Chapter Two: Into The Past

Jazz music filled the smokey club. The lights were dimmed so low that
if it weren't for the lights on the stage a person could easily have
tripped over their own two feet. The room was hushed except for the
music and the singer on stage. The haunting music left people speechless
as they listened to her sing.

"My baby's gone
And I'm left all alone
You'll never know
This pain that still grows"

The stages lights dimmed as the club's normal lights became brighter.

"Eve! Eve!" People chanted for her.

She smiled sadly as the audience as she walked off the stage and into
the arms of her waiting lover.

"That was great but what do you expect from the world's greatest singer?"
He complimented her as he kissed her passionately. "Come, there is
someone that wants to meet you."

"Oh? Well can it wait? I need to change," she said as she looked up
into his warm brown eyes.

"You look stunning. He's waiting for you right now my love. Come," he
said as he pulled her with him to a booth in a quiet corner of the
club.

"Eve this is Jackson Heartstone...."

"THE Jackson Heartstone?" Eve gasped out. "Mr. Heartstone it's an
honor to meet you!"

The two men laughed.

"No Eve, the honor is mine. I'm here to offer you a contract with my
record company. I would like you to cut three albums and I'm willing
to pay you a nice tidy sum."

"Contract?" She looked into her lover's eyes as he smiled to her. "You
want ME?" She said stunned that there across from her was a man who
could make her into a world famous Jazz singer. "Three albums? You're
joking. Right?"

Jackson Heartstone leaned forward. "No joke. Three albums over the
next three years. With your amazing voice I can see you hit The Billboard
with a number 1 in less then a week."

"Pinch me! I'm dreaming!"

"It's no dream Eve. I need you to be in Los Angeles next week to begin
cutting your first album."

"Next week?" She looked at Jackson then at her lover. "I...."

"What's wrong Eve?" Her lover asked her.

"Nothing. It's just that next week is my sister's birthday and I wanted
to surprise her."

"Oh, is that all?" He replied coldly. "Look you can send her
something from L.A."

"Eve, this is a chance of a lifetime." Jackson said as he stood from
the booth. "I'll leave you these documents to go over and sign. I really
don't suggest you pass this opportunity up."

The watched Jackson leave but said nothing to each other for several
minutes.

"Eve, what is that you want? Do you want to spend the rest of your
life in these clubs or do you want to make a name for yourself?"

"What about you?!" She hissed back. "What will daddy dearest say about
this? Will you be going with me to L.A.? Or back to Harmony to play
daddy's lapdog?"

"Now that's not fair Eve and you know it! You know perfectly well that
father doesn't approve of us. He'll come around eventually."

"Eventually? When? Tomorrow? Next month? Next year? Ten years from now?
When Julian? When will the great Alistar Crane come around?"

Julian put a hand to his forehead in an attempt to stop the headache
he was getting. The topic of his father was something he hated discussing
with her since he knew she was right.

"I'm going back to the apartment. I'll see you there," he said as he
slid out of the booth. She glared at him as he left.

"Coward. Can't you once stick up for me with your father?" She mumbled
to herself. "What are you going to do when you find out I'm pregnant?
And what is Alistar going to do?"

******** Five days later ********

"What do you mean you're not coming?" She demanded from him.

"I can't go with you to L.A.. At least not this week," he walked over
to the bar and poured himself a drink.

"Julian I NEED you there. I've never been to L.A. before. I need your
support!"

"Eve!" The glass smashed down on the counter as he turned to her. "I
DO support you but I CAN'T go. Father needs me to go to Paris for the
week to finish up some things for him."

"Alistar! Of course. Always Alistar," she said as she pushed the tears
from her cheeks. "He has other people to do his bidding. Why can't you
tell him to get one of his attorneys to do it?"

"Because I'm his son and one day I'll have to take over the family
business."

Eve walked over to the bar and poured herself a glass of brandy. She
needed something to calm her nerves. "How can you do this to me Julian?
You said you would go with me!"

"It's only for a week! I'll be there only a week after you get there,"
he attempted to satisfy her.

"A week?" She said after she drank the liquor in her glass and poured
herself another one. "Your father is going to find a way to keep you
there. I'm sure of it. You know he hates me and will do anything to
keep us apart."

Julian reached out to stop Eve from drinking. He hated to see her in
so much pain but there was little he could do to stop it.

"Don't."

"Don't what?" She asked as she slapped his hand away. "Don't cry? Don't
drink? Don't what Julian? Ask you to stay with me? Don't ask you to
disobey your father?" She glared at him. "Well what do you think daddy
dearest is going to say or do when he finds out that I'm pregnant!"

Julian was stunned. "Pregnant?"

"Yes Julian! PREGNANT! With YOUR child!"

Julian smiled but it quickly turned into a frown. "I...." His face
grew ashen. "Father is going to disown me!"

Eve threw the glass at him when she heard that comment. "Get out! Get
the hell out of my apartment NOW!"

"Eve! I'm sorry!"

"Sorry?! I bet. You're only sorry because you got your black whore
pregnant. Is that what daddy Alistar calls me? Your whore?" She reached
for another glass. "Get out Julian! Now!"

Julian grabbed his coat and looked at her. "I love you Eve. You've got
to believe me."

"Out!" She screamed as she threw the glass at him.

The door slammed shut as he left her in tears. She wiped the tears from
her face and began to drink even more.

An hour passed as Eve continued to drink. She began to stumble around
the room and knock things over. Her vision was blurred as she looked
up at the clock and saw that she was going to be late for her last
gig at the Satin Garter.

A short time later she stumbled down the alley towards the club but was
grabbed by someone.

"Eve!" The voice cried out. "Come home with me!"

"No! Get away!"

"Eve I've been looking for you for so long!" The young girl cried out.

"I said get away from me!" Eve said as she slapped the girl's hands
away.

"I need you Eve! Please come home with me!"

Eve stopped to look at the girl in front of her. "I don't need you! I
don't need anybody!" The girl reeled back. The alcohol on her breath
could be smelled from ten feet away. "Get the hell away from me you
little bitch!" She pushed the girl aside not realizing that she had
just pushed her only sister away from her.

"Eve!" He sister cried out. "Stop! Please!" She watched as her sister
stumbled off into the club. "I need you!"

Eve changed out of her clothes and into a revealing gown of green
satin. The neckline plunged dangerously low and her bosom threatened
to spill out. The back of the gown was just as revealing and cut so
low that another half inch would reveal for bottom to the world. A
slit in the side of the gown reached her thigh leaving little to the
imagination. Normally this was something Eve would never have worn but
that night she was not thinking clearly.

Her sister walked into the club and sat in the back by the bar and was
shocked to see her sister in such a dress. Eve was leaving very little
to the imagination and the men in the club leered at the goddess on
the stage.

"What can I get you doll?" The barkeep asked.

"Uh... just water please."

The man snickered. "One water coming up. Tell me babydoll what are you
doing in this place?"

She looked up at him as he handed her the water. "Looking for my
sister."

"Sister 'eh. And who might that be?" He leaned forward to the girl.

"Eve."

He began to laugh. "Eve? Your sister? That's a good one sugar. Look
drink your water and go home. You're too young to be here."

"My name isn't sugar and it isn't babydoll. My name is Liz so don't
call me anything else!" She hissed at him.

"Well Liz doll. You need to go home. This place isn't for kiddies."

"I'll go when I get Eve to come home with me!"

"Sorry Liz doll but you have to go NOW. Tonight is Eve's last night
here and she's off to L.A.. So I doubt she'll go anywhere with her
'sister.'" He motioned for the club's bouncer to take the girl outside.
"Now scram sister and don't come back until you're old enough to drink,"
he said as he laughed as the bouncer picked up the girl and escored
her out of the club.

Liz stood outside the club and let the tears flow down her face freely.
She lost the most important person in her life that night but refused
to go home.

"L.A. here I come!" Liz said as she went back to the hotel room she
was staying in to pack her bags and take a bus out there. She found
Eve once and she was determined to find her again no matter how long
it took.

Author's notes: Remember before the mid-80s pregnant women didn't know
about the problems drinking while pregnant has on the developing feotus.
As such Eve could have been drinking or doing drugs while pregnant and
never know that drinking or doing drugs would harm her child.

And I'm trying to remember as much of the scene where Liz and Eve remember
the past and that night in the alley but I don't watch Passions all
the time so I'm sure that my scene above is not like the scene shown
on Pasisons but heck this IS a fan fic so of course I can change stuff
around if need be to fit my story. ;)

And yes I know I said in chapter one her family would find out about
her past in this chapter but I thought I better establish her past
first along with Liz's since Liz will be making an appearence soon too
later in the story.
