Chapter twenty-four

Claude stared at Melissa as if she were crazy. He still didn’t believe that she and Eve were his daughters; it was impossible… it had to be. The doctor’s told him he couldn’t have any children, so how was this possible.

“I want proof that you’re my daughter Melissa. And as for Eve, I know she’s Jackson’s daughter.” Claude said.

Melissa shook her head.

“Wrong. You are my father and Eve is my older sister. You can’t talk your way out of this, I know the truth and I want what’s due to me.”

“If Eve is my oldest daughter, then it goes to her and her children. That’s the way it’s always been.”

Eve looked at Melissa then to Claude.

“She can have everything. I don’t want it. I just want to live my life in peace.”

“Eve, you have to take it. You are my oldest child and that makes you next in line.”

“Damn it old man, I don’t want it! Melissa, just let me and my son go and you’ll never see us again.” Eve pleaded.

“I would if I could but I can’t. I’m still your younger sister and there’s always the possibility that you or one of your children will want to come and claim things. I’m not having that. Once he’s dead, then I can kill you and that half-breed son of yours.” She raised her gun up and pointed it at Claude.

The information that Fox and Julian received from the man was right on point as they now stood in front of the Knight compound. Guards were everywhere in the front and that’s why Fox thought it would be a bad idea if they just went up to the front door, so they snuck around back and found an area where they could hide from them. After looking around a bit more, Fox went down on all fours as Julian stood on his back and hopped over the tall wall in front of them.

‘I’m too old for this kind of sh*t.” Julian thought with a frown on his face after he was over the wall. Once he was over, Fox followed a short while later.

Julian thought it was kind of weird for a place like this not to have any guards in the back. The two of them then decided to be cautious as they looked for a way inside of the mansion.

Devin moved in front of his mother as he saw Melissa hold her gun up. He wasn’t going to take any chances of her suddenly turning and firing on his mother.

“Melissa, don’t do this.” Claude pleaded as he held his hands up in front of him.

“I’m sorry father, but I have to do this.” And without blinking, she fired once hitting Claude in the right shoulder.

“Oh my god!” Eve shrieked as she ran over to where Claude had fallen to check his pulse.

“You crazed b*tch!” Devin shouted. Melissa then turned her gun on him and was about to fire when Eve suddenly grabbed hold of her arm.

As the two sisters struggled for possession of the gun, Eve somehow managed to yell out to Devin to get Claude out of here, that he was still alive. Devin shook his head and said no. He just couldn’t leave her, not like this.

Eve suddenly elbowed Melissa in the stomach, which caused her to drop the gun. Melissa gasped for air as the impact of Eve’s elbow made her go numb in the knees before dropping to the ground with a loud thud. Once Eve was sure that Melissa was out of it for the moment, she ran over to her son and father.

“Damn it Devin, why didn’t you listen to me?” She cried out as tears fell from her eyes.

“Because I couldn’t leave you alone with her mom.” Devin said.

Eve then looked down at Claude as he started moaning out loud in pain.

“We have to get him to the hospital now. His pulse is very weak and he might not make it if we don’t hurry.”

“Alright.” Devin said before bending down and scooping up Claude. ‘Man, he’s heavy.’

Meanwhile Julian and Fox had found a way into the mansion and where currently in the basement. From where they stood, you could hear noise coming from what sounded like the kitchen above. Fox whispered for Julian to stay back as he went and checked things out. Five minutes later, Fox came back and told him that the only person in the kitchen was the cook and that there was a door to the left of the room.

As quietly as they could, Julian followed Fox up the stairs and together they walked softly pass the cook who was turned towards the stove, out the door and into the hallway. Once there, they heard footsteps heading their way, so they scrambled to find some where to hide when Julian found this door to the left of them, grabbed Fox and ran inside.

“Dear lord that was close.” Fox whispered.

“Yeah. Now what do we do? We can’t stay in this room too long, someone’s bound to come in here.” Julian whispered back.

Fox began looking for a place for them to escape when he came to the window across the room from them. He walked over and moved the curtains out of the way, then looked out. From where he was, he could see that there were a few guards walking back and forth, but then he turned his head to the right and saw a ladder next to this window. ‘What in god’s name is a ladder doing next to this window? Man the guards here are so stupid.’ He thought as he shook his head. “Dad, come on. I found a way out of here.”

“What are you talking about?” Julian said as he walked over and stood next to him. Julian then looked to where Fox was looking and began shaking his head. “Oh no, no, no, no… I’m too old to be climbing up ladders.”

“C’mon dad, you climbed over a wall. You do want to save Eve and my brother right?”

Julian let out a defeated sigh, before shaking his head yes. Fox smiled at him then looked out the window to make sure that there where no guards around before hopping out and running over to where the ladder was and started climbing. Julian then took a deep breath before doing exactly what Fox just did and started climbing the ladder too.

Eve looked around the nearest corner to make sure that there were no guards around before turning back and signaling for Devin to hurry. Once Devin was beside her, they started walking as fast as they could to find some way to get out of this damn mansion. They were constantly looking over their shoulder to make sure that they weren’t being followed. It was as Eve looked over her shoulder to check again that she ran into what felt like a wall.

“What the hell was that?!” She groaned as she grabbed her nose and fell to the floor.

“Eve?!” The person said.

“Mom?!” Devin said as he looked and found her on the ground while this tall guy stood over her.

Eve moved her hand away from her nose then blinked a few times to see who or what the hell she bumped into. Once she could see clearly, she looked up and saw that it was Fox she bumped into.

“Oh my god Fox, what are you doing here?” She said as he helped her up. Eve then pulled him into a deep hug.

“We came here to find you.” Fox said as she pulled back and looked up at him curiously.

“We?” Eve said then looked behind him. Once she saw who it was behind him, she released Fox, and ran over to that person.

“Eve!” Julian said as he opened his arms and welcomed Eve’s warmth against his body.

Eve ran into Julian’s arms and held him close to her body before pulling back and kissing him passionately on the lips.

“Whoa…” Fox said as he scratched the back of his head. He then turned around and finally noticed someone else was there with them. “So you must be Devin.”

“Yeah and you are?”

“I’m Fox, your younger brother.”

“Ohh…” That was all Devin got out before looking behind him when he heard Claude groan. “Mom!”

Eve finally broke her lip lock from Julian and caressed his face before turning and running over to Devin. Julian walked over towards Devin as well.

“Devin.”

“Father.” Devin said as he went over to Julian and gave him a hug.

“I’m so glad you and your mother are alright.”

“I know.” He said, then turned back and spoke to Eve. “Mom how is he?”

“Eve, Devin… who is this man?” Julian asked.

Eve looked towards Julian then lowered her head before speaking.

“This here is Claude Knight… my father.”

Julian looked down at the groaning man Eve had just said was her father. ‘So this is Claude Knight’ He thought with a scowl on his face. This man was the cause of all things that happened in his life and Eve’s too. Sure Alistair had a part in it as well, but this man was just as guilty.

“So this is the man who held this huge debt over my father’s head? That forced my father to keep me away from you all those years ago.”

“Julian…” Eve said.

“I know… it’s all in the past now.” Julian said. “Who did this to him?”

“Melissa. She’s crazy. We have to get out of here before she finds us.” Eve said as she looked around.

“Alright. It’ll be faster if Devin and I carried your father, then dad could show you the way we got in here.” Fox said.

“The old man has lost a lot of blood, we have to be careful not to make his injury worse.” Devin said as he bent down next to his mom.

Eve put her hand on her father’s neck to see if he still had a pulse before looking back up at Julian as he held his hand out for her. She reached up and took it as he squeezed it a bit. Devin and Fox slowly picked Claude up by his arms, earning another moan from him and placed both of his arms around their necks as they held him up around his waist. Julian looked over his shoulder to make sure that the boys were ready before pulling Eve the way they came.

Melissa groaned a bit as she rolled over to the side and slowly sat up. Eve had hit her pretty hard in the stomach if it was able to knock her out. Once she was standing up on two wobbling legs, she carefully walked over to the where her gun was and then headed out of the room. She was going to find her father, sister and nephew and then kill them once and for all.
