Turn on the Light

Julian Crane opened his eyes and awoke from his deep sleep. Staring up at the ceiling he moved in his bed, realizing Ivy had already gotten up. Taking a deep breath he realized his life was starting a new phase, full of truth, and as good as that seemed, fear still crept into him. Shaking his head he moved slowly from the bed, sitting on the edge as he let his mind fill with matters of the day. He had to take care of the problem known as ‘Carrie’ and end the worries of his little grandchild.
"I see you finally decided to get out of bed." Ivy joked. "Well almost out of bed anyway." She said sitting down beside him.
Kissing his wife on the lips he smiled, "Have I missed anything yet?"
Ivy laughed, "Its still very early Julian, but your son did call."
"Which one? The good one? The dumb one? Or the one that hates me."
Ivy took his hand, "Do you know how much it means to me to hear you call Ethan your son? He will come around Julian." She smiled, "But Chad was the one that called, I’m actually not sure where Jonah is right now."
"What did Chad want? Is everything okay?" He asked concern filling his voice.
"Chad is just fine, he simply wanted to know how is father was." She smiled then laughed, "I could hear Justin on the other end begging him to buy him a car for his birthday."
"Birthday? He’ll be what seventeen?" Julian questioned.
Ivy shook her head, "No, sixteen actually. Sixteen this month." She smiled, "He’s such a nice looking young man isn’t he?" She asked standing up.
"Yes." Julian said. "Are you sure he’ll be sixteen?" He asked again.
Ivy nodded her head, "Of course, I asked Chad myself. He said he’d be sixteen at the end of the month." Walking toward the door she smiled. "You coming down soon?"
Julian looked at his wife his face flushed, "Yes dear." He answered though his mind was everywhere but the large room where he sat. "It can’t be." He swallowed falling back on the bed.

Theresa smiled as she looked at the huge breakfast she had prepared. "Sleep does a body good." She laughed to herself walking over to get two more plates for her table. For the first time since ‘it’ happened she was able to sleep in her bed alone. Jada had spent the night and Kendra actually slept in her own room, Jada in the bed right beside her of course. As Theresa waited for the house to become noisy again, she sat down, sipping a hot coffee she was able relax. Sure, to most people seven hours of sleep wasn’t much at all, but for her it was heaven. She was becoming used to those four hour nights, and the three extra hours had suddenly made her feel so much more alive.
"Resa!" A voice called from her living room, bringing her to her feet was a cheerful smile on her face.
"In the kitchen." She called back, as Chad and Justin walked in their eyes looking over all the food she had prepared.
"Wow! Look at this!" Chad smiled wrapping his arm around her as he kissed her cheek. "Food for an army?" He grinned picking up a glass of orange juice.
She shook her head, "No just two growing girls, and two hungry men." She joked.
"Man, she’s cooked everything." Justin said taking a bite of a piece of bacon. "And none of its burnt." He said looking over at Chad. "Can we marry her?" He grinned.
"Jut!" Chad yelled at his brother almost choking through a mouth full of orange juice.
The teenager simply shrugged. "Dude, it was a joke." He said looking over at Theresa, "But it is nice to have a meal that does look like charcoal."
Theresa laughed, "You mean Chad can’t cook?"
Chad sighed, "I can cook." He defended. "I just have a problem knowing when stuff is actually done."
"Right" Justin said with a eye roll. "He cooks on high, I’m telling you, the man needs lessons."
"Forgive my brother." Chad said giving Justin a look that forced him to stop talking. "He’s just mad at me because I refuse to buy him a brand new car from his birthday."
"But Chad, every boy needs a car." Theresa smiled.
"Not a new one!" Chad said looking over at Justin, "I don’t want my brother getting some new sports car only to wreck the thing in a few weeks!"
"I’ll drive slow." Justin pleaded.
Chad let out a chuckle. "Yeah, sure you will"
"Daddy!" A tiny voice yelled as Jada and Kendra ran into the kitchen, Jada raising her arms high for Chad to pick her up.
"Hey baby girl, did you miss daddy last night?" Chad said lifting the little girl into his arms kissing her cheek.
"Uh huh but I had lots of fun." She giggled. "We played in Resa’s makeup and I got to hold Matt!" Jada giggled.
"Did you now?" Chad asked.
"Then we made homemade pizza and I got to pick what I wanted on mine." She smiled.
"Sounds like you had a blast." Chad laughed.
"We sure did." Theresa said looking over at Kendra, "We’ve got to do it again sometime right Kenji?"
"Yelp!" Kendra agreed then looked at the food on the table. "Who’s gonna eat all this food?" she asked.
"We are." Theresa said.
"You made my pancakes?" Kendra asked looking over at the chocolate chip pancakes placed on the table.
"I sure did, and Jada I made blueberry pancakes for you, just like you asked."
"Cool!" Jada said then looked at Chad and frowned, "You didn’t help Resa cook did you?"
Justin let out a round of laughter as his brother shook his head. "No baby girl."
"Good, cause your food is all yucky."
"Told ya so!" Justin grinned as Chad smacked the back of his brother’s head playfully.
"Well I’ll go get Matt and we can eat." Theresa smiled.
"Its about time." Justin said grabbing a plate. "I’m starving!"
As Theresa walked out of the room she looked back at the people in her kitchen. It all felt right to her, suddenly watching everyone fix their plates she couldn’t help but smile. "We are going to make it." She said looking up. "I finally believe will be okay."
~*~*~*~*~

Gwen stared over at her mother as she sipped her coffee. "Mother, Martin is back isn’t that wonderful."
"Yes dear its just great!" Rebecca grunted. "Another one of ‘those’ people to deal with."
Gwen rolled her eyes, "Mother! Can’t you be happy for anyone?"
Rebecca smiled, "Of course dear." She said looking around the Country Club. "In fact Sandy told me that her daughter is marrying that wonderful lawyer I tried to fix you up with. What’s his name? Walter?"
"Walker his name is Walker, and Missy can have him, they’re both total airheads anyway!" Gwen sighed.
"Gwen! How dare you speak that way! Missy was once a good friend of yours."
"Mother, when she found out about my breakup with Ethan she asked if I cared of she went after him, she actually told me it was my fault he dumped me for Theresa. Besides when she found out that I had started dating Miguel she told everyone I was dating a bag boy from the local high school!"
"Well dear, you must admit Mitchell is quite younger than you, and he doesn’t fit in with out type of people!"
"Miguel! His name is Miguel!" Gwen yelled across the table. "And I don’t care where he comes from! Don’t you get it mother? I could care less about his class!"
Rebecca gasp. "Gwen do not raise your voice with me! That boy isn’t good enough for you! What you see in that boy is beyond me! He can never you give the life you are used to! He’s so, so, poor!" Rebecca complained.
Gwen stood up from the table "Why can’t I have a mother that loves me regardless? Is that so hard for you to do? I came here today hoping I could find the kind of love from you, Pilar shows her children, or Chad gives his little girl. I was hoping maybe you could change like Julian did!" Shaking her head as tears fell she stared her mother in the eyes. "I can see now that, that will never happen! You will always be a stuck up snob that cares more about money than anything else!" Gwen said turning from her mother.
"Gwen where are you going?" Rebecca called out.
Turning back once more Gwen looked at her mother. "I am going to find Miguel and tell him how lucky he his to have a Real family." With that Gwen turned her back and stormed off.
