Chapter twenty-one

[present time]

Fox and Simone looked absolutely terrified as they stared at Whitney. She had this freaky looking grin on her face as she stared straight ahead. Simone cautiously reached out and tapped Whitney’s shoulder to see if she could get a reaction out of her. She nearly ripped Fox’s backdoor off the hinges when Whitney suddenly turned around and looked at her funny.

‘What hell is going on with her?!’ Fox thought as he inched a little further away from Whitney as possible.

“Uh…Whitney?” Fox called out to her cautiously.

Whitney suddenly stopped grinning freakishly, and turned her head towards Fox.

“So that’s what it was.” She said more to herself.

Fox and Simone looked at each other, then nodded as they waited for Whitney to continue.

“No wonder Devin’s face intrigued me so much. He looked so familiar. I ran into him couple of times and we talked a little. We had a lot in common. And just now, when said he was our brother, a light flashed before me. Devin looks so much like mom, but I was too blind to see it.”

“It’s okay.” Simone said to her.

“Fox we have to find him and my mother…” Whitney said with panic in her voice.

“I know. Look, I have to go. You girls stay by the phone, I’m about to go bust my dad out of the hospital. He’ll know where to start.” He said to reassure them.

“Alright.” Simone said as she and Whitney got out Fox’s car and watched him drive off.

“Our brother was right up under our noses this whole time. I hope he and mom are alright.” Whitney whispered.

[early 1957]

After that incident a year back between Christine and Claude, the two of them quickly became friends. Whenever Jackson was out doing some runs, he would ask Claude to stay and keep her company. It was during one of those runs that things between Christine and Claude changed.

Claude was leaning back in his chair with no shirt on, smoking a cigarette and drinking some whiskey. Taking a quick puff of his cigarette, he sat it down in the whiskey top then lifted the bottle of whiskey to his mouth, taking a long sip on it. Things between he and Christine had gotten a little uncomfortable as of lately. Sometimes at night, he would find himself dreaming about what it would be like to make love to her. And tonight as he sat in that chair smoking and drinking away, he dreamt about her now. Noise behind him startled him out of his dream as he turned and saw Christine appear in the doorway of the living room. He gulped as he looked at her. Her hair was down framing her beautiful face and she was wearing a white nightgown. He realized he was gawking at her again, so he turned back towards the front.

Christine stared at Claude after he turned his head back towards the front. She had to admit, Claude was a handsome man and that was it. For a while now, whenever it was just the two of them alone, things felt kind of awkward.

“Claude, is something wrong?”

“Naw Chris, everything’s fine.” He said then took another sip of his whiskey.

“No it ain’t. Why won’t you look at me?”

“Because I can’t.”

“Why not? Tell me…” She said as she walked around and stood right in front of him.

“You want the truth?” Claude said seriously.

Christine nodded.

“The truth is whenever I’m around you I just wanna… kiss you, hold you, make love to you.” He said then lowered his head.

Christine was taken back by what Claude had just told her. She was speechless. Claude then stood up and now was inches from her face. Christine noticed this and looked him in the eyes. Slowly he pulled her closer to his body, then leaned down and captured her lips.

Devin was awakened to the sounds of kicking and banging on the door to his room. His shoulder was throbbing like hell and he didn’t want to move, but he had as he looked to the left and saw that the noise was coming from Eve as she yelled and kicked at the door.

“You open up this damn door right now! I mean it, open this door!” Eve shouted as she kicked the door again.

“Mom.” Devin said as he slowly sat up and threw his legs over the side of the bed.

Eve turned around when she heard Devin call out to her. In the week since they’ve been held here, she had gotten use to him calling her mom now.

“Devin you shouldn’t be moving, alright? Just lie back down, I can handle this.” She said as she touched his face.

“No I should help you.” He said. “This is getting out of hand, we’ve been here for a week and he still hasn’t shown his face yet.”

“I know.”

Hearing the knob on the door turn, they both turned to see who it was. Walking through the door was the man they had yet to see until now.

“Eve, Devin. So we finally meet face to face.” He said to them with his deep baritone voice.

“So you must be my mother’s uncle?” Devin said.

“That’s right.”

“You lie, my father didn’t have any brothers. So you can’t be my uncle because I don’t have one.”

“Your mother lied to you. Your real father was my brother, not Warren Johnson.”

“Whatever…” She scoffed. “Listen, I don’t give a damn if you’re my uncle or not. You let me and my son go now!” Eve shouted.

“I can’t do that girlie.”

“You can’t keep us here against our will!”

“I can and I will!” The man shouted back. “You’re all the family I have left, so from now on, you both are my responsibility.”

“Go to hell.” She spat.

The man smirked.

“You’re so much like your mother, same fiery attitude too. You even look like her.”

“What do you want with us?” Devin asked suddenly.

“When the time comes you’ll know.”

Fox was now on his way back to the hospital after his talk with Whitney and Simone. As he drove, he came up with this idea on how to get Julian out of the hospital without being noticed. For his plan to work, he called Chad and told him to meet him in the hospital parking lot. Ten minutes later, he pulled into the parking lot and saw Chad standing by his car.

“So are you sure you wanna do this man, you know, bust your pops out so soon after he woke up?”

“Yeah, I’m sure.”

“Ok. What do I gotta do?” Chad asked. Fox then proceeded to tell Chad his plan and when he was finished, Chad looked at him and nodded his head.

“Let’s do this.” Fox said.

[late June 1957]

After Claude kissed Christine that night, the two of them couldn’t get enough of each other. Every time Jackson left on one of those runs, the two of them were basically tearing each other’s clothes off. The affair had been going on since that night in early February and Jackson didn’t have a clue.

For the past two weeks, Christine had been feeling sick to her stomach. Every time she ate, a few minutes later she was in the bathroom, spilling her insides in the toilet bowl. She didn’t know what was wrong with her but she was going to find out today. So she brushed her teeth and wiped her face off. She then got dressed, hopped in her car and drove to the hospital.

Two hours later, a sickly looking Christine walked through the front door of her home. The news she had just got completely took her by surprise. The doctor who examined her told her that she was a month pregnant and she literally fainted on the spot. This was a disaster. She was pregnant and didn’t know who the father was. Even though she and Claude had been intimate since that night, she was still sleeping with Jackson too. She didn’t know what to do. She walked over the couch, sat down and just stared out window across from her.

Jackson walked into the living room and found Christine on the couch looking out of the window. He was worried about her. She hadn’t been feeling good as of late and he wanted to make sure that she was alright.

“Chrissy?” he called out to her. Christine looked over to the right and saw Jackson standing by their bedroom door.

“Jack.” She said. Jackson then walked over to the couch and sat down next to her.

“You feelin’ better?”

“I’m not sick… I’m pregnant.” She just blurted out.

“Are you serious?!” He looked at her.

She nodded.

“I’m gonna be a pops!” When he said that, Christine noticeably cringed in fear. Jackson then took hold of her hand, pulled her to his body and kissed softly on the lips.

After Jackson kissed her, Christine didn’t even look him in the face, she was too ashamed to. Jackson kissed her one more time and then ran out of the door shouting back to her that he was going to go tell everyone. The moment he stepped foot out of the front door, Christine ran into their bedroom and started packing. She knew that when Claude found out, that he would want to know if the baby was his. She just couldn’t face him either. Twenty minutes later, she had everything that she would need to take with her, placed the letter that she wrote while she packed on top of the dresser and walked out of the bedroom she shared with Jackson and her home for good.

[present]

Julian was sitting up in his bed growing restless by the minute over how long Fox was taking to get back here. He needed to start working on finding Eve and Devin as soon as possible. So while he waited, he picked up the phone to his right and called one of his detectives.

“Robert, this is Julian Crane. I need your assistance… I need you to find this woman for me… Her name… Liz Sanbourne… I need for you to find her right away… this is a matter of live and death… Two or three days… You know my cell number, so I’ll be waiting to hear from you.” Julian finished and hung the phone up.

“Dad, you ready?” Fox said as he walked into Julian’s room.

“What kept you so long?” Julian sneered.

“Sorry. It took longer than I thought. Anyways, let’s get you dressed so we can get the hell out of here.” Fox smirked.

Ten minutes later, Julian was dressed in a pair of blue jeans, a black t-shirt and a pair of black shoes. Fox then helped him stand up and they walked over to the door. Fox pulled his cell phone out and dialed in Chad’s numbers. “We’re ready.” Was all Fox said as he opened up the room door, looked out both ways and watched as Chad walked up the nurse’s station and passed out. As people came running to help assist Chad, Fox and Julian walked off the other way.

[late November 1957]

Since walking out on Jackson that day in late June, Christine moved from city to city, state to state. She was now six months pregnant and all of the running that she was doing was taking its toll on her and her child. She smiled a bit as thought about her child. When she first found out, she was scared because she didn’t know who the father was, but as the months passed, she came to the conclusion that it didn’t matter who the father was, this was her baby and she was going to raise her child the same way she was raised.

She was now in Boston, Massachusetts. She had been here for about a month and a half. Today, she sitting down at this restaurant eating bacon and eggs, when this older looking gentleman approached her table.

“Good day Miss.” He said to her.

“Good day to you too sir.” She smiled.

“You wouldn’t mind if I sat here would you?”

“No go right ahead.” Christine said as she chewed on her eggs.

“I’m Warren Johnson and you’re name is?” he blurted out. Christine looked at him closely as she continued to chew on her eggs and then wondered if she should tell him her name. Sitting her fork down on the plate, she wiped her mouth off before speaking.

“What is it you really want sir?” She asked him curiously.

Warren was caught off guard with her question.

“Well… I’ve noticed that you’ve been coming here everyday for the past month and a half now.” Warren said as he scratched the back of his head. “And I’ve never seen you with a man here before, so I was wondering if you were married or somethin’.”

“I see.” Christine said quietly. She looked at Warren Johnson again, this time more carefully. He was way older than Jackson, Claude and herself and he seemed to have his priorities straight. It was a good thing that no one here knew who she was, or she sure would’ve found herself in jail or the electric chair.

The things that she was involved in back in Georgia, the robberies and the killings, they were really affecting her now. She didn’t want her child to ever know what kind of person she was back then, she wanted for her child to be better then her, to be somebody. She decided right then that she was going to change things around, so she told Warren her name.

“No I’m not married. And my name is Tanya Lincoln.” She smiled at him again.

“It’s nice to met you Tanya. So where you from?”

“I’m from Georgia. Back there, people knew me as Christine.”

“Christine? But I thought you said your name was Tanya?” Warren curiously said.

“When I was younger, I didn’t like it when people called me Tanya, I liked Christine better.”

“So what do you want me to call you now? Christine or Tanya?” He smirked.

“Call me Tanya. I’m older now and Christine just doesn’t suit me anymore.” She smirked back.

After getting the formal introductions out of the way, Warren and Christina a.k.a ‘Tanya’, would continue to see each other daily. The two of them became really close in that short amount of time. Not too long afterwards, Warren asked for her hand in marriage and promised to help raise her child as his own so she said yes. Then two months later, Tanya Lincoln Johnson gave birth to a beautiful healthy baby girl and asked Warren to name her. Warren looked down at his beautiful baby girl and simply named her after his mother…Eve.
