Sacrifices of the Soul, Chapter 89

Chad walked into the doctor’s office with Eve. TC and the doctor were still there.

” What’s HE doing here?”, TC barked.

” He’s here because he’s Simone’s brother, and has an idea.”

” My mother told me what you planned for Simone. But, she’s not down for Simone to be in a Sanitarium like that. So, I’ve come up with a plan. Harmony Hospital has just built a new state of the art wing for plastic surgery patients. It’s a big deal. A lot of these rich women want a place out of the way where they can have their surgery and recuperate away from their society friends. They lured a handful of the best surgeons in the country, and with this new clinic, it’s a win-win. “

” Simone’s not a plastic surgery patient, in case you didn’t notice.”, TC commented sarcastically.

” I know that. But, she could be put in one of those rooms, with a round the clock nurse. Her doctors could come and see her whenever they wanted, and so could her family. The gardens are fabulous and contained, for privacy. Plus, she’d be much closer to home there than in Oak Haven. Simone’s not a danger to herself, is she? She just needs a quiet place to recover, right?”

” Mr. Harris is correct. Simone needs the quiet above all else. If things check out, there’s no reason..”

” This place is very expensive, isn’t it? I know my insurance will cover Oak Haven, but this..”, TC commented.

” You don’t need to worry. I’ll pay for my sister’s care there.”

” I’m NOT letting any damn Crane pay for anything.”

” TC, shut up! If Chad wants to help Simone, then he’ll do it. SIMONE is what matters here. NOT your hatred of the Cranes. Do you hate the Cranes MORE than you LOVE your daughter?”, Eve accused.

” Of course not.”

” Then be happy that Chad found a solution that will keep Simone close to home.” Eve looked at TC.

” Fine. Harmony Hospital’s new wing it is.”

” Good. I’ll call and see if it all checks out. If it does, there’s no reason why you can’t take Simone back to Harmony tomorrow.”

Whitney came in with a teddy bear. She put it under the cover next to Simone.

” You always loved teddy bears. I think it’s because of your nickname. I’m glad HE’S gone. I can’t stand him being near you. Like he cares. Like he has a right to care. Like he has a right to be here with you. The only ones who really love you are Daddy and me. WE love you, Simone. WE want what’s best for you. Not that bitch called our mother or her bastard. And, you don’t worry. Daddy and I will take care of you. Daddy and I will love you. I promise you.” Whitney took the brush and began stroking Simone’s hair.

” What happened, Simone? What put you here? Why won’t you talk to us? What could have been so horrible that you wouldn’t want to talk about it? I won’t tell anyone. I promise. Not even Daddy. Remember when we were little, and we used to keep each other’s secrets? All the nights we’d camp out in one another’s rooms, pretending to be sleep when SHE and Daddy would come by to check on us? Remember? The nights we snuck down to the kitchen and ate cereal by moonlight? Or the times we’d sit out back, looking up at the stars? I love you, Simone.”

” She needs to hear that.”

Whitney turned around. “ I didn’t know you were there.”

“ Obviously. It was good to hear you remind Simone of those times, Whitney. I miss..”

” What do you miss, EVE….our times as a family? Like any of those were real.”

“ They were REAL. And, I’m your mother. Don’t call me by my first name. I won’t tolerate such disrespect.”

“ That’s all you DO deserve is DIS-respect. Who do you think you are, coming in here, swooping down, playing the role of the concerned mother.”

” It’s no role. It’s who I am. I love ALL my children.”

” Including your bastard?”

Eve slapped Whitney, who looked  like she was in shock. “ I told you. I’ve had it with your disrespect.”

” And, I told you, I’ve had it with you. Period. You are NOT my mother. I’m an adult.”

” Then act like it!”

” I will. You put a hand on me again, and I’ll have you arrested for assault. How’s that for being adult. Don’t talk to me, lady. Don’t speak to me. I don’t want to hear anything from you. You aren’t my mother. You aren’t anything to me. You have NO place in my life. Understand?”

“ I understand.”, Eve replied sadly.

” Good. I’m going to check on my father.”

Charity and Miguel were watching a movie and snuggling when Kay burst into the room.

“ Miguel! Miguel! You have to help me!”

” Kay, what’s wrong?”

” Nothing’s wrong. Everything’s right. Simone’s coming home! Simone’s coming home!” Kay pulled Miguel into a hug.

Miguel smiled. “ No wonder you’re happy. “

” I’m so psyched. We need to talk.”

” Talk? About what?”

” About the meal we’re going to fix for Simone.”

” Kay, you sort of interrupted Miguel and I.”, Charity whined.

” Charity, you were watching a movie. My best friend, whose been missing for how long, is finally coming home. I can’t do much for her, but I can do THIS for her. Won’t you help me, Miguel?”

Miguel smiled. “ Sure, Kay. We can go into the kitchen and talk about what we’re going to fix.”

Kay smiled. “ Ok. I’ll get our cookbooks out.”

Once Kay was gone, Miguel turned to Charity. “ She’s right, Charity. And, you know how much she’s been worried about Simone. I have to help her. You don’t mind, do you?”

Charity plastered on a fake smile and lied. “ Of course not.” Miguel left for the kitchen, and Charity fumed.

Even though Chad had offered to take Eve to a Broadway show, she declined. She had wanted to take a long walk, and by now, had been walking an hour. Her stomach rumbled, and she thought herself fortunate to be in front of what seemed to be a popular Italian restaurant. She walked into the crowded restaurant, and up to the hostess.

” One, M’am?”

” Yes, one. “

“ It’ll be about a twenty or thirty minute wait.”

” That’s ok.”

“ Name?”

” Eve.”

“ Ok.”

She took her name down, and then called the next person on her list.

” T.C.? T. C.?”

Eve shook her head. “ It couldn’t be.” She had made the decision to leave the restaurant in case it was true, but it was too late.

” Eve?”

” T.C.”

” You want to share my table?” Eve hesitated. “ Eve. Come on. We were married 20 years. We can share a meal together.”

” Ok.”
