Chapter III
Eve slowly stumbled over to the man that took the bullet for her. When
she was close enough to him, she dropped down to her hands and knees while
she struggled to catch her breath. Looking over her shoulder, she stared
at the dead body of Nigel. Closing her eyes, a frown instantly appearing
on her face as she thought about all that had just happened. It was never
her intention to hurt anyone, let alone kill them, but Nigel left her no
choice.
This was the first time in nearly ninety years that she had actually taken
another person’s life. After the first incident, she nearly went insane.
No matter how many times she bathed or scrubbed her skin raw, the dirty, gritty
feeling over what she had did and the smell of blood, never went away. It
took her a very long time to recover from that incident and once she did,
she vowed never to take another person’s life again. Well obviously she just
broke her vow…and felt terrible about it.
Eve clinched her eyes tighter, willing the tears that threatened to escape
as she scooted closer to Julian and lifted him up. Julian groaned out painfully
at the sudden shift in position, but never woke. Every muscle in her body
was screaming as she shifted his left arm around her shoulder then placed
her arms around his waist. Looking around to make sure that no one was around,
Eve tightened her hold around Julian then ran and jumped to the top of the
building to the right. Afterwards, she proceeded straight ahead as the two
of them disappeared into the darkness.
The sound of clothes tearing suddenly jerked Julian awake from his darkened
slumber. It was too painful to open his eyes, so he kept them closed. Where
was he and how did he get here, were the first two questions that came to
mind as he tried to sit up, but something prevented him from moving as pain
shot through his right shoulder, making him moan out in pain.
“Don’t move. You’ll just reopen your wound.” The person said.
Julian instantly opened his eyes this time after the hearing the voice
of the person who spoke to him. Blinking a few times to clear his vision,
once the person came into sight, he gasped.
“It’s you…” Julian whispered.
Eve narrowed her eyes suspiciously. “Who are you? Why were you following
me?” she commanded.
“Julian…Julian Crane.” Julian stuttered. “I wanted to meet you that’s
all.”
Eve stood up then moved away from him. “Well Julian Crane, you’re wanting
to meet me nearly got you killed.”
“Who was that man?” Julian asked as he slowly sat up. He was curious as
to what was really going on. Julian then watched as Eve turned her back
to him, giving him a shocking view of the number of injures she sustained
to her back, as she stared out the window.
“Who that man was, is none of your business.” A hand upon her shoulder
caught Eve off guard as she spurn around to face Julian.
The two of them just stood there, staring at each other’s eyes. Eve’s
breath hitched in her throat as she realized just how close Julian was to
her. Her eyes slowly descended from his eyes as she took in the sight of
him closely. He was about six foot one, a hundred and ninety pounds, short
dark brown hair, nice tanned skinned and a pair of deep brown eyes that a
woman like her could get lost in.
Julian, for the most part, wasn’t fairing well either as he took in the
sight of Eve. Dark hair flowing passed her shoulders, beautiful brown skin,
and a pair of light blue eyes that took his breath away. She stood at about
five foot eight, and probably weighed no more than a hundred and forty pounds.
He nearly groaned out loud when she absentmindedly licked her lips.
‘I wonder what her luscious lips taste like.’ A lecherous thought flashed
in his mind as his eyes sparkled seductively.
Eve immediately blinked her glossed over eyes and pushed Julian away from
her with a snarl. The obvious smell of his arousal suddenly peaked and that
scared her. ‘Stupid sensitive nose.’ She thought with a scowl on her face.
“Don’t ever touch me again!” She snapped.
Momentarily stunned, Julian regained his balance before clearing his throat.
“Sorry.” He mumbled then turned around and sat back on the bed. “What
are you?” he asked in a serious tone.
“None of your damn business.”
“I saw your fangs.”
“You saw nothing!” Eve snapped again then closed her eyes to take a deep
breath to calm down her nerves. Once she was calm, she opened her eyes this
time revealing a pair of light brown ones that Julian didn’t fail to miss.
“Your eyes.” Julian said.
“What about them?”
“They’re light brown. They were light blue before you closed them just
now.” He pointed.
“So?” she raised a brow.
“So you tell me what’s going on? Just what are you?” Julian demanded.
Eve sighed, “I am what I am and nothing more.” She answered truthfully.
Julian’s eyes grew huge, “So you’re a vampire...” his voice trailed off.
“Some people call me that, while others call me a demon or a halfling,
but I’m not sure what I really am actually.” Eve said as she walked over
to the chair beside her bed. “So what do you know about vampires?” she blurted
out.
“They drink blood because they can’t life without it, they can’t go out
into the daylight or they’ll fry to death, you have to die first to become
one…” While Julian named a few things off, Eve rolled her eyes and shook
her head.
“Stupid vampire myths.” She snorted.
“What?”
“Vampire myths. One, I don’t always drink blood. I eat normal food just
like the rest of you. Two, I can walk in daylight but only when I’m wearing
my dark shades. My eyes are very sensitive and the sunlight causes me severe
headaches. And three, you don’t have to die to be turned. When I was turned,
I didn’t die.”
“What do you mean you didn’t die? You have to die to turn over.” Julian
stated.
“Well I didn’t, so that alone makes me different.” Eve huffed then folded
her arms.
“Wow.” Was all Julian could say. He then started thinking about all of
the vampire flicks he watched as a kid.
“Do you have any idea what you’ve just gotten yourself into? Now they
are going to come after you because of me.” Julian watched as Eve started
pacing back and forth. “I can’t deal with this on my conscience.”
“Who are they?” he asked.
Eve stopped her pacing then took a deep breath. She had no choice but
to tell Julian the truth…well the semi-truth…
“They’re hunters. They come from all over the world, different shapes,
sizes and race, hunting creatures of the darkness. They’ve been after me
for a very long time.”
“How long would that be?” Julian asked curiously.
“Long enough. That’s all you need to know.” Eve said dryly.
The room suddenly became quiet and Julian the opportunity to look around.
From what he could guess, they were in a motel. Right next to where Eve was
standing was a small wooden table and two chairs. The bed he was sitting
on was a few feet away from the table and right behind him was the small bathroom.
Once he was done looking around the room, Julian stood up again then walked
over to stand next to Eve.
“Why don’t you sit down so I can clean the wounds on your back?” Julian
said.
Eve turned her head and just looked at him.
“C’mon, it’s the least I can do since you cleaned mine.” Julian smiled.
“Don’t bother, they’ll be healed in the morning.” Eve said then turned
back towards the window.
“Well at least let me wrap them up. You wouldn’t want to sick now would
you?” Julian raised a brow.
“Fine.” Eve shrugged as she removed her now blood soaked, ripped white
shirt revealing a black bra underneath. It’s not like she could get sick
anyways. She hadn’t had a cold since she was twenty-four…and that was more
than a hundred years ago!
‘Dear lord’ Julian sucked in a breath as he stared at her breasts from
the side. Eve suddenly snapped her head in the direction of a gawking Julian
and glared.
“Do you mind?!” She snarled at him, showing off her fangs. ‘Is that all
men think about?!’ She fumed on the inside.
“Sorry.” Julian muttered in an embarrassing tone after being caught staring.
Well he just couldn’t help himself; he was a man after all…
Once Eve was calm enough, she pointed Julian in the direction of the first
aid kit she had. Walking over to where it was, Julian grabbed a few clean
cloths, a pack of bandages and some ointment. Carrying everything he had
over to the bed, he motioned for Eve to come over and sit down.
Eve walked over to the bed and sat down. It was useless for her to fight
so she gave in. She had already told him that all of her injures would be
healed by the morning, but he just wouldn't listen. As Julian moved behind
her and placed his hand on her shoulder, Eve nearly moaned out. This was
the first time in very long time that she was ever this close to a man before.
On second thought, this was the first time that she ever allowed a man this
close to her before. ‘I’m losing my edge.’ Eve sighed.
The injures that Eve had on her back, there was no way a normal human
could survive them, Julian realized. Taking his sweet time with the last
bandage, as he placed it on her lower back, he slowly ran his fingers along
side her waist before resting his hand completely on her hip.
This time a soft moan did come from Eve, as she couldn’t fight it from
coming out. Realizing what she just did, Eve jumped up from the bed, turned
around and grabbed Julian roughly by the arm.
“What the hell is wrong with you?!” Eve hissed. “Do you just walk up to
every woman you meet and touch them like that?”
Julian remained quiet for a moment as he regained his composure. No it
wasn’t like this every time he walked up to a woman he first met, but there
was something about Eve that made his blood boil. Blinking his eyes a few
times, he finally spoke.
“I’m sorry. I don’t what came over me.” Julian lied, as Eve released his
right arm.
Walking over to where the rest of her clothes were, Eve dug into one of
the shopping bags she brought earlier and pulled out a light gray t-shirt
and another bra, then put them on. She then walked over to Julian and handed
him a large t-shirt to put on as well.
“Where are we going?” Julian asked as he put the shirt on.
“We are not going anywhere, you are.” Eve corrected.
“Where are you taking me?”
“Back to the bar.”
“You can’t take me back to the bar!” Julian shrieked.
“The hell I can’t.” Eve snapped.
“You just told me no more than ten minutes ago, that I wasn’t safe anymore
because of you. What makes you think that I’m gonna just sit back and let
you leave me?” Julian said, as a scowl appeared on Eve’s face. “Whether you
like it or not, you’re stuck with me.” He concluded then folded his arms.
‘Gotcha!’
Eve rolled her eyes and sighed. “Ugh fine. C’mon let’s go. It’s not safe
here anymore.”
This was it; he was finally going to get the recognition he always wanted
and deserved. It was quite by accident that he stumbled across her. The woman
his master had been looking for, for more then a hundred years. He knew
that she was the one because of the way his master described her to be and
boy was she a sight for sore eyes.
As he ran down darkened alley, he came upon a chained fence. Hopping over
it, he continued to run until he arrived at this rundown apartment building.
Once he inside, he walked up two flights of stairs before coming to a stop
in front of his apartment door. Walking inside, he sat down in front of his
apartment window then picked up his phone, dialed a few numbers and waited.
“Speak.” The person on the other end of the phone said with a deep commanding
voice.
“M-My lord, my name is Garth sir. I have some information that might be
quite valuable to you.” Garth said.
“Speak more.”
“I know the whereabouts of the woman in black.”
Silence-
“Si-Sir?” Garth stuttered.
“Tell me where you are…now mortal.” He spat in a threatening voice.
“I’m in a small town called Harmony sir.” Garth said before the phone
went dead.
A man of about six foot four rose from his chair by the window and walked
over to stand in front of his fireplace. Looking up at the portrait that
hung high over his fireplace, his eyes slowly scanned over the woman’s beautiful
face. His eyes darkened with lust as he remembered the first time he ever
laid eyes on her.
{Flashback}
Summer 1870
It had been nearly three days since he last fed, and he didn’t know
how long he could go on. He had been traveling nonstop since he arrived
here in Boston from Cambodia. This was not the way a man of his stature,
was suppose to be traveling. He always knew that he was meant to be something
more powerful then any vampire known to man but some mortals and those of
his coven, never respected him enough to be frightened. It had taken him
almost a hundred years to become king of the underworld and now that he was,
everyone knew just how powerful and ruthless he was. Those who tried to betray
him ended up being torture to death with no mercy. Now that he had everything
he always wanted, it was time for him to settle for a while, and the only
way he knew how to settle down was to have woman by his side and not just
any woman, but the one that he would make his mate.
For nearly two hundred years, he traveled over the globe looking
for the right woman to become his mate, but hadn’t come close yet. As he
continued on with his walk, he stumbled across this beautiful lake. Dropping
to his knees, he dunked his head underneath the water to wash away the sweat
hovering over his eyebrows. The minute he came up from under, his eyes nearly
bugged out of his head.
Short dark hair, beautiful smooth brown skin, full supple breasts
and curves in all the right places, not the mention that she was breathtakingly
gorgeous. He never was one to believe in love at first sight, but in this
instance, he was a believer. He continued to watch the object of his affection,
as she submerged under water, then came back up for air. His eyes wandered
to the warm water cascading down her voluptuous body as the sight instantly
sent a chill down his spine. He knew right this very moment, that she was
the one who was going to be his mate. And not the thought of another woman
would ever sway him.
{Flashback ends}
Placing his hand on the portrait, he trailed his fingers across the surface
of her face, before dropping it slowly to his side. “I’m coming for you Eve.”
He whispered then smiled, showing off his long fangs.
