Twisted, Chapter 6 (Mother and Daughter)

Chapter 6

Eve tossed and turned in the bed next to her husband. She could not believe that she felt this hot tonight. It was three in the morning and she was glad that she didn’t have work tomorrow. She decided to get up and heat up some tea and drink it outside. She loved summer nights like these and they were best enjoyed barefoot on the grass. She had worked hard in order to build this life with T.C. She sacrificed so much just to be able to give her daughters the life she never had. Just as she was getting ready to sit beside a tree she saw a fast movement from the side of her house.

Whitney had left out the back door in order to meet Chad. She had been slowly moving out of the house and tonight was the last straw. She could still feel the sting of her mother’s hand. She wasn’t going to live with these people any longer. They weren’t even blood. They had lied about that but she knew the truth. They thought she didn’t remember the foster homes but you never forget foster homes. Chad and her shared that bond and it brought them closer together. She had hoped by morning her parents would know of her absence and accept it. Well, she didn’t care what Eve accepted.

“And where are you going?” Eve asked over the rim of her cup. Whitney almost had a heart attack. She didn’t even see her mother out in the night with her long gown on. She looked so beautiful, Whitney almost forgot her anger.

“None of your business…Eve.” Whitney barely stopped and would have kept going except Eve grabbed her leg.

“What did you just call me?” Eve knew that Whitney must now know for sure about her origins. She inhaled deeply.

“You heard me.” Whitney was going to march off but she enjoyed looking down at her mother.

“Sit.” Eve used the tone she hadn’t used in years. It worked. Whitney sat cross legged in front of Eve.

“I know, Mom. I’ve known forever but I didn’t want to hurt you two. Not that it matters because you clearly didn’t care about hurting us. Fooling around with Mr. Crane and all.” Whitney looked her mother in the eye. She could see Chad pulling up but knew he would wait.

“I had a feeling that you hadn’t forgotten. I just hoped that you came to love us as real blood parents. And I know that you have. I wish I could tell you all about me and Julian but I can’t. I can tell you that we haven’t had sex. I don’t know what will happen, there is a past there. I wasn’t all picture perfect, you know.” She lowered her eyes into her cup. She could not believe she was being this honest. It must be the smell of fresh flowers at night. Or the look in her daughter’s eyes.

“I won’t tell Daddy. You will have to do that. I believe you when you say that you haven’t had sex with him, but you clearly have feelings for him. You’ve never jumped Daddy like before. Not in public. Its just that Daddy’s deserves better than this.” Whitney realized that she couldn’t stay mad at her mother for long. She had known for a while that her parent’s marriage was strained and seemed almost too perfect. It was like being a funeral that was taking too long to end. Yet, she had always held out hope.

“Thank you for that. Now I don’t approve of you sneaking out of the house to meet with Chad. You are a grown woman Whitney, if you want to leave to met your boyfriend then just do so. I would rather you do it a more decent hour but, again, you are a grown woman.” Eve shrugged, she suppose she should tell her daughter about being a lady but she didn’t really feel like it. It would only lead to another slap anyway.

“Okay.” She was too stunned to say anything more. She had never thought she’d see the day when her mother Eve Russell would allow her to go be with her boyfriend at three in the morning. Maybe this Julian Crane thing wasn’t so bad. It wasn’t the right time to tell her mother she was moving in with him though. No, that could wait.
