Sacrifices of the Soul, Chapter 69

Chad was in his office at the radio station when he heard a knock on the door. He looked to see Sheridan.

“ Hey  Sheridan.”

” Hi Chad. You need anything?”

” Actually, unpacking is going great. I’ve made up a list of things that I need so far.”

” Well, all you have to do is give it to Maggie. She’s our new secretary. It was my first executive decision!”, Sheridan said excitedly.

” I met her. She seems nice.”

” Chad, how are you?”

” Do you mean in general or do you have something specific in mind?”

” I know your mother’s back in Harmony.”

” Hmmm…he talks to you about her?”

“ Not much. Even though Julian and I have gotten closer than we’ve ever been in our lives, fundamentally, he’s a private person. He learned that lesson from Alistair, sadly. Never let anyone see you vulnerable.”

” They’ll use it against you down the line.”

” He’s talked to you about Alistair?”

“ No. That’s the law of the streets. It’s how you survive.”

” Oh.”

“ I’m worried about my mother.”

“ Why?”

“ Her Medical Board Review is coming up, and I’m afraid her license will be taken away from her.”

” I doubt that will happen.”

” Why?”

” Even though Julian doesn’t want me to know, I’ve heard things.”

” Things?”

” Lunches and Dinners that Julian’s had with the members of the Medical Review Board. I think he’s taken care of things.”

” Is it really that simple, Sheridan? He’s Julian Crane and he wants it to happen, so it’s going to happen?”

“ In all honesty, Chad? It does get that simple. “

“ Well, I went to see Mrs. Bennett.”

” Chad, you’re being a good son. I’m sure Eve will love your support.”

” I’m new at this son thing.”

” You’re doing a great job.”, Sheridan laughs. “ Wanna have a nice lunch on the expense account?”

” Hmm….sounds good. Do I call you Auntie?”

” Sheridan is just fine.”

Chad chuckled. “ Gotcha!”

Sheridan punched him lightly in the arm. “ Ugh! Come on.”

“Hakim?”, Simone asked, as she entered the apartment. She went in and stopped when she saw someone.

” Who the fuck are you?”

“ Hakim’s girlfriend.”

” His woman?” The guy looked Simone up and down. She didn’t like how he was looking at her and began backing up towards the door. Simone couldn’t get to the door fast enough. The guy had his hand on the door, preventing her from leaving.

” Now, why you gonna do that, baby? We can get to know one another.”

“ I don’t need to get to know you. I have enough friends.”

“ You awfully young. Are you even legal?”, he said, laughing.

“ I have to go.”, Simone said, her voice quivering.

” It’s alright, baby. Just tell Hakim that Rocky stopped by.” The guy opened the door and left.

Simone slid down the floor, shaking.

Grace was baking in her kitchen when she heard a knock on the door.

“ Come in.”

“ Hi, Mrs. Bennett.”

“ Whitney! Come in. Would you like a muffin?”

” Sure.”

Grace served up a muffin for Whitney and herself, along with some tea.

“ It’s been awhile.”

“ I know. I really appreciate all that you and Chief Bennett have done for my father. Things have been hard for him, since, well..”

“ It’s no problem. We both love TC so much. We had to help him get through this bad situation.”

” Well, I don’t know if you know it or not, but SHE is back in town.”

” Oh.”

” She just waltzes back into town after MONTHS and everything is supposed to be ok. She should have stayed gone FOREVER!”

“ Whitney, Honey, you should calm down.”

” How can I calm down? The woman ruins my life, Daddy’s life, Simone’s life, and she doesn’t even have the sense to stay away? She has to pay for what she’s done. That’s why I’m here.”

” I don’t understand.”

” Well, I know that the Medical Review Board will be meeting soon to discuss her license. I know that your testimony will be very important at that meeting. I’m here to make sure that you do the right thing.”

” Which is?”

” Bury her, of course. Make sure that she never practices medicine another day.”
