~*~*~*~*~

I’m not sure why I love her, all I know is that I do. Its almost simple when I look at her, watch her face light up at the silliest things, times like that I understand why I feel what I feel. Other times truth must remind me of her other side, the lies she tells, the way she tries to make things happen. Most of the time I want to pull my hair out when it comes to her. Then her puppy eyes stare down at the floor and my heart breaks. I love her because I know her, and I need her because there is no one else like her.

Ethan never understood her, he had this idealistic idea of how she should be. He wanted her to be perfect, and the woman I love, will never be perfect. She’s flawed, even she will tell you that much. People stare at me when I tell them that I love her, they look at me like I’m crazy to want her. This whole town knows about her lies, about everything she did to get Ethan, and the tales of what she tried in order to keep him.

She’s changed a lot since then and she is actually trying to do good now. Her son changed her life, when he was born, life was brought back in her. The sad thing is in her life, good doesn’t hang around for very long. I watched her the day she lost her young son, when his grandfather ripped him from her arms. Somehow he gained custody of that boy and gained control over her all over again.

I watched her stare out of her window for weeks, her best friend walking away to become some big time singer. She was truly alone in her mind. Her mother tried to help her all she could, but one woman can only do so much. Her brothers, they were caught up in their on lives, both loosing the women they loved. I remember the day I came in her house, she sat next to the window, eyes peering outside. I’ve never saw her so distant, for the first time I saw Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald in a new light.

"Theresa you feeling any better?"
Theresa turned around the circles under her eyes dark, her skin pale. "I want my baby." She whispered turning back to the window. "All I want is my baby."
"You’ll get him back."
She shook her head slowly, "No I won’t. You can’t win against the Cranes. Jamie isn’t coming back, I’ve lost my son."
"Don’t say that girl, it isn’t over."
"It is." She said no sign of hope left in her voice. "He’s Six months old today. I bet he’s crawling, he’s such a smart boy."
"And you’ll see him again Resa."
"No, he’s gone. They took him out of the country, Luis told me so."
"You can’t give up."
She turned and frowned. "There’s nothing more I can do. I have lost everything of value in my life. Jamie is a Crane, and I will never have him back."

That day I realized she wasn’t as immature as I had once thought. She had simply dreamed of having the perfect family, and growing up Ethan had seemed to be the perfect man. I watched her day after day stare out the window, tracing Jamie’s name onto the window glass. I couldn’t understand why my heart tugged more and more. All I knew was that she was special, and she couldn’t live like that anymore. So on that day, I, Chad Harris took on the role of making Theresa smile again.

"I’m not going." She frowned crossing her arms at Chad.
"I’m not asking you to go to a party or anything like that, Theresa I just want you to get some fresh air. Take a walk with me girl, that’s all I’m asking." Chad said staring at her.
"Why?" She questioned.
"Because you can’t live like this." He answered back.
"I go outside." She whispered.
"Liar." Chad said looking at her.
"I’m not a liar." She roared.
"When’s the last time you’ve been out of this house?"
"Yesterday." Theresa said her hands on her hips. "I went out and sat in the swing yesterday."
Chad shook his head. "I’ll say it again, your lying."
"Am not."
"Theresa it rained all day yesterday."
"So, I sat in the rain."
Chad frowned. "Pilar told me you sat by the window the whole day. Even when it got stormy, she said she was scared you’d get lighting struck."
Theresa frowned lowering her head. "I’m still not going."
"Theresa I’m not going to let you ruin your life by just sitting here all day."
"I don’t have a life Chad. The day they took Jamie from me my life ended." She frowned. "I don’t want to get fresh air, I don’t want to step outside and see mother’s with their children. I just want to sit here and be left alone." She yelled turning from Chad.
"Well I’m not going to let you do that. What happened to the girl I knew? I want to see that spark in your eyes again Theresa. I’m worried about and I’m not going anywhere unless you’re with me."
Theresa let out a heavy sigh. "Why would you even want to be seen with me Chad? Like you said, I’m a liar. A liar who had a child with Julian Crane, a liar who almost ruined Ethan’s life. So why would you want to help me?" She questioned quickly swinging around to look at him.
"Because I am your friend."
"I don’t need a friend." She growled. "I don’t need anything for anyone."
"Stop lying Theresa! Stop it now! I know your hurting, I see that, but you can’t keep shutting people out. "
"You don’t get it do you? Everyone I get close to gets hurt Chad, My family, Ethan, and my sweet baby boy. I’m not going to let you be next."
Chad grabbed Theresa’s arms and looked at her. "You let me worry about myself. Now get your coat on."
Theresa sighed and rested her on Chad, "You want to help me?" She whimpered.
"Yes Theresa I want to help you."

After that day things got easier, Theresa began to open up to me, cry on my shoulder if needed. I learned a lot about the person behind the mask. How she hurt over the fact that her father had left. She had wanted so badly to find a man to love her, and she had always wondered if her father had ever really cared. I found myself spending more and more time with Theresa. Watching her come alive again, change before my eyes. It was a wonderful sight, watching her smile again, laugh and joke at the little things. Seeing this new person made me smile, but I know parts of who she was will never actually fade away.

"Chad paced in his apartment looking at his clock. "She’s late, its not like her to be late." He said to himself as the door flew open.
"Sorry I’m late." She smiled tossing her purse on the couch.
"Resa are you okay? Did something happen?"
She rolled her eyes. "I got stopped by that new cop." She laughed. "I guess I was going faster than usual."
"Did you get a ticket?"
Theresa shook her head. "I told him my aunt was in the hospital and I had to hurry."
"Theresa, you lied to the man?" Chad questioned shaking his head.
"What? People lie about stuff like that all the time."
"And what’s going to happen when the dude finds out there was no aunt? You know he’s going to ask Luis."
Theresa frowned. "I didn’t think about that."
"Well we have bigger things to worry about. Did you tell Pilar about our trip?"
Theresa shook her head, her eyes falling to the floor. "I told her we were going to New York. "
"You lied." Chad stated frowning.
"I couldn’t tell her where we are going Chad. If Mama finds out I’m going to try and see my son she will have a fit. She has told me over and over to leave the Cranes alone."
"But Resa, Jamie is your son, Pilar will understand."
"No Chad, she won’t. We can’t tell her that we’re going to Paris. She doesn’t even know that I’ve been searching for Jamie."
Chad sighed. "Resa, I’m not going with you unless you call Pilar and tell her everything. You promised me, from now on you’d be honest."
"Chad."
"Theresa, call your mother."
"I can’t." Theresa frowned as Chad picked up the phone, dialing the number.
Handing Theresa the phone he frowned. "No more lies."
Rolling her eyes Theresa spoke into the phone. "Mama its me."

The truth, she actually told Pilar the truth. Of course on the way to Paris she refused to speak to me, but still, she told the truth.
I remember helping her that day, sneak into the home where Jamie was staying, watching her as she ducked the Crane guards, and finally when she entered her son’s bedroom.

Theresa walked over to the baby bed, tears in her eyes, a smile on her face. "Look at him." She whispered, picking up the boy, who was almost a year old. "He’s changed so much."
Her eyes stared at his brown hair, and at his fair skin. "He reminds me of Miguel when we were younger." She said as a little hand touched Theresa’s face. "I’m your mommy Jamie." She smiled. "And I love you so much! I’m so sorry I can’t be with you, I want to angel I do."
"Theresa we can’t stay long." Chad warned.
She smiled. "Can I get him back to sleep? Please, I just want to sing to him again."
Chad watched outside carefully, noting that Jamie’s bedroom door held a sign that read ‘James Crane’.
"Did you name him James?" Chad questioned.
"No his name is Jamie. Jamie Bryant Crane." She smiled.
Holding the boy as she rocked him, singing to him so softly Chad couldn’t make out the words. Slowly the boy drifted off to sleep and Theresa carefully put him down in his bed. Taking out a camera she quickly snapped pictures of the boy, memories to hold on to.
"We need to go now." Chad warned, watching Theresa kiss Jamie on the forehead.
"We can’t take him with us?" She asked tears in her eyes.
"Sweetheart I know you want you, but we can’t."
"He’s my son Chad." She cried.
"I’m so sorry girl, I really am."
Touching his face once more she slowly walked over to Chad. "I love him so much." She said softly.
"And he loves you."

She cried for two days after that, yet she seemed happier. She had saw Jamie, knew her son was healthy, alive. It was after we got home that things changed for us though. When our lives began to come together.

"Chad, why can’t we just stay here and watch videos?" Theresa begged.
"Staying here is fine Theresa, but always watch movies, doesn’t that ever bore you?" Chad asked flopping down on his couch.
"No. I like movies."
"Yeah, those love stories."
"Hey, I’ve saw you get misty eyed in the middle of a few of those ‘love stories’." Theresa laughed. "And don’t deny it Mr. Harris."
"Okay, so ‘City Of Angels’ got to me. But it was so sad." He whined.
"But you liked it just the same." Theresa taunted. "Admit it, you’re a sap."
"Oh now that’s just wrong." Chad smirked tossing a pillow at Theresa laughing as it hit her head.
"Oh you’ll pay for that one." She giggled picking up the pillow and walking over to Chad, smacking him in the head with it.
"Hey no fair!" He laughed grabbing Theresa by her waist as she fell on the couch. Laughing he began to tickle her, watching her eyes light up as she giggled. Finally when he stopped, he was staring down in Theresa’s eyes, in awe of her beauty.
Lowering his head he felt his lips touch hers, careful and slow, his hands stood holding her tiny waist.
Pulling back she looked at him, a spark in her eyes as she grinned. "This changes things." She said touching his face with her hand.
"Changes things for the good or the bad?" Chad asked.
"Oh for the good." Theresa smiled as her lips met his again.

I have never been kissed like that in my life, it was like I woke up from whatever world I had been living in. From that day on, things seemed to just fall into place. I realized caring for Theresa wasn’t as hard as I had once thought. Sure she isn’t perfect, and when she lies I want to scream, I love her for who she is and that’s all I can do. She’s happier now, every since I found my mother. My mother, the woman who helped Theresa get her child back, the woman who has brought both joy and pain in my life.

Eve Russell stood in front of Chad, her hands shaking as she handed him the paper she had been tightly holding.
"What’s this?" He questioned.
"That, is the answer to all your questions, and that is what will get Theresa her son back."
Chad looked at the page in front of him, confusion filling his face. "Care to explain what this means?" He asked.
"Chad, it means that I am your mother and that Julian Crane is your father."
"That’s what it says, but that’s crazy." He almost yelled.
Eve shook her head, "No Chad its not crazy, its all very true. I’ve known for awhile now, before Julian died even. I had the test done, and Chad there is no denying that you are my child."
"Your child? Your child with Julian Crane?" Chad yelled.
Eve wiped tears from her eyes. "Yes its true. Julian and I had a love affair years ago, I became pregnant and when the baby was born, I was told he had died. I don’t know how, but Chad you didn’t die, you’re here, living and breathing."
"This is messed up!"
"No, its what you need to know Chad. I lost my chance at raising you, but Theresa, she doesn’t have to."
"How can I use this to get Jamie back?" Chad questioned in shock.
"If you’ll listen closely I’ll tell you." Eve said with a faint smile.

I listened to the plan of the woman that called herself my mom, and surprisingly enough, her plan was perfect. Out of fear of my plan backfiring, I decided against telling Theresa until I was sure my so called grandfather would return Jamie to her. I just couldn’t risk hurting her with the hope of her son, and then taking it away from her again.

Chad stood staring at Alistair Crane. "Did you really think you could keep this a secret?" Chad questioned.
Alistair simply smiled. "Personally I thought you were dead. That stupid son of mine must have pulled this off somehow." He added as his fist hit the wooden desk.
"Well I do know the truth, I know who I am Gramps, and as a true Crane I plan to use it." Chad smiled.
"What do you want?" The older Crane asked staring at Chad with cold eyes.
"I want you to give Jamie back to Theresa, or else."
"You dare threaten me? You have no right to threaten me."
"That’s were you’re wrong. See I’m guessing that you really don’t want people to know about me, I mean you did try killing me." Chad frowned. "And I’m thinking, being a Crane might be pretty nice. "
"Will you get to it boy?"
"Yeah of course. See here’s the thing, only one thing would make me happier than seeing a low life like you get his. I want you to give Jamie back to Theresa, release all right of the child to her Crane. If you don’t let her have that baby back, I’ll go to the media, tell them my story, then I’ll go to court and get everything that is rightfully mine." He smirked. "So what’s it going to be?"
Al frowned. "You’re a true Crane, Smarter than that idiot father of yours. "
"So you’ll do what I ask?"
The older man nodded his head. "If it means getting you off my back fine! Besides getting rid of that kid will give me one less worry."

A week later Theresa finally held Jamie in her arms. Tears streamed down her face as she kissed him. I remember smiling at the sight, mother and son, finally together and by my side, Eve Russell stood smiling. My mother clutching my hand as we watched Jamie hug his mommy.

"Chad is all going to work out now." Theresa smiled watching her son play with his grandma Pilar.
"You think so?" Chad smiled kissing Theresa's forehead.
"I know so, I love you Chad, I love you so much."
"I love you too Theresa."
"Thank you for giving me back my life." She smiled.
"Sweetheart, you've brought so much to me, and I told you, you'd get Jamie back."
"But you made it happen."
"Actually my mother made it happen." Chad smiled.
"Maybe fate made it happen." Theresa suggested kissing Chad again.

Every since that day, life has been good. I have a mother, the woman that I love, and she, she has her son. We will be married in two weeks, and I personally can’t wait. My life is complete now, a little different but complete.
