Lost Cause, Chapter 15

“ So, I guess I’ll begin at the beginning.”
” I guess you will.”, Simone responded.
” Simone, it’s true. But that’s not the worst part.”
” There’s something worse than Mom being into booze and drugs?”
” Yes. Mom had a baby back then.”
” A BABY?!”
” Well, we might have a brother. “
“ Might?”
“ Mom was told that the baby died, a few hours after his birth. But, around a year ago, she found information that hinted that the baby had lived, but had been kidnapped.”
” Kidnapped? Whitney, this doesn’t make any sense. This sounds like a
soap
opera. How could Mom not know if her son was alive or not?”
” She believed what the doctors told her. Someone was working hard to
make sure
Mom believed her son was dead.”
” Who, Whitney? Who would be that cruel to Mom? Who would want her to
think
that her son was dead? That was so mean, I can’t even wrap my mind
around it. “
” Because Julian Crane is the father of her son.”
Simone looked at Whitney and processed it. “ JULIAN CRANE?...THE Julian Crane that Daddy hates with every fiber of his being? THAT Julian Crane?”
” She likes Daddy?”
” I dunno. I think it was more revenge than any true feelings for
Daddy.”
“ So, Liz shot Mom. How did they save Mom?”
” Daddy and Julian Crane worked together to get Mom.”
” They worked together?”
” I know….bizarre.”
“ I….I’m still processing this. It’s so much to handle. “
“ Yep.”
“ How’s Daddy?”
” I think the only thing he’s focused on right now is Mom. He’s worried
to
death about her. Watching him worry about her, it’s so obvious – he
still loves
Mom, despite finding out all of this about her.”
” It was in her past, right?”
” Well yeah. The singing and the alcohol and drugs are in the past.
But,
Simone, our brother is very much alive and in the present.”
” Wow. We have a brother. But you know,
finding this out about Mom is sort of a relief.”
Whitney hugged her sister. “ I’m going to find a nurse, and then I’m going to go get Daddy. He’s prayed a lot for you.” Whitney kissed her sister. “ We all have.”
Whitney
left the room, and Simone sat there, contemplating
about how things have changed.
