Twisted, Chapter One

Chapter 1
On the porch of her house, Eve opened her purse for her nightly ritual.
She downed the small shot of vodka and shook her head. Before her hand touched
the knob, she tried to clear her head. These past few months had been horrible
for her. When she thought the love of her life had been murdered, she went
through a mixture of emotions. The first being absolute glee. Then a horrible
sinking feeling set in and grief took over. Now he was back and in her face
everyday at work. His eyes pleading with her, full of love and waiting for
a forgiveness she didn’t think she could give him. He was always in heart,
whether or not she wanted to admit. Lately, he had been in her head. It
would be so complicated except for her husband.
“I love T. C. I love T.C. I LOVE T.C.” The last part of the ritual, if
she said it enough times, then it could erase her love. She knew she was
fooling herself but in order to smile in her husband’s face, she had to
lie behind her back. At least sleep would come soon, and in sleep came Julian.
“Don’t you ever come here again, Crane!” T.C. was two breaths away from
Julian’s face. Eve could see the veins in his neck. She suddenly wished she
had room in her purse for a double.
“I came to see Eve. I’m not leaving until you let me speak to her so get
out of my face.” Julian’s voice was calm but Eve knew he had been drinking.
His body was ready for a fight. He stepped closer to T.C., he wanted a fight.
Just then, before Eve could open her mouth, Whitney brushed past her and
went over to her father. Eve could feel the ice come off of her daughter.
She did not know why Whitney suddenly hated her but that hate was a dark
cloud over her days.
Whitney rushed to her father, ignoring her (overused derogatory adjective)
of a mother. She saw Julian kiss her mother two days ago at the hospital.
She expected Eve to slap him away but instead she responded. She kissed
him back passionately and then they held each other. Whitney could not believe
the nerve of her mother. And she was just going to stand here while her
husband was ready to beat up her boyfriend. She was suddenly glad that she
decided to rebel against her mother’s stupid rule about singing.
“Daddy, don’t.! Mom is right there. If Mr. Crane has anything to say, he
can tell her now.” Whitney touched her father’s arm with a tenderness that
made him forget about the Crane scum standing in front of him.
“Go ahead, Crane. Tell her whatever it is you came to stay.”
“It’s a private matter about the hospital.” Julian gave him a look as if
to say ‘leave’. T.C. thought about kicking his ass just then but he knew
that one day Julian would start pressing charges.
“Its okay, honey. I’ll walk Julian outside and call him a cab from my cell
phone. I’ll be right back.” She felt so low at this very moment. A part
of her was jumping up and down at the thought of being alone with him again.
A part of her lived for these stolen moments when his arms were around her
and his body was close to hers. The vodka was making her bold. She quickly
shook those thoughts out of her head and took Julian’s arm. Leading him
to the door. Whitney gave her mother a sharp look and patted her father’s
arm.
Outside, away from the eyes of her family, Eve hugged Julian. She just
needed to feel him.
“Oh, my darling, you don’t want to get next me right now. I can’t control
what I might do.” He said softly in her ear. His hands roamed her back and
his smelled her hair. She was the love of his life. He could not believe
that she made the first move. He loved the feel her body. Her curves under
his hands drove him crazy. He was overcome with the urge to make love her
right there on the steps.
She felt him stiffen and hugged him tighter. Her hands went under his jacket
and then brought his face down to hers. They kissed long and hard. Her tongue
sought his and elicited a groan. She pushed them both deeper into the darkness
so no one could see as she toppled him on the ground. He was shocked at
the fall but quickly regained his bearings and squeezed her rear, which
made her laugh. When she raised her head, he kissed her neck. His hands were
quickly under her skirt and that’s when she put a halt to things.
“We’ve got to stop. You’ve been drinking.” Eve rose up to a sitting position,
which wasn’t much help to Julian as she now had him straddled between her
legs. He didn’t want her move, he tried not to point this out.
“You’ve been drinking too. I see what you do before you come into your
house every night. Darling, I can taste the vodka on you. I should come
by every night after your ‘ritual’ if it makes you this wild.” He remembered
a time when she was much wilder. It was nothing for them to have sex in
public places and on top of every car he owned. His favorite memory was
the one time at the mall when she…
“Stop remembering sex. I know that look in your eye. I only had a shot.
I don’t know why I did what I did. I just…damn it Julian.” She stood up and
brushed off her skirt. She could not believe her boldness as of late. It
was just that every time he came near her, her body felt like it was on fire.
Her marriage bed had been so cold lately. She knew she held part of the
blame but most of it was her sister, Liz. Earlier that day, she confirmed
what Eve had known for months. Her sister was sleeping with her husband.
It didn’t really upset her though. Her first feeling was of gladness; for
a few seconds she thought of dropping T.C. and running to be Julian. But
she knew she couldn’t.
“Its just as well you got off of my lap, love. I have to tell you something
about our past. Something I think you should know and that I’m looking into.
I have been looking into it for sometime.”
Eve shuddered when he brought up the past. There were so many mixed feelings.
She loved him more than she loved anything or anyone 25 years ago. Her life
was for the better and the worse because of him. He introduced her to the
alcohol and the drugs that almost destroyed her but he loved her in a way
that made her soul shake. When he left her pregnant and alone, she hated
him. Sure, she was hurt and drowning but once that feeling pasted, she hated
him. She loved their child growing in her womb and separated him from his
father. Her hateful aunt reminded her everyday why she hated Julian Crane.
When the baby was born stillborn, Eve hated Julian even more.
“What about our past? You want me to forgive you, but you keep reminding
why I find it so hard to do so.” Eve turned her back to him so that he couldn’t
see her eyes. Even all these years later, he knew how to read her.
“Our son didn’t die, Eve.” He knew he couldn’t slowly break this to her.
He knew that he needed to lay out of his cards to the woman he loved. The
woman he destroyed.
“What the hell are you saying? Wait…how did you know it was a he?” Eve
never told Julian anything about their child. She refused to even after
all the years had passed and Julian seemed to change back into the man she
loved. The man he was before he left her and began a life of what could
only be described as evil.
