Prologue

“Everyone Charity! Everyone in this town admitted their lies and sins so my daughter could live. Everyone was willing to give something up but you!” Miguel’s voice yelled. “How could you be so selfish?”

“Miguel, I didn’t know.” Charity whispered her voice lingering as she looked back at the hospital door. “I didn’t know half of Harmony had visited with Death.”

“And that makes it better?” Miguel questioned. “Kay admitted horrible things to save Maria! Dr. Russell admitted to loving Julian Crane for crying out loud. Even David told Grace he wasn’t her husband, and why did they do that Charity? To save my daughter from death!”

“I love you Miguel, I love you so much. I just couldn’t image my life without you.” Charity whimpered. “I tried to give you up once. When Maria was born I really tried.” She whispered shaking as the icy snow fell all around them.

“You should have came to me.” Miguel frowned. “But you didn’t and my daughter almost died. Why she was used as a pawn to have this town admit their faults I don’t know, but I do know that you’re not the person I thought you were.” He huffed.

“Why Miguel? Because I thought about myself for once? For the first time since I came to this town I put my needs before anyone else? That makes me worse than Kay? Kay tried to kill me, Dr.Russell knew secrets about all our family and friends, but you’re yelling at me? I’m worse than them because I didn’t want to loose them?”

“No.” Miguel sighed, “You’re worse than them because you were willing to let my child die.” Tears filled his hazel eyes as he looked at the thin blonde, “Kay hurt me tonight more than I ever thought possible, but you, you I don’t understand. You were willing to let my child, my precious daughter die, just so I could stay with you. That makes you just as bad as Kay, just as bad as the rest of this stupid town.”

Her tears fell down her cheeks like rain as she remembered what had transpired the night before. In one moment, with one word Charity Standish had lost everything she loved. With Maria Lopez-Fitzgerald near death, Death had once again gave her a choice, give up Miguel or let Maria die. When Death asked if she was going to give up Miguel, she spoke only one word.

No.

No, she had said no, but Death didn’t tell her he had visited with others in Harmony. He didn’t tell her that Eve Russell had went to TC and told him about her past so Maria could live. Death didn’t tell her that Theresa gave up any chance of being with Ethan, or that David had told Grace all of his lies. Death forgot to tell her all that Kay had said, or that Antonio agreed to leave town to help save his niece and allow his brother and Sheridan to finally be happy. What Death did do, was stand before half the town and tell them that Charity was the only one that refused to help. Maria, he told them would live, and she would be the Standish with the greatest powers of them all. Charity lost all her powers in one swift move, and Maria gained them all.

“Charity, can I come in?” A voice questioned from the door.

Looking up Charity let out a sigh, “Reese, if this is about Miguel.” She warned.

“I just wanted to check on you.” Reese Durkee smiled. “I won’t mention Miguel at all.”

“I’m surprised you don’t hate me too.” She frowned when he shut the door behind him. “Even Jess told me she hated me.”

“Jess hates everyone but me and her dad right now.” Reese frowned. “Give her time.”

“No.” Charity sighed. “She won’t come around Reese, and why should she?”

“She loves you.”

“I was going to let her niece die, she loves her niece more.” Charity explained sitting down on the bed. “I’ve lost my whole family Reese, everyone I love hates me. Miguel will never look at me again.”

“Oh Charity, if you give him time to get over things.” Reese suggested watching as Charity wiped tears from her sad face.

“Reese he said he would never forgive me. He told me he could never love someone as selfish as me. As sick as it is, right now he’d rather look at Kay than me.”

Reese shoved his hands in his pockets, “Yeah about Kay.” He sighed. “There’s something you should know.”

“What? Are they bringing her up on charges for trying to kill me?” Charity asked.

“Actually, Tabitha told them that a witch named Hecuba put a spell on Kay to make her do everything she did. Kay denied it and said she did everything on her own, but her dad and Miguel are starting to believe Tabitha over Kay.”

“You have got to be kidding me!” Charity shrieked. “Kay is getting away with what she did?”

“I didn’t say that.” Reese spoke quickly pushing his glasses up, “Jess doesn’t believe her, and Mrs. Bennett says she’s evil.”

“She is evil! She’s evil and deserves to pay.” Charity fumed. “But she won’t will she? She won’t because Tabitha is taking up for her.”

“Charity, I believe that this Hecuba could have used Kay. I’m not sure about some sort of spell, but I do believe evil was driving Kay’s insecurities.”

“Get out!” Charity screamed. “Get out of my room Reese! I can’t believe everyone believes this nonsense. Kay wanted me dead and no one cares.”

“Charity I care! I can’t believe the things Kay did. Its so much to comprehend.”

Charity’s eyes softened. “But you are going to forgive her aren’t you?”

Reese shrugged his shoulders, “It’s you and Miguel she hurt the most, not me. I’m shocked at what she did, but I don’t believe in letting anger absorb who I am. “

“Yeah I used to believe that way to.” Charity frowned. “I was a fool though.”

“Charity, that’s not true.” Reese spoke shaking his head. “You have never been a fool.”

“Thanks Reese.” She nodded, “I’m really tired now, if you don’t mind I really want to rest.”

“Of course.’ Reese answered quickly. “I’ll close the door behind me.”

“I’m sorry for yelling at you before Reese.” Charity called before Reese shut the door.

“I know.” Reese smiled as he slowly closed the door behind him.

Kay Bennett watched as Miguel looked at Maria’s crib. Their daughter was still in the hospital and Kay wanted to get back to her as soon as possible. Miguel picked up his daughter’s blanket and took in her scent.

“Are you going to take her from me?” Kay questioned her voice shaking as Miguel’s eyes made contact with hers. She had never been so weak, so vulnerable in her life. All her lies had come to the surface and she would now have to pay for them. The night before she had received slaps in the face by both her mother and her sister. Her father had hung his head and walked out without a word. Miguel had yelled, but before he could let all his feelings out, he learned of Charity’s selfish act. Now she knew she could loose her daughter if Miguel decided he wanted to take her. For the first time in her life, Kay didn’t care about herself, she only cared about Maria, and what was best for her. “Please don’t.” She whispered. “Please.”

“I should.” He spoke bitterly. “I should make sure you never see her again for the things you have done.”

“She’s my life.” Kay whispered sitting down in the wooden rocker that Tabitha had bought for the two to share. “I love her more than I ever thought I could love another human.”

“Are you sure your capable of love Kay?” Miguel spoke crossing his arms. “You’re not the person I grew up with. She would have never done the things you did.”

“You’re taking her from me aren’t you?” Kay questioned again. “You’re going to take Maria.”

Miguel’s hazel eyes left her and looked back at Maria’s crib. “I won’t do that.” He spoke his voice deep. “I could never do that.”

“But I thought that, I just figured you’d, I can’t believe this.” Kay spoke her words going together as she cried tears of joy.

“Don’t get too happy Kay. I still can’t believe you did all that horrible stuff. I want to believe Tabitha when she says you were under a spell, but you keep saying she’s lying. Why would you do that?” His voice went from angry to sad. He was too upset to even be angry in that moment. He was sure that the anger would come back, but looking at the girl he had thought of as his best friend, he wanted to cry instead of scream.

“Because it’s true.” Kay sighed. “I did all those terrible things knowing what I was doing. Was Hecuba there? Yes Miguel she was, but there was no spell. It was all me, all evil horrible Kay.” She whispered.

“I’d rather believe Tabitha.” Miguel admitted. “I need to believe Tabitha, because right now the thought of my best friend, the mother of my child doing such evil things on her own, it truly makes me sick.” He swallowed. “If Tabitha is telling the truth, if you were put under a spell, that would change things.”

“Why? So you won’t hate me?” Kay questioned. “I tricked you into sleeping with me. I brought that Zombie to town and froze Charity, tell me Miguel why shouldn’t you hate me?”

“Because Kay, I care way to much about you to hate you.” He frowned. “You’re the mother of my child, and it doesn’t matter how she got here, I wouldn’t give her up for anything. I don’t regret Maria, and I need a reason not to regret our friendship.”

Kay shook her head, “I have no reason.” She answered honestly. “Everything I told you was true last night. I did terrible things out of greed and selfishness. There’s nothing I can say to change anything I’ve done. The only thing I can say it that my daughter is worth everything to me. I don’t regret her either Miguel, and I never will.”

“I just can’t believe that you would do those things. Tabitha said you don’t believe in the spell, but she saw that witch put it on you. Isn’t it possible that you were under a spell and didn’t even know it?” Miguel asked his voice almost begging.

“I really don’t care what you believe Miguel.” Kay finally spoke. “I need to get to the hospital to see our daughter. Right now she’s the only person I am worried about.”

“Kay.” Miguel spoke as Kay was almost out the door. She stopped in her tracks and turned her head to look at him. “I used to wish it would be you.” He went on shoving his hands in his pockets. “When I was younger I mean, I used to wish you’d be my first. I just never thought it’d be like that. You tricking me, me thinking you were Charity, in a way we were all robbed.” He sighed.

“I’m sorry I robbed you Miguel.” Kay spoke her blue eyes staring at him.

“You robbed yourself too Kay, from sharing that moment with someone who knew who you were.” He answered back glaring at her. “Have you ever thought about that?”

“Everyday Miguel, every single day.” With those words she turned and walked out of the house leaving Miguel alone with his thoughts.

”TC its time you knew the truth.” Eve Russell whispered pulling her husband to the side. The hospital was busy with people, but she had no time to loose. With a frown she saw the worry in T.C’s eyes.

“Eve I know what you’re about to say.” TC smiled.

“No, no you don’t and before you guess please just let me talk.” Eve spoke quickly.

“But Eve I know what truth your talking about.” TC tried again with a smile.

“No TC, you don’t know the truth, but I have to tell you. You have to know about my past. You need to know about the person I was before I met you.”

“Eve you were a wonderful person.”

“I was in love with Julian Crane.” She spoke bluntly. “And we had a child together, a son that died.”

“You WHAT?” TC yelled. “What did you just say Eve? What did you just say?”

Tears fell down Eve’s face, “Before I met you TC, before I knew you, I was in love with Julian. We were going to be together, raise our son together.” She cried, “But his father, oh TC I’m so sorry.” She whispered. “I was a singer, and I met Julian and was in a lifestyle nothing like what I lead you to believe.” She whimpered.

“You were with Julian Crane? You slept with that man? You loved him?” TC yelled. “How could you Eve? How could my wonderful wife love a man so dirty?”

“Mom? Did dad just say you loved Julian Crane?” Whitney spoke running over to where her mother stood. “Mom?”

“Yes, yes I did.” Eve cried. “I love my family though Whitney, you and Simone, I love you so much.”

“I’ll kill that man! I’ll kill Julian Crane forever touching you! He drugged you didn’t he? Or worse he forced himself on you! Tell me Eve what did he do to you?”

“He loved me.” Eve cried dropping her head. “He loved me and our son.”

“No Eve. That filthy man isn’t capable of love!”

“TC please.”

“How could you do this? Keep this from me all these years. You and Crane? The man I hate most in this world? I can’t even look at you right now Eve!”

“I love you TC.” Eve spoke. “You and my girls.”

Whitney glared at her mother, “I thought you were perfect, I wanted to be just like you.” Shaking her head she took a few steps backward. “Now I don’t even know you.” Turning she quickly ran away.

“Whitney no!” Eve yelled tears streaming down her face.

“Don’t you dare go after her, not after what you’ve done.” TC screamed. “Do you still love him Eve? Do you still have it bad for Crane?” He asked. “Have you been playing me this whole time?”

“No TC, I have never played you.” Eve whispered. “My sister has though, my sister Liz.” She spoke. “She’s been trying to take you away from me. She’s been holding my past over my head.”

“Liz is your sister?” TC questioned. “No.”

“Yes TC.” Eve nodded.

“I can’t believe this.” He whispered. “I just can’t.”

“TC please.”

“Have you been with Crane since we married Eve?” TC suddenly asked. “Do you still have feelings for that man?”

“I, I don’t know what to say.” Eve whispered. “I have never slept another man since I married you TC. I promise you that.”

“No!” TC yelled suddenly. “You still love him.”

“TC, you’re my husband. I love you.”

“I can’t do this.” He spoke moving away from Eve. “I can’t be near you right now.”

“Do you regret it?” A soft voice questioned behind Eve Russell. “Do you regret what you did last night?”

“Theresa, are you ok?” Eve spoke turning to see the pale woman standing behind her. Her eyes were red, with dark circles lingering underneath them. Her usual perfectly made up face, was without makeup and her hair looked uncombed.

“I gave him up Dr. Russell, I told Ethan that he should leave with Gwen and never look back. I’ll never have him, never again.” She whispered.

“I lost TC, and my daughters won’t speak to me.” Eve frowned. “But I couldn’t watch another mother loose her child. I know that ache and I couldn’t let Kay feel that pain.”

“My niece how is she?” Theresa asked.

“Much better.” Eve spoke. “We did the right thing Theresa, in the end Maria’s life was more important than my lies.”

“Why did we have to give something up?” Theresa asked crossing her arms. “Why not just Kay?”

“Sometimes things don’t work like we think they should.” Eve frowned. “I’ve spent the whole night crying my eyes out. I listened to my husband call me so many names, and then I got up came to work and saw Kay at her daughter’s side and knew that baby was worth it. It was time for the truth to come out anyway. It was past time.” Eve frowned. “Now I just have to deal with the fall out.”

Theresa nodded her head, “I never thought about a life without Ethan. I never imagined not being with him.”

Eve frowned, “I know honey, but there is one good thing that came out of this for you. Something you don’t even know about.”

“What?” Theresa asked her eyes becoming wide.

“Your son Theresa.” Eve spoke with a smile. “Julian told me he will now be able to free himself from Rebecca, and because of that he is going to let you have your son back. Rebecca was blackmailing him Theresa, and because everyone knows about my past and my present feelings for Julian, he’s free of her.”

“I get my son back?” Theresa shrieked. “Are you sure he’s going to do that?”

“Very sure.” Eve smiled. “Julian isn’t evil, I know that is hard to believe but it’s true.”

“Oh my gosh, this is the greatest news ever.” Theresa smiled her eyes filling up with tears. “I get my baby back? I get to hold him and hug him? I can tuck him in again?” She questioned.

“Would you like me to place a call to Julian? Just so you know this for a face?” Eve asked.

“Would you?” Theresa asked the smile not leaving her face. “I want my son back, more than anything in the world I want my son.”

“I’ll phone Julian now.” Eve nodded patting the girl on the shoulder. “It’s not like I have anything to hide now.”

“Dr. Russell.” Theresa spoke. “Just so you know, I don’t see you any different now than I did before. Your past, it doesn’t matter to me. I still respect you the same as I always did.”

Eve smiled, “Thank you Theresa, that means more to me than you know dear.”

Noah Bennett opened the door to the Bed and Breakfast his mother owned and slipped inside wiping snow off his new jacket.

“Mom?” He called out. “Jess?”

“They’re not here.” A male voice spoke from the counter. “Just me.”

“And you’d be?” Noah asked looking at the young man with curly brown locks of hair.

“John.”

“John? You’re John?” Noah questioned. “I’m Noah.”

John’s expression didn’t change, “That would have meant something to me last night.” He shrugged. “Of course last night I had a family.”

“Man, I’m sorry about that.” Noah frowned. “Dad called last night and filled me in on everything. That’s why I’m here, because of my family.”

“Your family.” John sighed. “Right.”

Noah ignored John’s glare and looked around, “Do you know where my mother is? Kay? Jess? Anyone?” He asked. “Dad wasn’t home, and I really wanted to see someone in my family today.”

“I’m guessing Kay is at the hospital with Maria.” John shrugged. “Jessica ran out last night so I have no idea where she is, and Mom, I mean Grace, she left early this morning, don’t know where she went.” John spoke. “Not that it should matter to me anyway, there not my family anymore.”

Noah shook his head, “If my mother loved you yesterday, she loves you today.” He spoke looking at the confused man. “I’m sure her feelings didn’t change over night.”

“Of course they didn’t.” Grace’s voice spoke from the door.

Noah turned around and smiled when he saw his mother’s small form. “Mom.”

“Noah, son what are you doing home?” She asked giving him a warm hug.

“Dad called, he told me about everything going on, and I wanted to be here.” Noah smiled. “I wanted to see my niece, and make sure you were ok.”

“Well, you should be at school.” Grace spoke crossing her arms. “Everything is fine here.” Looking over at John she frowned, “And you young man, I love you every bit as much today as I ever have. You are still my son, blood or no blood do you understand.”

“Are you sure?” John questioned as Grace walked over to him. “Because what dad did to you was horrible.”

“That was your father, not you.” Grace spoke. “You were a victim in this.”

Noah watched as Grace and John hugged, it was almost as if he wasn’t in the room as Grace began to talk to John and the other man laughed at what she said. Things in the Bennett family had changed, and Noah knew he had to help put it back together. His parents belonged together, and his sister’s deserved to have their mother back. Without a word he slowly slipped out the door, his heart full of questions as the snow and wind hit him once more.
