Some Loves Never Die

Chapter 1 Opposites Attract

If you happened to be a red-blooded man who could appreciate a woman's good looks you would love to cast your eyes on her for sure. But for those
men who can relate to and realize that women are more than a fine body and beautiful head of long black hair you would definitely enjoy meeting
her. The "her" that I am referring to is Dr. Ellen Burgess. She was a tall, lean, gorgeous black woman in her mid-thirties with thick, long
black hair. Her neat little shape made many a man weak in the knees. Her husband who died many years ago was never far from her thoughts. She
yearned for someone who would be real in his dealings with her and not merely try to "run a game" on her. She was no one's bed-warmer.

She never was and didn't plan to start now! "I'm so tired of the rat-race. All men want is a quick roll in hay, but I'm not that kind of woman.
When and IF I decide to get involved again he will have to be special. I have to know that he loves me for me, not because I'm easy on the eyes!"

Ellen tossed her long black hair to the side and shook her head as she looked up and saw the clearest brown eyes she had ever seen staring back at her. "Hello. I'm Matt Harmon. How do you do?" He was quite taken with her stunning good looks as any man would be. Ellen has seen many men in wheelchairs before but never one that was as handsome as he. His piercing eyes bore through her soul at his very first glance. She didn't
know what to make of him. Matt couldn't tell if she was looking at HIM or his chair.

"It's nice to meet you. I'm Dr. Ellen Burgess, Emergency Room Coordinator." Their eyes met and neither of them could deny it. There was an undenyable connection. Each of them felt it! Matt didn't want to reveal too much about himself to her, not yet.

One of the doctors was watching as he spoke to Ellen. "Well, well, well! You can stick your eyes back in your head now Matt. Don't even think about it! Ellen Burgess is as hard and cold as they come. Since her husband died 10 years ago she hasn't given a man the time of day. Her love is herwork and that's it! Many a man has had his head brought to him on a silver platter for even attempting to relate to her."

Dr. Joe Scanlon says to Matt, who isn't buying this "hard hearted Hannah" routine of his. "Well were these guys even suitable to ask her out? Were they on her professional level? Did they have anything to even offer her? A woman like that you have to have something to offer her other than just a wild ride in the sack! She could get that anywhere! To even think that all she could offer is what I'm looking at is insulting to her. She could stimulate me with witty and urbane conversation. I don't blame her for turning down those jokers! She looks so familiar to me. I knew someone who looked like her a long time ago. But that was such a long time ago that it's a wonder that I haven't forgotten her myself. But how could I? Do you ever forget your first love?" Matt smiles as she
walks down the hallway to her office.

Joe shakes his head. "Well YOU might have a chance at breaking through her steel-plated armor but it will be tough." Matt goes to the pediatric wing to read to the children in the AIDS unit. He spends four days a week at General Hospital
voluteering his time to help the children. They all relish his visits.

He always seems to remember everyone's birthday and he always has a gift for each child every Friday. But it's the quality of his visits that
they cherish most, not the gifts that he brings. His time and encouragement is what they need most and he always delivers.

Ellen is in her office when someone knocks on her door. "Come in." She says as her mother, Alice enters. "Hi there. Are you free for lunch."

Ellen hops up from her chair."As a matter of fact I am. Let's go to the Port Charles Grill. I have GOT to tell you something." They finally get
their food when Alice breaks the silence.

"Well? Spill it!" Ellen doesn't know what to say or where to begin.

"Mother just listen to what I have to say. Don't interrupt alright. Here goes. I met this man today and he's so different in so many ways that I'd run out of time trying to tell you, but there's something about him that I DO like. For one thing, he's white and for another he uses a wheelchair. But when he looked at me mother, I felt so strange. It was like I was sixteen again and it was starting all over!"

Alice knew what she was referring too. "It was
if I knew him when he looked into my eyes. I felt the same way as I did when I first saw Eric for the first time. Mother I haven't felt like this in so long that it frightens me."

Her mother knowing what she needs to hear comforts her. "Ellen, what troubles you so? What is it that bothers you about this man? Is it that you trust yourself around him because that's what I'm hearing. It sounds to me that this Matt
person, evokes such feelings that you are afraid to be alone with him. If that's the case, watch your step. Don't put yourself in a position to
be around him when it will be just the two of you." Ellen knows that her mother is right. They have their dinner and go home.

In his elegant bedroom at his estate, Matt's mind wonders to a time when he was truly happy. He was 16 and a Junior in High School and he was every girls dream guy. His parents were rich and prominent and he was the cat's meow! Tall, handsome and the very smart. Only one person was as smarter than he, She was Elise Baxter. The daughter of a middle-classed family on the
other side of the tracks. Her father and mother always had hopes that their daughter would achieve things that they only dreamed of. Elise was a beauty but was always more interested in her studies. She had long hair and the most beautiful smile that Eric had ever seen in his life.

The year was 1983 and they were both Juniors at Sampson High School and the teacher had assigned groups of two to work together on their Physics
projects. They had been paired together and Eric came to her table to begin work.

"Hi. I'm Eric Mancusi. My family and I just moved here from Italy a few days ago. I think that we will make an "A" on our assignment. Don't you?" He said to her looking at her smooth golden brown skin which was so beautiful to him that he almost reached out to kiss her hand, but he thought better of it. Elise was taken with him too, but she knew that this kind of thing was taboo.

People who dared to go against the grain were ALWAYS dealt with severly. In small southern cities race-mixing was not tolerated. Those that dared to be different and stand up for what
they believed in were always shunned or even worse made a public mockery of and reproached by everyone including teachers and the principal. So
no one ever dared to do it except Eric. He and Elsie worked many hours on their project. He had his own car, a brand new 1983 Mustang so he
came to her house whenever they did their work for their Physics project. Her parents were always in the next room where every word could
be heard. While they worked Elise reached across the table and picked up a marker. When she sat down again he quietly placed his hand on hers.
This was private, this was their moment in time.

Her parents would never hear his heart beat wildly at the moment that his hand touched hers or when her eyes met his that told him that SHE too felt the same about him. They would never see what she saw in his eyes that told of how much
he longed to spent time alone with her, not to try and make her do something that she'd later be sorrow for, because he respected her too much to do something like that. He didn't want to sneak around with her in the dark. He wanted everyone to know that she was his and he was hers. He passed a piece of paper to her. "I'll take you home tomorrow after school." She nodded with a smile. And then he went home.

All day long, Matt thought of Elise and how much he wanted to take her home. He also thought of how it would be to be near her and to smell her sweet perfume even closer. School was finally over and all of the kids had gone. He waited and waited, but she wasn't there! "Where is she? Elise where are you?" Matt was about to drive off when he saw her come out of the building.

He opened the door for her and she got inside. "Hi. I thought that maybe you had changed your mind. I had hoped that you hadn't though. I could hardly keep my eyes off you in English or in any
of our other classes. Do you want to go for a ride?" He asks her.

She's still sort of nervous. She's never lied to her parents before. "I lied to my parents today. I can't do that again. I'll have to tell them
something, but right now I'm here with you." This made Eric ever prouder than ever that she had chosen him out of all of the boys in school.

"It's been two months since I've moved to the states and to this school. You are the only girl that I want to spend time with. The other girls
are so phony and plastic but you are real. They reach a park and Eric pulls over and they talk. It's secluded and peaceful. Eric feels that
the time is right. He puts his arm around her and leans in close and whispers in her ear. "I've always drempt of saving my very first kiss
for a very special girl and you are that girl. May I kiss you Elise?"

She knew that this moment would come one day. He brought her head up to look into her eyes. "I've never kissed anyone before either but I always
hoped that it would be with you." He smiles and looks into her eyes hoping that it was as easy as it looked on t.v. He closed his eyes and
she closed hers and then before they knew it their lips met in a soft and moist kiss that was full of wonder and innocence. The shockwaves
that shook his body made him hold her a little tighter and kiss her a little deeper and with more ferver. Elise felt it too! Something had a
hold on them and they liked this new found sensation. His fingers found her hair and touched it as he held her close and his mouth closed over
hers. She pulled away slowly feeling that if she hadn't they might wind up in a position that would embarass her and her family. Honor and
dignity were paramount in her household.

Eric wanted to be with her in the most private way, but he knew that she was not that kind of girl. He began to think that if they were together what would be the harm if no one knew it except him. That's how girls got a "reputation" when they slept around with a lot of boys. Then boys kept notes and discussed her among themselves. But he'd never do that to her, not the girl of his dreams. He loved her and wanted to share all that he had with her. He
wanted to be her to be the first girl that he would share his most private self with. He wanted to be the one whose name she called in the
throes of passion and no one else! He wanted to kiss her golden brown skin and see how beautiful she looked in her natural state.

He alone wanted to see her in all of her natural glory over and over again. When he looked at her he smiled. "That was better than I ever imagined. Your lips are so sweet. I have to have more. Just one more kiss Elise. I'm hooked now! I must have at least two kisses a day just to stay alive."
They both laughed, then his hand on her cheek changed the mood of things. This time Eric's mouth roved hers in such a way that made her
fingers tingle and his too!

The kiss took on a whole new meaning. It was a wet, deep kiss that explored every inch of her mouth. He loved kissing her full lips. He lightly nibbled them which excited him so much when cried out in a soft voice. "Oooh Eric!" Elise had no idea how much this excited him. She too wanted more but knew that this would have to do! He
could kiss her all day! Because each time was different and it was all so new to them. He ventured to kiss her long lovely throat. As his mouth trailed down he opened her blouse and kissed her graceful throat and then nibbled it lightly as well.

"Eric. Eric" She said softly as he kissed her. "Oh Elise, when you say my name it drives me wild!" She pulled away slowly and opened her eyes. "Eric, I don't think that we should do that again. It felt TOO good!" Eric smiled and kissed her nose. "I know because I wanted to feel you against me without my clothes on. I dream about you every night and day even when my eyes are open."

He notices that she has turned around. "Elise, I'm sorry. If I offended you I didn't mean too. I respect you to the highest it's just that when
you love someone you want to be as close to that person as you can be. I'm sorry and I won't mention it again." She turns around to face him
and she smiles this time. He reaches into his pocket and takes out something. "Will you be my girlfriend? As long as you wear this bracelet
we'll be together."

She's overjoyed as he puts it on her wrist. It is
made of rich Italian 24 kt. gold and it says "Elise & Eric 4 ever" and on the inside it says "May 25, 1983 our beginning." Later on Elise gave
him a necklace made of smooth sea shells which spelled out her name.

"I'll always keep this close to my heart, just as you ARE my heart." But the very next day, he had his accident. His brother shot him on the
orders of his father and he was sent away to be in the Witness Protection Program. And his Elise was left alone wondering what happened to him. He wrote letters to her but they were never delivered and his heart was broken. Matt came back to himself as he heard a page on the
loudspeaker.

"Well she's not Elise, but she has the same maddened effect on me that Elise had. Wow! I wonder whatever happened to her? I wonder
where we would be now if I hadn't left? Well, I'll always hold you near and dear to my heart Elise, for you were my first love."
