Chapter 3 Back Down Memory Lane

There is a knock at the door and the butler answers it. "Dr. Ellen Burgess, sir." He announces formally. He escorts her to the formal
living room where Matt is sitting on a beautiful black, velvet love seat. He's been waiting for her to join him. Ellen looks around at his
massive estate. She sits down on a nearby chair. "Please, sit here." He pats the seat next to him. Ellen smiles uncontrollably. "Why didn't you
answer my letters? I wrote telling you of my accident and for you not to worry about me and that in time I would come back to you! I waited and waited but I never received a reply. Do you know how much difficult it was for me not to have you by my side when all I could think of was you
as I lay on my back all those months? I drempt of those times that we promised to share our lives with each other and to always be there no matter what. I have always a had soft spot in my heart for you, always."

Matt is choking back the tears as he feels himself about to break-down. Ellen touches his hand and he looks down and kisses it. He sees the
bracelet that he gave her 16 years ago. His eyes widen as she sees him recognize it. "I've always kept this. I would look at it after my husband died and wonder how you were and if you were happy? Whenever I looked at it, I would remember our kiss. That was something that were shared so long ago, but I still remember it as if it were yesterday." Matt was dressed in slacks, a long sleeved dress shirt with a tie. Ellen is trying to divert her attention elsewhere because she wants to hold him, just like she did 16 years ago, when she had her very first kiss. Many girls had done more than just kiss by that age, but not Elise Baxter. Ellen moved away from him where it was safe.

"So you kept the bracelet? I'm so glad. So when did yu change your name? I've always
thought that Elise was such a beautiful name."

She turns to him now. "I didn't change it. My name is Ellen Elise. It was Baxter and now it's Burgess. I always that Ellen was such an "old-lady name" so when I started school I told the teachers to address me by my middle name-Elise. It's funny but now, I perfer to use my first name. It sounds more masterful." Matt's eyes are falling for her all over again. The love for her is still there, for he had always nurtured it.

"So your own family did this to you? I'm so sorry that I couldn't have been there. I
would have stuck by you. You know that don't you?" Matt nods in agreement as he stares out of the big picture window. He always wears the necklace that she gave him inside of his shirt next to his heart.

"Matt, when I saw you yesterday, I felt that same connection as I did when I saw you 16 years ago. Your eyes have not changed even though you look so different now. I couldn't put my finger on it but I told mother about it." Matt smiles. "I would love to see her again. She was always so nice to me." He swallows hard. "What I couldn't tell you is that my father was in the mafia and he ordered a hit on me. My own brother shot
me down in cold blood and that's why I'm in this chair. My father died five years ago and my mother had a clause in the will that made everything rivert back to me, upon his death. I shared everything with her and she lives her with me. He tried to kill me and now all that he worked so hard for is mine. Look at the irony in that! His millions are
mine--70 if you want to know, but who's counting."

Ellen can't believe this! She's trying not to show just how surprised she really is. Matt
knows that's she's not a gold-digger. He wouldn't have told her if he thought that she was after his money. Matt looks at her hungry eyes they look at every inch of her body. Her smile had once again capivated him heart. Finally they move into the dining room to eat. The butler placed her meal on the table and then his at the other end of the banquet size table that seats 30. When the butler comes back into the room Matt
instructs him to take him food to the other in of the table where she is. He joins her. They laugh and talk and enjoy the sound of each others voice.

"Ellen, we've always been able to be honest with one another. Truthfully, does my being in this chair make a difference to you? Some women can't get past it. If it does please be honest with me. Don't toy with my emotions because that was never your style. I can do everything that any other man can do except walk. I need to know."

Ellen looks up from her prime rib and fastens her gaze upon him. "What do you feel
right now? Does it FEEL like I'm just faking it? What is your heart telling you? What are my eyes telling you?" Matt moves even closer to her and she moves away from the table to make room for his chair because she knows what's going to happen next. She can feel it! Matt takes her in his arms and kisses her. They both have a look of satisfaction on their faces.

"So you don't have anyone special and neither do I. What about lunch tomorrow?" Ellen shakes her head. "Well I'm never certain when I'll have a chance to actually have lunch. I could call you and see if you had time or not." Matt gives her his home number and his private cell phone number as well. "Why don't you give me a call on my cell phone and I'll be here. I'll be waiting to hear from you. They talk a little more and then he sees her to her car. "Goodnight ELise. May I still call you Elise?" He asks as his eyes see the woman who has always held a piece of his heart.

"Yes, but since you changed your name and I didn't, I'll call you Matt. I call you soon." Ellen gives him her card with her private cell phone number and home number as well. This makes him so happy. He sits outside until her car is out of sight. Mrs. Mancusi enters the room.

"Who did you dine with tonight? I smell a woman's perfume in here and the maid doesn't wear perfume on duty. He tells her with whom dined and how he met her. "Matt this is wonderful. I can clearly see that you are quite fond of her just as you were 16 years
ago. Some things never change. I would love to see her again. And she's a doctor too? How wonderful! I always knew that she would go far in life." Matt retires for the evening. As he prepares for bed his only thoughts are of HER!

The next day while she's at work, she checks her mail when someone walks up to her. "Please sign here. This is for you." Ellen signs the receipt. Just then Eve, Joe and Karen walk up. Ellen opens it to reveal a diamond tennis bracelet. The stones are large enough to choke a horse! "Well! Who gave you that and does he want to adopt me?" Eve asks jokingly.

"This came from an old friend of mine from high school. It turns out that he's very wealthy. I can't accept this and he knows better!" Ellen looks at the card. "Thank you for a terrific and memorable evening. Matt." Eve read the card over her shoulder.

"Ellen! Is Matt Harmon the old friend of yours from school? I along with almost every woman on staff has tried to nab him, but with no luck. And he's an old friend from high school, you say?" Eve is on a fishing expedition, she wants the details. "Ellen, what was Matt like in high school. Did you know him before his accident or after?" Karen asks.

"I knew him before and he was quite charming and very galant. He never said or did anything that would disrepect me or my family." They all start to wonder now, why she's bringing family into it, unless he was a CLOSE friend. "Ellen, just how close were you two anyway?" Eve asks. Ellen walks away leaving them on pins and needles.

"She was girlfriend. My first and ONLY love. She held my heart captive without us ever being phyical. Nowadays that's unheard of, but it's true. What we had transcended color and the confines of a mere physical relationship. We touched the other's heart, not their bodies." Eve and the other's have heard more than enough. They realize how much he cares for her. They all leave them share some time alone. Matt looks at her with the same look that he did the first time that he laid eyes on her. "I'm glad that you didn't tell them and that I had the chance too! The look on Eve and Karen's faces was priceless. Are you available for lunch?" Ellen leaves with him and they ride in his black
2000 Corvette. "I didn't want to go in the limo today, because I was feeling selfish after last night." Ellen looks at him strangely.

"Selfish. What do you mean?" Matt looks into her eyes and knows that this woman doesn't realize the power that she has over him. She could ask of him what she would and he'd do it gladly. He cared for her that much! "Last night I shared you with the maid, and the butler but not today. I want you all to myself! That chaffeur has wondering eyes too! NO sir! You're mine!" Ellen breaks into laughter and so does he. "I've
missed your warm laugh. You always knew how to make me feel good. I'm so glad that you back in my life again, Elise."

They arrive at a park and have a picnic. Matt looks around and his mind goes back to his first kiss, which was also hers as well. "You know, this park reminds me where we were when I kissed you for the first time." A wicked smile comes to his lips as he puts his food down on the blanket beside them and moves closer to her. Ellen wants to rekindle this flame as much as he does, but it feels GREAT to be pursued after so
many years. Her eyes instinctive close and she feels the soft touch of his lips on hers. Then seconds later, she feels the growing urgency that his mouth has caused. It has gone from a gentle kiss to that of one of which had evoked passionate responses from both of them. Now her hands roam his back anxiously and his fingers clutch her back and his lips kiss her neck and quickly shower heated kisses along her throat. Ellen
realizes what's happened.

"This is that day in 1983 all over again!" She says to herself. "Matt, we'll better not do that again. It was too good." He laughs at her. "Wait a minute, we've been there and done that. But maybe it wouldn't hurt to do it again!" He says with the sound of
his laughter filling the park. "Seriously Matt, I can't accept that diamond bracelet. I just can't!" Matt knows what's wrong. "You don't want people to think that you're a kept woman, right?" Ellen nods.

"All of the women in this town have run after me for years trying to get me to buy things for them and the one that I want to buy something for won't even accept it! Ellen you and I know what's going on between us. No one cares what the people will say or think as long as we have each other. Matt picks up the bracelet and fastens it to her wrist. " I love you Dr. Burgess and you'd better get used to it! Because I'm not going anywhere. We have a lot to catch up on!" He pulls her into another
heated embrace.
