Lost Cause, Chapter 19
by SIPort

Whitney and Simone were in her room when TC came in.

“ Daddy?” Whitney asked.

” Your mother made it through surgery. It’s going to be touch and go. They’re not promising anything. All we can do is pray.”

” Did they get the bullets out?”, Simone asked.

” Yes. But, the bullets aren’t the only problem.”

” What else?”, Whitney asked.

” Your mother got hurt in the head. She’s got bruising on the brain. The neurosurgeon went in and  tried to fix the problem, but it’s touch and go too.”

” So, we have more than one way that we could lose Mom.”, Simone cried.

” Sugarbear, you have to think positive. Your mother is a strong woman. A fighter. She loves us and wants to be with us. We have to think that she’s going to come out of this ok. The nurse told me that it would be a few hours before I’d be allowed into your mother’s room. I’m going home to take a shower and maybe a nap.”

” You do that, Daddy. I know I didn’t help the situation, and now with Mom..”

“ Sugarbear, don’t worry about me. You get your rest. Whitney, you coming?”

” Yes, Daddy.”

Both TC and Whitney kissed Simone on their way out.

Simone picked up the phone and dialed.

“ Hello.”

” Howdy stranger.”

” SIMONE! SIMONE!! IS THAT YOU!”, Kay yelled into the phone.

” Yeah, it’s me.”

Simone didn’t hear anything on the other line for a moment. Then, she heard what sounded like crying.

” Kay..Kay….are you crying?”

” Yes, you silly bitch. Tears are running down my face. I can’t believe it. When did you..”

” Only a couple of hours ago.”

” Simone, you scared the SHIT out of us. Don’t EVER do anything that stupid EVER AGAIN! GOT IT!?”

” Got it.”

“ Simone, he’s no more worth it than Miguel is.”

” Excuse me?”

Kay laughed. “ Yeah, you heard me right. I thought about all the times when I should have been a good friend to you and told you the truth about Chad. Instead, most times I twisted things because I wanted you to be as jacked up as I was because of Miguel. I’m sorry for being so selfish, Simone.”

“ It’s ok, Kay.”

” No, it’s not. You’ve been a good friend to me, Simone. I know I’m not the easiest person to get along with.”

  ” No!”

” Don’t be mean. But, you’ve always been in my corner, and I appreciate it. I’m so glad I got to TELL you all of this. I was so worried I wouldn’t be able to.”, Kay’s voice had dropped to a whisper.

” I’m sorry, Kay, for being  so selfish. I can’t believe I almost threw away my life over Chad.”

“ You DO know that Whitney kicked him to the curb.”

“ Yeah, she told me.”

” Good. Your sister is still on my shit list, but at least she did something decent.”

” So, how’s the baby?”

” Ugh. I’m sick nearly all the time. And Miguel..well, he’s SO not into it, but then, what else can I expect? This isn’t CHARITY’S baby.”

” Kay, don’t be bitter.”

” Why not? I realize just a bit too late that I’m the biggest fool in town. I deserve better, Simone.”

” Amen, Kay. Amen.”

” Speaking of better, did you get to meet the total hottie that saved you?”

” Kay..”

” He’s a total cutie. You should go for it.”

” Kay, I’m in a hospital bed. He rescued me from a suicide attempt. Not exactly the makings of a great romance.”

” Oh, I disagree, Simone. How many of them have we read when the heroine is at her lowest point, and doesn’t think that she can take anymore, only to find – THE ONE – who makes her forget all that previous pain.”

” Just books, Kay.”

” Ok…if you say so.”

Just then, Fox walked into the room carrying a huge bouquet of flowers.

” Um, Kay..I have to go.”

” What, your Dad’s there?”

” No…it’s..I gotta go.”

” Oh shit! It’s him, isn’t it? The hottie? Simone?”

Simone hung up the phone.

“ So, you’re back.”

“ Yeah, I’m back. I brought you these.” Fox gave her the flowers.

” Thanks. They’re beautiful.”

” And, I brought you this.” He handed her a set of beauty products.

” Um…”

” I don’t know them, but you’re a female; you’ve been out of commission for a few weeks; I thought you could use them.”

” Well, I know this brand, and I know you don’t exactly get it at Walgreens.”

” I done good?”

” You done good.”, Simone said smiling.

“ How are you?”

” The doctors say that I’m doing fine. I have a couple of more days of observation and then I can go home.” <>

“ That’s great. Um…how’s your mother?”

Simone got quiet. “ She made it through surgery. We have to hope for the best.”

” Yep. That’s all you can do. She’s fighting.”

” How do you know?”

“ Any woman who was as devoted to you when you were sick –well, her family means the world to her. She wouldn’t give that up without the fight of her life.”

” Thanks. I needed that.”

” I, um…think we should formally meet.”

” Oh, you’re right. I’m Simone Russell. Former suicide jumper, but very glad to be here, and don’t plan on being that stupid ever again.”

” Well, I’m Nicholas Foxworth Crane. “ Simone stared at him.

 “ D..did you say CRANE?”

” Yes.”

” Oh shit.”
