Chapter twenty-three

Melissa walked quietly into the room that Devin and Eve were being held in. The lights were dimmed low, so she walked in a little closer and studied the two of them closely as they slept peacefully on the two beds in the room. She didn’t know why her boss didn’t see it, but she did when she looked at Eve’s face. The moment she laid eyes on Eve at the Crane mansion that night, she knew. She then turned towards that wall behind her and cut on the lights.

“You two let’s go.” She called out and watched Eve and Devin stir in their sleep. Devin was the first to wake up as he rubbed his eyes and look up at Melissa.

“Who are you?” Devin asked.

“I’m Melissa Warner.”

“Where is he?”

“Your great-uncle is waiting for you now. Tonight you’ll finally learn why you have been brought here.” Melissa said looking him in the eyes.

Devin looked down at Eve before shaking her shoulder a bit to wake her up. Eve blinked her eyes a few times and looked around the room before looking up at Devin. She noticed Devin smile at her then focus his eyes on something else. She followed his eyes and came face to face with Melissa.

“What do you want?”

“I want for you two to come with me.”

“And why should we?” Eve asked.

“Either you both come willingly or I’ll be forced to get nasty?” Melissa smirked evilly.

After his talk with Liz, Julian met back up with the others as they returned back to the police station from eating at Wendy’s. He told them what Liz said to him and instantly Simone fainted and hit the ground hard. They all gasped in horror at the site of Simone hitting the ground like that. Carefully, Fox picked her up, carried her out to the car and got in as Whitney drove them back to the hotel they were staying in.

An hour later, Simone was slowly opening her eyes and looking around the place she was in. She finally recognized it as the room she and Whitney were sharing at the hotel they were staying in.

“Simone, how are you feeling?” Julian asked her.

“I feel fine.” She said.

“Are you sure Simone?” Whitney asked just to make sure that she was alright.

Simone nodded.

“This is unbelievable. Mom has yet another sibling… this one she didn’t even know about. What is going on?” said Whitney.

“I don’t know, but I just got off the phone with Robert, my investigator. He gave me some information on Claude Knight.”

“Ok dad, let’s hear about this Claude Knight.”

Melissa escorted Devin and Eve down the hall and into this beautiful bright red room. She then told them to take a seat over by the window and wait until she came back. Eve just rolled her eyes and gave Melissa the finger and Devin just stood by her with his arms folded.

“I don’t like this mom, something’s not right.” Devin said.

“I know. I don’t like this either.”

A few minutes later, Melissa came back into the room with her boss Claude Knight by her side. He looked from Devin to Eve and then towards Melissa. Melissa nodded her head, then left the three of them alone.

“I know you may have questions for me, so I’m willing to answer them.” Claude said.

“How are you really my uncle?” Eve asked.

“My older brother Jackson is your biological father. Christine ran away from him and Warren Johnson claimed you as his own.”

“Who the hell is this Christine?! My mother’s name is Tanya.”

“I knew your mother as Christine Lincoln. When she met and married Warren Johnson, she told him her name was Tanya. People here in Macon, Georgia still remember your mother by that name.”

“What do you want with me?”

“I just wanted you to know where you came from. I wanted for you to know that you were not alone in this world… that you had someone here for you. And I want you and your son to take over the family business.”

Eve looked at her uncle as if he was crazy.

“I’m not taking over any illegal business, family or not. I’m a doctor and I love what I do.”

“You have too. This is all yours, everything that this family has worked to get is yours.”

“I don’t want it. I’m not my mother.”

“Damn it Eve, why do you have to make this so difficult?” Claude sighed.

“I don’t know you and you don’t know me. So I’m gonna ask you this one last time, let me and my son go now?” Eve said in a serious tone.

“I’m afraid he can’t do that.” A voice behind Claude said.

“I thought I told you to leave the three of us alone.” Claude sneered then turned around and faced Melissa.

“I can’t let them go and I can’t let you go either…father.” Melissa said as she pointed a gun at him.

Julian and Fox watched as Whitney and Simone boarded a plane at Metropolitan Airport from Detroit back to Harmony. It took them about two hours to finally get them to go back to Harmony with the promise that when they returned home, it would be with Eve and Devin. After watching them disappear in the terminal, Julian and Fox walked to another terminal and boarded the Crane jet for Macon, Georgia.

Since they left the hotel earlier, Fox constantly kept a close eye on Julian. His father hadn’t looked very well since they left the police station and come to think of it, Julian hadn’t looked good since they left the hospital in Harmony either.

“Dad, how are you holding up?” Fox asked him curiously.

“I’m fine son, why do you ask?”

“It’s just that you haven’t looked good since we left Harmony. I’m worried.”

“You don’t have to worry about me, I’ll be fine once we find Eve and Devin.” Julian said to him, then closed his eyes and fell asleep.

Eve looked from Claude to Melissa and then to Devin. The look that she had on her face was the same look that Devin had on his. What was going on here?

“What are you talking about Melissa?” Claude demanded.

“You heard me. I called you father.”

“That’s impossible. You know I’m sterile. I can’t have children.”

“DNA doesn’t lie. You are my father and you can’t change that.”

“Well then if he’s your father, then that makes you my cousin?” Eve said out loud.

Melissa turned her eyes to Eve and shook her head.

“No.”

“What do you mean no? If he’s my uncle then that makes you my cousin right?” Eve said.

“Under usual circumstances that would be true but that isn’t the case right now. You see, Claude here is not your uncle. I know Liz told you about your whore of a mother. Getting knocked up and running away because she didn’t know who your real father was.” Melissa said then turned her attention back to Claude. “The doctor’s told you back then that you couldn’t have children and you believed them. And all the while you had two daughters out there. Two daughters who are four months apart.”

“Daughters…” Claude whispered.

“That’s right, daughters. Seriously, you couldn’t see the resemblance?” Melissa said then looked back at Eve.

“That can’t be right… You’re my sister?” Eve asked. Now this had just gotten out of hand!

“Don’t be shocked big sister.”

Claude then looked from Eve to Melissa. It was true, they did look alike and he never noticed it.

“Oh my god… Jackson didn’t father Eve… I did.”

Melissa nodded.

“Well, now that that’s all out in the open, I think it’s time to end this once and for all.”

“What are you talking about?” Claude asked.

“Once I kill you father, then I’ll kill Eve here and her son. The family business will be mine.”

Devin who had been relatively quiet the whole time was livid when he heard Melissa threaten his mother.

“You’re not laying a damn hand on my mother because I’ll kill you before you get the chance.” Devin sneered.

Three hours later, Julian and Fox were walking the streets of Macon, Georgia. It was Julian’s idea to walk around and ask about Claude Knight instead of heading straight to the police. Before they landed, he had a chill run down his spine that made the hair on his neck stand on still. Eve and Devin needed him now and he had to find them before it was too late. Just as they were about to leave and head back over to the hotel they were staying in, Fox decided to ask one more person about Claude Knight.

“Excuse me sir, my name is Fox Crane and this is my father Julian. We were wondering if by chance you know of a Claude Knight.” Fox said.

The man who looked to be around in his late 40’s looked at Fox closely then answered him.

“Yeah I know about Claude. Everyone here knows about Claude. Why you lookin’ for him?”

Before Fox could answer him, Julian started talking.

“Why we’re looking for him is none of business? Just tell us where we can find him and I’ll make you a very rich man.” Julian said.

“I don’t think I like your attitude mista, so I ain’t tellin’ you nothin’.”

Julian looked the man up and down before he grabbed him by the collar of his filthy shirt and slammed him into the wall.

“You tell me right now where Claude Knight’s home is, or else I’ll kill you.”

“Lemme go man!” the man struggled.

“If anything happens to my son and the woman I love all because you wouldn’t tell where he lives, so help me I’ll…”

“Dad, let him go!” Fox shouted as he tried to pry Julian’s hands off of the man.

“Alright I’ll tell you!”

Once the man told Julian everything he needed to know, Fox took out his check book and wrote him a hefty check then watched as his father released him.
