Chapter nineteen

Now that Eve was done with her shower and wearing her nightgown, she wanted nothing more then to get some rest and forget about today. She took off the ace bandage that was around her right wrist earlier before she got into the shower and was going to put back on after she got out, but now she was just too tired to rewrap it so she kept it off. The bandage that she had on the right side of her face was off too. Walking over to the side of her bed, she pulled back the covers and was about to lie down when her cell phone rang. “Ugh… This is ridiculous!” She sighed as a frown appeared on her face.

“Dr. Russell.” She answered.

“Eve it’s me.

"Julian?"

"I need to you right away.”

“Alright, where are you?” Eve asked.

“I’m on the estate. I’m in the cottage a few yards from Sheridan’s to the left.”

“Got it. I’ll be right there.” Eve said as she hung up her phone, and then went over to the closet to get some thing to wear.

Five minutes later, dressed in a white t-shirt, gray jogging pants and white tennis shoes, Eve exited the mansion and took off towards Sheridan’s cottage. When got to the front of Sheridan’s cottage, she looked to the left and in the distance saw the cottage that Julian was talking about. Running all the way over to the cottage, she had just stopped in front of it when Julian appeared in front of her.

“Eve.” Julian said then walked up to her and pulled her close. Eve wrapped her arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder.

“I got here as fast as I could. What’s going on?” she said.

“You won’t believe what happened…” Julian said then pulled back from her a bit to look at her face. “He’s here.”

“Who’s here?” she asked.

“Our son.”

It was a little pass midnight and all of the lights in the Crane mansion were out, except for the one in the living room. Alistair was sitting down behind the desk, with a glass of brandy in his right hand and his left hand covering his face. This was not supposed to happen, he had everything perfectly set up, but things backfired. A few hours ago, his boss called and told him that his end was near. It was then that Alistair realized that his boss knew about his plan and began to panic. Picking up his drink, he drank it all, then threw the glass hard against the fireplace. Getting up from behind the desk, he had just gone to pour himself another drink when he stopped and turned towards the door.

“Liz. He sent you huh?” Alistair smirked.

Liz nodded.

“What happened to your face?” he asked then held his hand up before she could answer. “Let me guess, Eve whooped your ass… Am I right?”

“Kiss my ass Alistair! You know what this is all about, so let’s get this over with.”

Eve backed away from Julian a little and placed her hand over her mouth. She couldn’t have heard him right… ‘Did he just say that our son was here?’ She thought as a few tears fell from her eyes as she watched Julian carefully.

“Are you sure?”

Julian nodded.

“Come on, take my hand Eve.” Julian said holding his hand out to her. She slowly took hold of his hand as he led her into the cottage. The walk was a short one as he stopped her in front of a closed door. Julian squeezed her hand a little then pulled her close to him once more.

“Eve, I know that this is going to be a shock, I was shocked but I want you to know that he is our son.” He said then kissed her softly on the lips. He then opened the door and escorted her in.

Eve walked into the room and the moment her eyes came into contact with the person lying on the bed asleep, her breath hitched in her throat. She blinked her eyes a few times to make sure that she wasn’t dreaming before walking over to the side of the bed. She sat down in a chair next to the bed, then looked back at Julian who was smiling at her.

“Devin… is our son?” Eve asked, still not believing this was real as she rubbed his hair back from his face.

“I found him earlier today outside of the gate. He was bleeding and looked tired. I brought him here and he told me everything Eve…everything.”

“I don’t understand.”

“It appears that Duke Marshall was my older brother and father promised him he’d acknowledge him as his son only if he took Devin from you. He used my brother's love for him against him and look what happened.”

“The man that Devin thought was his real father only to find out recently that he was his uncle, was your brother Julian?”

Julian nodded.

“Alistair hurt him just like he hurt us and it cost him his life. That man took our son because he thought that Alistair would accept him.” Eve shook her head. “That man beat Devin because he asked about his mother. He beat him until he was eighteen!”

“What?! Devin was beaten?!” Julian shouted in absolute shocked.

“Yeah, by your brother. Alistair is going to pay dearly.” She said then looked down at Devin’s face and noticed that he was grimacing.

“He will, I’ll make sure he does.” Julian said then noticed the way that Eve was looking at Devin. “Eve, what’s wrong?”

“He’s burning up!” Eve said as she moved her hands down to his shoulder to see why it was bandaged the way it was. “Oh my god he was shot?! Who did this?!”

“He told me what really happened in his apartment. Someone shot and killed Pierce, then shot him too. I did what could to stop the bleeding.”

“We have to get him to the hospital now!”

“He’s wanted by the police Eve. They’ll take him if they see him there.” Julian said.

“Well then help me get him back to the mansion, so I can look at him more closely. I’m not about to lose my son.” Eve spoke with determination in her voice.

Alistair waited for Liz to make her move, but all she did was stand in the same spot and not move.

“I’m waiting Liz. Really, you shouldn’t wait that long to kill someone you know?”

“You’re right Alistair, delaying the inevitable is just a waste of time.” Liz said then moved a little closer to him before pulling out the gun that was her jacket pocket and pointing it at him.

“You’re going to shoot me? He really wants me dead that bad doesn’t he?” Alistair said.

“You messed and now we're both screwed! Why couldn’t you just let Eve raise her son?”

“Because I wanted to make sure that your sister and her son didn’t have any ties to my son period. And I’d do it again if I had to.”

“Taking him from her only made things worse! You should’ve known that he find out what we did.”

“Everything was the going the way I wanted it to, up until Eve found that her son was really alive. Julian never knew he had a child with her until she told him. Duke was to make sure that Devin never came to Harmony until the time came, but he did and then Devin ran into Eve. I was going to use them to settle my debt!”

“Well Duke messed things up for us! And then my stupid brother made it worse too. He just couldn’t leave her alone. He caused her to have that accident that put her in a coma and after she woke up, he tried to force himself on her again!”

“I was so close to settling things. I would’ve been debt free and he could’ve had Eve and Devin. Everything would’ve been just fine.” Alistair said more to himself.

“Well it’s not and now you have to pay for it.” Liz said then pointed her gun at his leg and fired.

“Sh*t! You really shot me!”

“I know. I really didn’t want to but you left me no choice.” Liz fired again this time hitting him in the chest. She was about to fire a third time but stopped when she turned her head to the left and saw Eve and Julian helping a wounded Devin through the door.

“Oh my god!” Julian shrieked as he saw blood all over the living room floor.

“This just got worse.” Liz shook her head then turned the gun on three of them.

“What are you doing here?!” Julian shouted.

“I came here to kill Alistair, you see?” She said then pointed to a bleeding Alistair, who was holding on to his chest by the fireplace.

“I know everything. I know you’re involved with what happened to my son and Eve. How could you help keep your nephew’s whereabouts away from your own sister?!” Julian yelled.

“It was easy.” Liz smirked.

“You bitch!” Eve shouted at her.

“Eve, don’t make me shoot you.” Liz said then pointed the gun at her.

“Why?” Eve simply asked.

“You see, I met this man while coming to see you one day at the Blue Note. He knew all about you, he especially knew mom really well.” Liz said, as she looked Eve right in the eyes. “You see, mom was involved in the same syndicate that I’m apart of now, doing all kinds of things that you wouldn’t believe. Murder, robbery… she did it all. She was also sleeping with the boss at the time two sons and came up pregnant. She didn’t know whose child you were, so she went into hiding.”

“What?! You’re lying!” Eve shouted.

“She kept the truth from you because she didn’t want them to find out about you. The man told me that after mom left, his brother, your father was killed. He couldn’t have any children himself, so that makes you and Devin the only family he has left.”

“No.” Eve said, as she held on to Devin as tight as she could. ‘She’s lying, I don’t believe it.’ Eve thought, disbelief written all over her face. “But how are you involved in this?”

“I’m involved in this mess right now because of Alistair. Because of my hatred for you dear sister, I helped him keep Devin away from you and Julian. I wanted you to suffer. And because I helped in this scheme, I screwed up badly. I know your uncle knows about my involvement with Alistair and since Al here is dead, I know I’m next.” Liz said bitterly.

“Liz, why did things happen the way they did between us?” Eve said somberly.

“After you left for school, mom told me that she loved you more than me, that you were the important one and that I was nothing. The reason that mom and dad treated you differently then Pierce and I is because she only wanted for you to succeed in life and be somebody. She didn’t give a damn about me or Pierce, and you know how my dad hurt me. That’s why I hated you and wanted you to suffer, just like she wanted me to suffer.” Liz said bitterly as tears fell from her eyes. She then reached into her pocket, pulled out her cell phone and dialed a few numbers.

“Melissa, it’s me.”

“Is Alistair dead?” Melissa asked.

“Yeah. You should get over here too, I have Devin, Julian and my sister here with me.”

“I’m on my way.” Melissa said then hung up.

“You three over towards the couch now.” Liz shouted.

“My son needs help Liz, I won’t let him die.” Eve yelled.

“You’re just gonna have to wait until Melissa gets here!”

Twenty minutes later, Melissa came walking into the Crane mansion with three men, then headed towards the living room.

“Damn Liz, you really did it.” Melissa smirked then looked towards Eve, Julian and Devin. “So I finally get to meet the boss’ niece.”

“Can we hurry this up already?” Liz scoffed.

“Fine. You three, get her and the boy but leave him.” Melissa said.

Julian narrowed his eyes in on Melissa’s eyes and then he shouted “I won’t let you take them from me! You can’t have them!”

“That’s just too bad. Boys!” Melissa scoffed then waved her hands towards Eve and Devin.

Julian was going to try fighting all three men at once, he wasn’t going to let them take Eve and Devin without a fight. Julian then swung at one of them, but the man dodged it and punched him in the ribs. Julian doubled over in pain as Eve called out to him. He then tried punching the man again, but this time the man kicked him in the ribs then hit him over the head with something knocking him to the ground with a loud thud. Blood started pouring out of Julian’s mouth and nose as he tried to reach his hand towards Eve, but next thing he knew, everything went black.
