My Baby’s Gone, Chapter 4

Gwen was making final preparations for Sarah’s funeral when Ethan came into the Crane living room. He waited until Gwen hung up the phone.

“ You were finishing up arrangements for the funeral?”, Ethan asked.

” Yes.”

” I would have helped you.”

” I don’t want your help. I can bury MY child myself.”

” Gwen, Sarah was OUR child.”

“ Whatever, Ethan. Go to Theresa.”

” I don’t want Theresa. I want you.”

Gwen looked at Ethan in disgust. “ You know, I’m trying to figure out if you KNOW you’re lying to me, or if you’re REALLY this delusional. Either way, I want no part of it. We are FINISHED, Ethan, FINISHED. I want NOTHING to do with you. Ever again.”

Just then, Ethan and Gwen looked into the foyer to see Crane maids bringing down luggage. They put it at the door. The maid came into the living room,

“ We packed everything, Mrs. Winthrop.”

” Thank you, Sally.”

The maid left, and Ethan asked Gwen, “ Gwen, why did the maids pack your belongings.”

” Because this is no longer my home, Ethan. I called my father, and he is more than willing to let me stay at his house.”

” Gwen, how are we supposed to work things out if you’re at another house?”

” That’s the entire point, Ethan. We’re not. Ethan, I don’t care if we took vows. Everytime I look at you, I see Sarah. I loved you so much that I WANTED to believe in you. If you’re staying with me out of guilt, Ethan, you can stop it. Just stop it. I realized something. It was MY fault that Sarah died. “

” No Gwen…”

” Yes, it was. You see, I let my love for you make me weak, Ethan. Sadly, the way that you can’t stay away from Theresa, I lose all my brains and find myself going against all my instincts with you. What were my first instincts? To take the job in New York, and distance myself from you and Theresa. But, my weakness for you, let me get talked into marrying you because I loved you so much. Even though you lied to me on our wedding day, I still went through with it. My instincts to leave you were strong. Why…why didn’t  I listen to them? Instead, I let my weakness for you go against my instincts. And, because of that, my daughter is DEAD, instead of being alive. We have no marriage, Ethan. I don’t care if this is some severe guilt trip on your part, and I don’t care anymore.

I finally realize that even if I have to spend the next ten years looking, that there has to be a man out there who will love ME and ME ALONE.

Go to Theresa. Don’t go to Theresa. I simply don’t care what you do with that BITCH anymore. I don’t want it to have anything to do with my life anymore. I’ve had enough. My dead baby is the last price I’m willing to give for this merry-go-round that we’ve been on for the past four years.”

” Gwen, I do love you.”

“ I don’t care. You’re lying and I’m not going to give you the chance to hurt me anymore. After the funeral, please don’t bother me anymore, Ethan. We can handle the rest through lawyers.  I don’t want to see you. Ever again.”

Gwen left the living room, and the house.

Eve knocked on the office door. The young woman at the computer looked up.

” Dr. Russell! So good to see you!”

Eve entered the office and closed the door behind her.

“ Hi, Lisa. How is your mother?”

” She’s doing so much better. Dr. Russell, I can’t thank you enough for all the help you’ve given her. Not only the treatments, but helping me with the paperwork so that I got my mother in that study.”

” You’re very welcome.”

” And, of course, I have to thank you for your recommendation for the Physican Assistant’s Program.”

” How’s that going?”

” I just got my latest grades. I have a cumulative 3.86 average.”

“ That’s great Lisa.” Eve sighed. “ Lisa, I need a favor.”

” Anything for you, Dr. Russell.”

” I need to look into the mainframe computer files.”

” Dr. Russell..”

” I know..it’s against the rules. But, I wouldn’t ask if it wasn’t important. And, if I didn’t know that I can trust you.”

Lisa thought about it. “ I can’t help you personally, Dr. Russell. BUT…if I were to go on a long break, say to the cafeteria and the bathroom, and I just happened to leave you in here, with the computer..you know how to maneuver the codes?”

” Yes. I really appreciate this, Lisa.”

” Dr. Russell, you’ve always helped me through the years. I was just a lowly file clerk when you began talking with me and encouraging me. I’ll lock the door on the way out. I can give you 20 minutes.”

“ Thanks.”

Lisa left the room, and Eve sat down at her computer. She didn’t know exactly what she was looking for, or why her mind had made the leaps that it has, but she had to begin to get proof, one way or the other.

Eve got into the computer system that she wanted. She entered the name in question.

” Beth Wallace”

And, began her search for the truth.

Whitney and Fox stood in the doorway to her apartment.

” Fox, I can’t believe how a few pieces can change the entire look and feel of a room.”

” Your choices were fabulous, Whitney.”

“ I want to thank you again for sticking up with me where Rebecca is concerned.”

” That was no problem. Rebecca doesn’t remotely concern me.”

” But, one day, she’ll be your stepmother.”

” No. She’ll be my father’s wife. Big difference. Enough about Rebecca. Why don’t we go out and get some dinner. Celebrate the new apartment.”

” Maybe we could get pizza and take it over to Theresa’s?”

Fox liked Theresa and all, but he wanted to spend time alone with Whitney.” Or, maybe we could have a nice dinner at the Lobster Shack.”

” I guess that would be fine.”

“ Good. Let’s go.”

Beth was trying to calm down Martin, who was a fussy baby, when she heard the doorbell ring.

Precious got the door.

” Antonio. What are you doing here?”

” Is something wrong with the baby?”

” Of course not.” Beth put the baby in the stroller. “ Precious, take the baby to my mother.” Precious rolled Martin out of the living room.

” So, what’s up, Antonio?”

” Are you back with Luis yet?”

” No. I hardly have any time with Luis, and that’s because of you!”

“ Me?”

“ Yes. Since Sheridan has been locked up, it’s all Luis thinks or talks about. He won’t leave it alone, especially since you won’t let Sheridan see him.”

” I did what I thought was best. If Luis has contact with Sheridan, he can confuse her. This way, she’s going to remember our love and our relationship.”

” I guess I see your point.”

” So, you have to work harder to get Luis back. I’ve taken Sheridan out of the picture. Take advantage.”

” I’m trying! In fact I called him over here to help me with Martin. “

There was a knock on the door.

“ That’s Luis! You have to leave through the back door.”

Antonio left the Wallace living room, and Beth opened the door.

” Beth, was that Antonio’s car on the street?”

” No. Why would Antonio be here?”

” I don’t know. I told you that I wasn’t speaking to him anymore.”

” Luis, he’s just doing what he thinks is best for Sheridan. After all, he is her husband.”

” No REAL husband of Sheridan’s would EVER be in league with Alistair Crane. Nobody decent would EVER agree to anything Alistair suggested. I knew something was wrong with my brother, and I’m going to prove it!”

Beth’s mind was reeling with ideas. She was going to meet Antonio away from the house. Luis must never believe that she’s in league with Antonio. Or Alistair. She’d win Luis back. She had to. She and Martin would make him the perfect family.
