Sam and Whitney sat there, stunned, as TC explained the entire night to him. How Liz had told him about being Eve’s sister, and the past of Eve and Julian. About how Julian had come to him worried about Eve, and they wound up at The Blue Note. Julian sat at the end, not saying anything.
“ TC, ok, I get it. You think Liz shot Eve for revenge?”, Sam asked.
“ Sammy, I think it’s the only explanation.”
“ She hated Mom that much? Boy, she had us fooled.”
“ I know, Princess. She played all of us.”
Sam’s phone rang. “ Chief Bennett…..yes…..I understand…thanks for alerting me, Chief.” Sam closed his phone. “ That was the Fire Chief. They put out the fire at the Blue Note, but I have some bad news.”
“ What?”, TC asked.
“ In the rubble, they found a body.”
“ Liz”, TC, Whitney and Julian said simultaneously.
“ That’s the assumption. The body’s going to the Morgue. I have to go over there.” Sam got up and hugged TC. “ I’m going to stay with you, until….” Sam didn’t get to finish his sentence because Grace arrived.
“ Thanks for calling me, Sam. I finished the crisis at the B&B. I can take it from here.”
“ Grace, he’s in bad shape. Did YOU know that Liz was Eve’s sister?”
“ Yes, I did.” Sam looked at Grace in shock. “ Sam, Eve is my best friend. If I explained to you about Liz, then I’d have to explain about Julian.”
“ You knew about Julian too? How long?”
“ After the miscarriage of our baby. I think Eve was relieved to finally be able to confide in someone.”
“ Julian’s been hovering around. He hasn’t left.”
“ And, he’s not going to, Sam. He loves Eve.”
“ You’re serious? You actually believe that?”, Sam whispered.
“ Yes, I do.”
“ Do I dare ask the next question?”
“ No. “
Sam kissed Grace. “ I’m going to the Morgue. As soon as there’s any info, tell me.”
“ I will.”
Sam walked away and Grace went over to TC and hugged him. “ I know this is hard.”
“ Grace, you have no idea.”
“ I’m a cop’s wife. I live with the fear Sam won’t come home. I don’t need to remind you of the two times it got bad over the years.”
“ No.”
“ Eve is strong. She’s going to make it. She has too much to live for.”
“ Grace, I don’t even know what I’m supposed to be feeling right now. I mean, Eve and Julian Crane?”
“ TC, it was before you even met.”
“ I know that. It’s just that….”
“ TC, don’t be unfair to Eve. You have to hear her side of things before you decide anything permanent.”
“ I hate Julian Crane. With every fiber of my being. The man ruined my tennis career. And, he’s in love with my wife.”
“ How..how do you know that?”
“ Because, he told me.”
“ Why would Julian tell you anything?”
“ I sort of had a knife to his throat at the time.”
“ TC!”
“ I had to know if what Liz told me was the truth. ….Sam told us that a body was found in the rubble. He thinks it’s Liz.”
“ I’m sorry for anyone losing their life, but she was a miserable human being. “
“ I learned that a little bit too late. It might cost me Eve.”
“ TC, why don’t we go to the Chapel. We can tell the nurse where we’re going.”
“ Thanks, Grace.”
Whitney sits next to Julian. “ So, the woman you talked about to me when we were in the elevator was my mother?”
“ Yes. “
“ Wow.”
“ Whitney, your mother and I…”
“ Does she love you too? Does she not love my father?”
“ I don’t know what’s in Eve’s heart towards me. She’s forgiven me the pain I caused her in the past, but as far as feelings go, I haven’t any idea. I do know she loves your father and you girls very much.”
“ Girls! Oh God! Simone! I have to go check on Simone!” Whitney jumped up and left Julian.
“ Barry White or Luther Vandross?”
“ Barry. Luther learned everything from him.”, Simone replied. “ Hmmm….Stevie Wonder or Prince?”
“ That’s like comparing apples and oranges. Different decades. Different styles of music. That’s not fair. They’re both genius’.”, Fox answered.
“ Maybe.”, Simone looked at the clock. “ Man, it’s been a long time. The nurse said that she was going to page my mother. My mother keeps her pager with her at all times. ..Maybe she just ignored the page.”, Simone said sarcastically.
“ Hey. None of that. The woman who’s been hovering around your bed since the night you came in will be here 2.2 seconds after she gets the page from the nurse.”
“ Yeah, I guess you’re right. It’s just that I’m awake, and no Mom, Dad, or Whit..”
Just then, Whitney burst through the door. “ Nicholas, I’m…..SIMONE? Simone, you’re awake?”
Whitney came over and hugged her sister for dear life.
“ Nice to see you too, Whit. Where’s Mom and Dad?”
“ Um, where’s your nurse. Maybe I should talk to her.”
Simone looked at Whitney. “ Whitney, what’s the matter. I’m a quick study, but I can tell now when you’re covering up something. You can’t lie to me as well as you used to.”, Simone said sarcastically.
“ Nicholas, please excuse us.”
“ Sure, Whitney. Simone, good to see you awake. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
“ Thanks, Nicholas. “
Fox left, and Simone stared at Whitney again. “ What is it, Whitney?”
“ I really think I should get your nurse. “ Whitney was about to get up when Simone grabbed her arm hard and kept hold of it.
“ Simone..”
“ Spill it! I’m not that weakling anymore!”
“ Mom was shot! She’s in surgery right now. We don’t know if she’s going to live or die!”, Whitney began crying.
“ Mom….shot? Who would shoot our mother?”
“ Liz.”
“ LIZ? WHY?”
“ Because she’s Mom’s sister and she hates her.”
“ Huh?”
“ It’s been a long night, Simone. I better explain it to you.”
