Chapter 18

Gwen was awoken by the oromas of grilled steaks and roasted corn.

"Mmmm what smells so good?" She muttered sleepily.

"That's our dinner." Colyer replied. "You're up just in time for a delight to your taste buds. I had set the table and now I am ready to for my honored guest to take her place at the table."

Gwen got up and stretched the sleep out of her body.

"I will be delighted to fulfill your request once I changed into something a little less stuffy." She replied.

"I'm in no hurry."

"I'll be right back." She exchanged her suit for an oversized tee-shirt and a a pair of comfortable jeans.

"I see that you eat a lot of crackers." He joked. "Do you have stock in the companies?"

"No." She replied seriously. "But there is a reason for that if you're willing to hear me out."

"Sure."

Before Gwen could collect her thoughts on how to approach the subject of her pregnancy without freaking him out, the doorbell rang.

"Excuse me." She said. "I wasn't expecting anyone else tonight." She went to the front door. "I wonder who can that be?"

"Gwen open up!" Ethan yelled. Gwen was puzzled by the urgency in his voice. "It's very important that I talk to you tonight." He stated firmly.

"Ethan?" She opened the door. "Why are you here? What is so urgent that it couldn't have waited for another time?"

"Before you sic the dogs on me I have something that you might want to hear." He said quickly as he barged in. He looked at Colyer through narrow slits.

"Ethan what is it? Colyer and I was about to sit down to a nice dinner..."

"It's about your friend Colyer Fox." He interrupted.

Gwen turned to look at Colyer, Colyer shrugged his shoulders.

"What about me?" He asked Ethan.

Ethan ignored his question. "Colyer Fox is engaged to Victoria Halstead, of Halstead Manufactures." Ethan announced triumphantly. He produced the proof from his pocket and handed it over to Gwen.

The newspaper clipping showed the picture of the happy couple looking adoringly into each other's eyes, followed by a lengthy article.

She gaped at Colyer. "Is this true?" She asked in a tight voice. "Are you really engaged?"

Colyer took in a deep breathe and exhaled. "Gwen I can explain." He replied. Gwen held up her hand to silence him.

"Please leave." She said through clench teeth.

"Gwen..." He began to protest.

"Colyer I said leave!" She shouted angrily. She forced herself to fight back the tears that wanted so desperately to escape.

Without another word he turned to leave...

"Gwen..." Ethan began.

"I want you to leave too." She said.

Ethan looked surprised. "But Gwen, surely..."

"Haven't you caused enough damage?" She questioned. "Now LEAVE!!" She pointed to the door.

She felt a cramp raced through her a lower body, she let out a moan and double over, grabbing her stomach.

"Gwen!" Ethan cried. "Are you okay?!"

Gwen began to cry...

"Ethan, I think I'm losing the baby..."

Colyer head snapped back. "Baby?! You're pregnant?!" He asked in disbelief.

"Don't just stand there asking stupid questions, call an ambulance!" Ethan yelled.

Colyer did as he was told and waited for the ambulance. He watched as Gwen held on to Ethan as he craddled her in his arms.

"It's going to be alright baby." He whispered to comfort her. "We are not going to lose our child."

The ambulance came and Colyer wanted to ride in the back with her to the hospital but Ethan wouldn't allowed it.

"Gwen is having my child." He snarled. "Why don't you go back to Dallas and just leave us the hell alone!"

Colyer held his tongue and decided to follow them in his pick up truck.

At the hospital, Ethan called their family and Sheridan and explained to them that Gwen was in the emergency room at the hospital complaining of stomach cramps.

"What happened?" Rebecca asked as soon as she and Jonathan rushed into the room. She was nearly hysterical. "Did she fall? Where's Theresa?"

"Rebecca, Theresa is still behind bars." Ethan assured her." Gwen got a little upset with him." He pointed to Colyer who was sitting on the opposite end of the hall.

Rebecca got into Colyer's face. "Why would my daughter get upset with you? What did you do to her?"

Colyer gulped hard. "Ma'am it's all Ethan's doing." He explained. "He told Gwen that I was engaged and I-I guess the shock was too much for her, I didn't know she was pregnant." He hung his head in his hands.

Rebecca marched over to Ethan and slapped him with such fury, the spit flew from his mouth... Stunning everyone.

"You stupid asshole--> , are you trying to kill my daughter and grandchild?" She yelled. "You knew she was in a delicate condition..."

Rebbecca words horrified him. Ethan hadn't thought of the affect his news would have on Gwen and the baby and now she could be losing their child and it was his own selfish fault.

"Hey." Ivy protested. "Why are you taking it out on Ethan? It was Mr. Fox who deceived her!"

"Because Ethan knew better, you stupid bitch!" Jonathan roared.

He approached Ethan...

Eve came out just in time to prevent an all out battle between the two families. All eyes fell on her as she gave them the news;

"Gwen and the baby are just fine." She announced. "She ate something that didn't agree with her."

"Are you sure? Did you run tests?" Ethan questioned.

"Yes." Eve assured everyone. "She is asking for her parents and Sheridan."

"What about me?" Ethan asked. "Did she ask for me?"

"I'm sorry Ethan." Eve replied. "But Gwen made it perfectly clear that she didn't want to see you or Mr. Fox."

Colyer got up and left, at least he had the satisfaction of knowing that Ethan's plot to win Gwen over has failed.
