The Road Not Taken

In all his fifteen years, he had never met a girl like her. He watched her from his porch as she struck his brother out for the third time in a row. A smirk lit up her face as she took her baseball cap off her head and stared at the man in front of her.

“Face it Luis, you’re not going to get a hit, not with me pitching.”

”Kay Bennett.” Luis laughed. “You’re too cocky for your own good.”

Her blue eyes sparkled with mischief, “Miggs already knows, he can’t beat me. Why don’t you give it up too?”

Luis looked over at his brother, who was chuckling on the porch. “What? You gave up because a girl beat you?” He questioned.

Miguel stood from his seat, “I’m not stupid bro, I realized a long time ago, that Kay’s pitch is too much for me. There’s no need in me making a fool of myself everyday against her.”

“Well, I suppose I should give it up too.” Luis laughed. “For today.”

Kay laughed, “You’re going to practice and try again aren’t you?” She questioned. “Fine by me, I always like a good challenge.”

“Children.” Luis spoke smirking as he walked past her. “Never give us old guys a break do you?”

“You’re not old.” Kay smirked. “You just can’t handle my pitch.”

“Yeah, yeah.” Luis laughed as he walked into the house, leaving Miguel and Kay along laughing in the yard.

Miguel walked over to Kay, a smile on his face as he picked up the bat his brother had been holding. “Did you enjoy that?” He grinned.

“What do you think?” Kay asked throwing Miguel the baseball. Looking down at her watch she frowned. “You know if we’re going to the carnival tonight, we need to get our English homework done.”

“Do we have too?” Miguel whined. “Its stupid! I don’t understand why I have to write a essay on some stupid poem.”

“Its not a stupid poem Miggs.” Kay laughed, “Its one of the most popular poems there is.”

“Its still stupid.” He frowned as they walked into his house. “I hate poetry.”

“Hey, I told you not to take Advanced English, but did you listen to me? No, you never listen.”

“I had to take it.” He frowned. “You were taking it and I knew I couldn’t pass English without your help.”

“You poor thing.” Kay teased as she flopped down on her best friend’s bed. “It shouldn’t take us long to get this done. I’ll help you with yours and then I’ll worry about mine when I get home.”

“After the carnival?” Miguel questioned. “Because we have to go to the carnival.”

Kay nodded her head as she opened her notebook, “We are going to the carnival. Simone said she’d call here to see what time to meet us there.”

“Sounds good to me.” Miguel nodded sitting down beside Kay. “So, The Road Not Taken, is some sort of huge deal huh?” He asked scanning the poem. “It looks kinda boring to me.”

“Its not boring.” Kay smiled. “If you want my help, you need to read it first. Honestly, I think the bottom lines pretty much sum up what its all about though.” She spoke pointing at the paper Miguel held in his hand.

“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference”

Miguel read the words out lead and looked at Kay, “So some dude walked down a old road, and that changed his life? Big deal.”

With an eye roll Kay smacked him on the shoulder, “It means a lot more than that.” She laughed. “We’re going to be here for awhile.” She sighed.

Miguel frowned. “Yeah, looks like it. Want something to drink?”

“A soda?” Kay asked with a smile.

“In a glass with two cubes of ice?” Miguel questioned with a grin.

“Of course.” She nodded.

Watching as her best friend walked off, Kay let out a sigh as she relaxed on his bed. She looked around his messy room and smiled. In the floor his baseball equipment was laying in a huge pile. It was baseball that had kept them close, as they got older. Kay knew everything about Miguel, and he knew her just as well. They had a special kind of friendship, one that she was sure nothing would ever hurt.

“Miguel?” A female voice called into the room.

Looking up Kay frowned as Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald bounded into the room. “Theresa.”

“Oh, its you.” Theresa spoke crossing her arms. “Do you know where my brother is?” She questioned glaring at the younger girl.

“In the kitchen.” Kay spoke sitting up. “You know I’m surprised you’re home. I read in the paper that Ethan Crane was home. Shouldn’t you be in the bushes of the Crane Estate, preparing to leap when the poor guy walks out of his front door?”

“Cute.” Theresa spoke rolling her eyes. “I assumed you’d be at the carnival with my brother. “I hear they have a new ride called Path to Paradise, sounds like the perfect place for you to try to convince my brother you’re worth his time.”

“This from the girl who has planned a wedding to a man she’s never met.” Kay laughed watching as Theresa’s eyes got large.

”What? I haven’t.” She began stopping as Kay began to laugh.

“Miguel showed me your little wedding planner. I must admit I was a little disappointed at the fact that I’m not in the wedding party.” Kay grinned.

Theresa’s mouth dropped over, but she couldn’t speak. Instead she swung her hair off her shoulder and let out a huff. “I’m so not listening to you.” She spat. “I need to talk to my brother.”

“Like I said, he’s in the kitchen.” Kay spoke looking back down at her English book.

“Fine.” Theresa muttered turning and walking away.

“Loser.” Kay whispered to herself, chuckling as she heard Theresa stomp into the kitchen.

Two hours later, Kay was sitting on the floor staring up at her best friend. Her eyes were narrowed as she watched him read the poem out loud one more time.

”This is stupid.” He spoke looking down at her.

“Miggs, its getting late, you’ve wrote one sentence since we’ve been here and the Carnival isn’t going to last all night.”

“I know.” He frowned. “We could just forget the essay and go have fun.” He smiled.

“We could.” Kay agreed.

“But if we do that, and I don’t pass this essay, I could fail English.”

“No, you will fail English.” Kay corrected. “I’ve saw your grades, trust me you need this grade.” Watching Miguel stare back at his books, Kay frowned. “Miggs, its up to you, the carnival or this essay?”

Letting out a groan he picked up his pencil. “School’s more important.” He spoke with a small chuckle. “I mean its not like missing the carnival tonight will change my life or anything.”
