My Baby’s Gone – Prologue

“ I want my baby! Why won’t you give me back my baby? I know my baby! Wouldn’t you know your baby if you saw it, no matter if you’ve been separated? I KNOW MY BABY! I want MY SON BACK! You have no right to take my baby away from me and give it to Beth! I don’t care what she says – THAT IS MY SON! I KNOW MY BABY! Wouldn’t you know your baby? Why doesn’t anyone believe that a mother knows her child? Why are you all willing NOT to believe the bond between a mother and her child? GIVE ME BACK MY BABY!”

Just then, the nurse injected Sheridan with a heavy sedative.

“ My baby…my baby….my baby….I know my baby….my baby….my baby..”

Eve Russell sat up in her bed. She looked over to TC, who was still asleep. Eve was soaking with perspiration.

They had returned to Harmony from Los Angeles just in time to see Sheridan sedated and then locked up in the Psych Ward. From then she was transferred to Pine Oaks Sanitarium, where she was locked up with the hard core of psychotics in the region.

Eve got up and put on her robe and went downstairs. She sat on her couch. She’d had the same dream about Sheridan every night for over 3 weeks. She didn’t quite understand why Sheridan was haunting her. She wanted to talk to Julian, but ever since the happenings in Los Angeles, she felt there were too many eyes watching her. Yet, she longed to talk to Julian. After finding out that Grace had actually chosen David over Sam, Eve had cried for hours. So many of her lies had cost so much already, and she didn’t know what to do.

Well, at least one blessing had happened: Liz was OUT of her house. Whitney had made demands of her and TC, the first one being her own place to live. Eve smiled at the thought of the moment she told TC, in front of Liz, that Whitney should have the garage apartment. Liz agreed, smiling through her gritted teeth, and she agreed that she should move out and in with Antonio. Eve sighed. Though she wanted Liz out of Harmony, she’ll accept her being OUT of her house. And, because of the absolute disaster with Chad, Whitney admitted to her mother that any dreams of singing left with Chad, so Liz can’t threaten her with that anymore. Simone had even agreed for family therapy. She was almost as hard to convince as TC, but he decided to go along with it, for the family’s sake.

So, even though everything seemed to be going on the right track where her family was concerned, something in the back of Eve’s mind gave her chills. She hoped that she would figure out why.

Julian was listening to the tape of Eve that he had. It was all he had. Rebecca was being a hound. She was pressuring Julian to marry her, using the blackmail material about Sheridan.

Julian looked over at a picture of his sister as a little girl. His heart sank.

Sheridan was locked up, and Julian just felt that something was so ‘wrong’ about it. Julian had been stunned when Alistair showed up at Harmony Hospital to offer his daughter his sympathies. He gave Luis and Sheridan a song and dance about how he regretted the death of their child, offering them proof. That moment sent a chill down Julian’s spine. His hands began to shake and the only person he could look at during this was Eve. He could SEE her reliving everything that had happened with their son, and it pained him not to be able to help her.

Alistair was being helpful, which is a bad thing. Then, the oddest thing happened. Antonio Lopez-Fitzgerald actually accepted Alistair’s help. His wasn’t the only face in shock. You could have knocked over Pilar and Luis with a feather when Antonio accepted Alistair’s help.

His suspicions about all of this were even further confirmed when he went to Pine Oaks and was told that he wasn’t on the list of ‘permitted’ visitors. In fact, there were only two on the list: Alistair and Antonio.

When he asked Alistair about this, he told Julian that it was none of his concern. Julian shook his head. He knew he had wronged his sister, but he also knew this was wrong. If only he could talk to Eve.

God, how he missed her.

He drank his brandy and listened some more to the tapes.

“ YOU NO-GOOD SONUVABITCH!”, Luis said, before he landed a blow on Antonio’s face.

“ You have NO RIGHT keeping me away from Sheridan.”

” I have every right, ‘ brother’. Remember, I AM her husband.”

” Only because she PITIED you.”

“ Luis, don’t say such things to your brother.”, Pilar tried to placate.

“ I don’t think so, Mama. It’s time that Antonio learned the truth. Sheridan loved me: First, last and always. She married you OUT OF PITY. If you hadn’t of been sick, she wouldn’t have even come into the church to see you. “

” You seduced her. You tricked her.”

” Bullshit. From the moment Sheridan regained her memory, she remembered our love, and she wanted to be with me.”

” You lie!”

” I lie? The man who has gotten in bed with Alistair Crane has the NERVE to call ME a liar? I don’t think so.”

” Sheridan’s feelings are part of her mental illness.”

” Sheridan is NOT crazy.”

“ She thinks yours and Beth’s baby is hers. That shows a break with reality. As her husband, it’s my duty to get her well.”

” And locking her up is the ONLY way your pathetic mind could think of to keep me away from Sheridan. Well, it won’t work. I will NEVER give up on Sheridan. I love her. And, she loves me.”

” She’s my wife.”

” A mere technicality. I’m tired of placating you. Sheridan and I WILL be together. It is our destiny. And none of your tricks is going to stop me. EVER.”

Luis left the house and Pilar went over to Antonio.

“ Antonio, why don’t you let Luis see Sheridan?”

” And let him poison her against me? No way, Mama. Once Sheridan is herself again, she’ll be able to tell Luis that she loves me and not him.”

” Antonio..”

“ Case closed, Mama.”
