the time. I need to talk to her. It….it’s a matter of life and death.”

Whitney didn’t have time to digest that or ask further questions because Julian was out the door.  She shook her head and went back to her needlepoint.

TC Russell stood outside of his house. Part of him wanted to just run to the Shed and lock himself in. But, this wasn’t the time. He had to hear the truth from Eve’s mouth. He had to hear her side of the story before he made any drastic decisions.

Drastic decisions. TC shook his head. He was as surprised as Julian that he didn’t kill Julian on the spot after his confessions. But, something inside of him prevented him from committing the act. He didn’t even know what it was, but he had always thought if that situation presented itself that he would be capable of murder. That he didn’t, shocked him.

TC opened the door and yelled out.

” Eve! Eve! I need to talk to you! Come down to the living room!”

When there was no answer, TC yelled out even louder.

“ EVE! COME TO THE LIVING ROOM!”

When there was no answer, TC shrugged. He didn’t know whether to be relieved or pissed. He wanted to get this conversation over. He wanted the truth to finally be told, so that they could go from there.

Since Eve wasn’t there, he decided to fix himself a sandwich. After he did that, he brought it back into the living room, and sat down at the desk. He’d take care of some family business while he waited. Pushing the answering machine he heard this:

“ TC Honey, it’s me. I’m finished at the hospital for the night. Lucky for me I got your message at the hospital. Sure, I’ll meet you there. Love you.”

TC replayed the message and checked the time of the message. He shook his head.

“ I never left a message for you, Eve. Where are you?”

Eve walked into the Blue Note. It was dimly lit. She looked around in confusion.

“ TC’s not here, sister dear.”

Eve spun around to see Liz.

” Liz. What do you mean? Did you send him home?”

” Stupid bitch. TC was NEVER here. ‘ I’ left the message for you at the hospital.”

Eve felt a chill go up her spine. She looked into Liz’s eyes for the first time. Something was different.

” Why would you leave a message for me?”

” Because, I wanted to tell you to your face. I told TC.”

” What are you talking about?”

” I did what you were unwilling to do. I told TC THE TRUTH!”

Eve stared at Liz. “ You’re lying.”

Liz laughed at Eve. “ Nope. I told him all of it….you and me being sisters. You being a drugged out whore of Julian Crane’s. All of it. How does it FEEL, Evie! You’re busted. Your perfect little world, blown apart.”

Eve just stared at Liz for a few moments. And, then, as if she was looking down at someone else, Eve saw this woman take her fist and punch Liz to the ground. And before Liz could get up, this woman was down on the ground with Liz, punching and kicking her.

“ You spiteful bitch! How DARE YOU tell TC now! What the fuck is wrong with you!”

Eve and Liz rolled around and fought on the ground with Eve getting three hits in for every blow Liz managed to return. They separated and Liz crawled behind the bar. Eve got up onto her feet once again, and yelled at Liz.

” Well, your job is done. Go back to your flea-bitten island, you bitter shrew. God, I’m so glad I’m finally free of you. I’m going to TC and see if we can work things out.”

“ Not so fast, bitch. You won’t be working things out with TC or anyone else.”

” Oh, I think I will.”

” Well, my ‘friend’ here says that you won’t.”

Eve stared at Liz, who was now holding a 9mm gun pointed directly at Eve.
