Chapter 6 The Price Of Love

Ellen is at work about to finish her shift. She's inside of her office when she hears soft murmurs outside of her door. "Did you hear that rich
Dr. Harmon is getting married?" Gasps and sighs are heard. Another voice in the crowd, "To Dr. Burgess! It's all over the hospital. What does she have that I don't? I tried to grab him several times but no use! I mean I appealed to EVERY sense that he has, but he wasn't interested. Man, I wish that I was marrying him."

Still a new voice speaks out. "Well how far did you get? Were you two every close? Did he kiss you? Did he ever mention anything else like..."
Knowing what she's getting at, "We were never THAT close. I wish that we had been because then I could have at least said that I was pregnant and maybe he would have given me some hush money to keep the whole thing quiet!"

Being fed up with the whole thing, "Did you see the rock that she's wearing? I couldn't get the time of day, but she gets the rock of Gibraltar! Furthermore I heard them talking and he has already made provisions in his will that even if they divorce that she'll still be taken care of, children or not! What kind of man is he? Then he turned to her and said 'I don't plan on you going anywhere though.' Well for that amount of money you'd have to knock me in the head to get me away
from him! I just want to know why we couldn't get him and the first time that he lays eyes on her he's so smitten! What's the story behind that?
Or maybe he just likes THOSE kind of women. Well no matter. She'll have him and we won't! Did you see them together yesterday? I was just sick!
I've never seen so many of his teeth as I did when he smiled at her."

Suddenly the talking stops. Then there's a knock at her door. Ellen is furious! She had no idea that the females interested in him were so
petty and jealous! "A man in position must have women after him all of the time. I just hope that THEY remember who has him and get over it!"

Someone from the lab brought her some papers to sign. She is determined not to let anyone dampen her spirit. Ellen checks her mail. Going
through it she opens a letter. "How you ever got him I'll never know but you won't be happy! It's just a fling! He'll tire of you and toss you
away like an old shoe! You may have him now, but not for long. It won't last! You should stay with your own KIND!" Ellen never thought that she
would be getting hate mate mail!

"This is the last draw! What I do and who I love is no one's concern except mine! I will not defend my decision to love him. I had enough of that in high school!" She marches over to Matt's house and shows him the letter.

"I'm so sorry that you had to see something so petty. It's only the rantings of very
small-minded person. If they had so much to say why not say it to my face. They would rather hid behind a cloak of secrecy because they're afraid to show their face. This is just the price tag that comes with loving each other." Matt goes to the trash-can and retreives a handful of hate mail. Ellen begins to read one and then stops.

"This is where it belongs. I love you and no matter what anyone says I want us to spend
our lives together. We're no longer teenagers. We don't have our parents to worry about anymore. Everyone else can fall off the edge of earth if
they want to! You should get used to it because we'll be called every name in the book and then some, but as long as we stick together and always love each we can make it! You're more important to me than what anyone can dish out! A love like ours only comes along once in a lifetime. I love you Elise and I'm going to have a guard outside of your apartment night and day until we're married." This makes Ellen smile. "I love you too," she says feeling safe and secure in his arms. Matt pulls her closer as she nestles her head closer against his chest. Matt kisses
her forehead. The price of their love is high but it's a price that they will gladly pay.
