Chapter 1
Theresa was tired of being confined to the mansion. Alistair refused to
allow her to work even though he had disappeared. He hired a new Crane President
someone who was not Theresa to act in his place during his absence. She
began to walk the corridors of the mansion. It was so empty. It lacked home.
There were no feelings of warmth, no sense of belonging. It was more like
an institution. An hour later she found her way to the balcony where she
began to sing a song that she learned as a child. There were no words just
humming.
Theresa was lonely. She did not have Ethan or Jane. She did not live at
the mansion alone but she was still alone. Sure she had her son Little Ethan
but she did not have the companionship that she needed so desperately. Her
best friend Whitney had runaway from the humiliation that she suffered when
she discovered that she had an affair with her brother. Fox loved Whitney
but Whitney could not risk the child being Chad’s. She needed her friend.
Fox interrupted her thoughts.
“Still pining?” He questioned.
“No just. I am sad Fox. I mean I miss Whit. I have no love of my own and
I never have. Ethan claimed to love me once but more and more I see that
he never did. He doesn’t even love Gwen, not really.”
“What can I say the golden boy only loves himself and Ivy. He is used to
having everything handed to him. Even after it was discovered that he was
not a Crane he was welcomed back into the family. He has mother’s heart
and more of Julian’s than I ever had. He has always had Gwen loving him.
Then he met you and you loved him before you even met him. That is absolutely
crazy in and of itself.” Theresa nodded he was right about that.
“How are you feeling?” She asked him.
“I feel like I have been punched in the guts and kicked in the gonads at
the same time. She left me a letter Theresa a lousy letter. I want to hate
her.” He sighed shaking his head.
“Let’s go into the main room to have a couple drinks. You ease my pain
and I ease yours through the bending of an ear.” She smiled and he agreed.
Fox held his glass up to Theresa’s for a toast.
“What are we toasting?”
“Our pathetic lives. Let us finally learn our lessons.” The glasses clinked
together and the duo sipped their drink.
“As I was saying I hated her for a few days. Then I realized that hating
her was impossible because I love her so damn much. I feel like all the
love that I gave was for nothing. Did she ever love me Theresa?” He shook
his head looking to her for the answer that he desperately needed to hear.
Theresa did not want to lie to Fox. She believed that Whitney had grown
to love him but had other motives for getting involved with him. She thought
that Whitney wanted to get over Chad. So she searched for something, someone,
anything, anyone to help her with that. She needed validation. She needed
to know that she was not sick. That she can have a normal attraction to
a man. Everything that she thought she knew had been compromised. Her self
worth had been shattered along with her judgement.
“She loved you Fox. Maybe not as much as you love her but she loved you.”
Theresa admitted.
Neither person knew that they were being watched. He needed to get to the
bottom of the secrets of the house that Alistair built. He knew that Alistair
was a sinister man. However, he knew that he was not foolish. He had been
hired by someone at Crane but he had other plans. He had to wonder being
a bright man himself, why him? Was he that good or just underestimating an
old sinister man? He walked to his van and read his folder. He wondered if
any of the Crane children knew how the old man got his riches. Alistair was
dirty than a pig pen. Julian was no better. He had a change of face. Maybe
it was the beautiful doctor that made him change. Considering her shaky past
maybe she knew more than she let on. Maybe she was not as reformed as she
let on.
