New Beginnings, Chapter 65
“ Grace, I have to thank you again for everything that you’ve done for me. I know it’s been hard for you to keep my secret.”
” Eve, it’s fine. I know things are hard for you now, and what are best friends
for?”
” Thanks.”
Grace went out front, and in a few minutes, Julian came into the store.
” Grace.”
” Julian.”
Julian closed the door and sat down on the sofa next to Eve.
” Hello, Eve.”
” Julian. A lot of things have happened.”
” Indeed.”
” I guess we’ll take first things first. Our son changing his name.”
” Did you know about it?”
” I didn’t. I was stunned. I didn’t even know it was on his mind. I knew
that he was getting more comfortable with you. But, changing his name was
such a strong step for him. Did he give you any reason?”
” Not specifics. It was like he thought it was ‘ time’, whatever that means.”
” I think, for him, this was a stepping stone on his way to fulfilling what
he thinks is his destiny. His destiny as your first-born son. He wants to
do you proud, Julian.”
” Do me proud? His existence does me proud, Eve.”
“ And then, to find out that your mother knew about
” I know.”
” Then it made me think, Julian…why didn’t tell us? Why didn’t she warn us?
If we had known…if we had known..” Eve began to cry. Julian reached in and
wiped away her tears.
” Oh Eve.”
Before they both knew it, they were kissing passionately. Eve’s fingers ran through Julian’s hair, and his hers. Eve had undone Julian’s tie, and was working on his shirt when she pushed Julian away.
” Wh…what the hell are we doing?”
” Um…”
” Oh my God. I’m married. And pregnant! What was I doing?”
” Eve…”
” No Julian. You have to go. We can’t see one another anymore.”
” Eve, no..”
” Julian. I can’t see you anymore.”
Eve was sobbing with her head in her hands. Julian got up.
” Alright, Eve. I won’t try and meet with you again. I’ll just call you if
there’s anything about
Julian left, and Eve was still crying.
As
” Julian, what’s wrong? You haven’t been this drunk in ages. What’s wrong?”
” Why does anything have to be wrong?”, Julian slurred.
” Julian….talk to
” She doesn’t want to see me anymore.”
” She doesn’t want to see you anymore? Who?”
Julian waited awhile before answering quietly. “ Eve.”
” Eve doesn’t want to see you anymore?”
” No.”
” Ok….I’m confused. What happened?”
” What happened? She doesn’t want to see me anymore.”
” You told me that, Julian. But, I want to know WHY? I thought that you all
were getting along really well since the truth about
” It’s been good. But, then today…”
” Today what? Julian, what happened?”
” She…um…I….um….we..um…..”
” What?”
” We kissed.”
” Kissed?”
” Yes, kissed.”
“ So, you kissed her, Julian. She’s a married woman who probably didn’t appreciate the advances.”
” It…it wasn’t like that! Eve kissed me back!”
“ I know when a woman reciprocates my ‘advances’,
” Julian…she’s married and pregnant.”
” Don’t you think I know that? It’s just…”
” What?”
” Never mind. Go home,
” Julian…”
“ Go home.”
” Go away,
” Oh Julian. It never occurred to me…..I thought you saw Eve as the mother
of your son. You never got past her, did you? She’s been in your heart all
along, hasn’t she?”
Julian took another gulp of his scotch. “ Give
Julian took her hand and kissed it. “ You know, after all the horrible things I’ve done to you, I don’t deserve your compassion.”
” Nonsense. You’re trying to be a better person, and I love you for it. I
wish you weren’t so unhappy, Julian.”
” Don’t worry about me. I’ll get past it. Just need a little time to wallow,
and I’ll be fine. You can go.”
” I can stay with you.”
” No. I need to be alone.”
” Ok.”
At the Russell House, in the master bedroom, while TC slumbered soundly,
Eve sobbed quietly in her pillow.
