Chapter 27
Pilar felt the tears streaming down her face. Her daughter had ‘come out’
to her about loving Simone and it felt as though her world had just been
yanked from under her. She was already depressed about Noah and now this.
The way Paloma looked at her when she reacted to the news chilled Pilar to
her soul.
“WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU LOVE SIMONE?” Pilar screamed and held her hand in
a tight fist to keep from slapping her daughter.
“You want to slap me, Mama? Go ahead. You didn’t raise me, you don’t love
me…it won’t hurt.” Paloma fought to keep the tears out of her voice. She
had planned to tell her parents all at once but her father could not be found.
She now knew what it was like for her siblings growing up: looking for a
father who would rather be elsewhere.
“I’m not going to slap you. It’s just a shock. A terrible shock. Have
you thought about this? Did she trick you? Brainwash you?”
“Wow. She defended you. When I would go on and on about what a horrible
person you are, she would come to your defense. Did you know that? She thinks
the world of you. You are like a second mother to her and here you are…accusing
her of foul things. She didn’t trick me, I’m not brainwashed. I LOVE her.
I LOVE HER!” Paloma felt like throwing something at her mother. She could
feel her insides burn as each tear dropped down her mother’s face.
“You have to give me time! I have so many things going on and this is…”
Pilar calmed down.
“This is what? What do you have going on, Mama? What?” Paloma forced herself
across the room to hold her mother. She had broken down on the floor.
“I’m pregnant.” She whispered right before she wept in her daughter’s
arms.
Sheridan laid down on her bed and thought of Martin and all that would
happen soon. The ceremony was tomorrow and she could not wait. She picked
out the perfect dress that her lover would love her in. She patted her stomach
again and could not wait.
“Sheridan?” Katherine noted that the door was open and decided to walk
in to her daughter’s cottage.
“Don’t you knock?” Sheridan rose her from her bed slowly and looked her
mother full in her eye. The thought that her and Martin slept in the bed
that her mother was looking at, gave her a thrill.
“I’m sorry. The doors were open. How are you doing? We haven’t spoken
much since..”
“Since you left my life making me think you were dead.”
“I never faked my death.”
“No, Father did that for you. At least he lets you know first off that
he’s evil. I can at least respect that fact about him. He doesn’t play nice
and he doesn’t pretend.”
“He’s tried to kill you many times. Don’t tell me that you respect him
over me.” This was not going at all how Katherine wanted it to go. Martin
had left her and she wanted to know if maybe Sheridan knew where he was. She
missed him desperately.
“At least he showed an interest.” She shrugged her shoulders. She hated
her father and talking about him was upsetting the baby.
“Have you seen Martin?” Katherine decided to get to the point. She had
tried before to get through to her daughter and had no success then. She
didn’t know why she thought she would have some now.
“No. I haven’t seen your lover. Julian told me that he left you. How sad,
eh? The man who left five children and wife to run away with you now dumps
you. That’s got to hurt but you had to see that coming, Mother.”
“That was hurtful. You are looking kind of puffy. Are you okay? How are
things with Luis and Antonio?”
“It’s worked out, don’t fret. And I am not puffy. I have gained a few
pounds but if it pleases you, Mother, I will go on a diet.” Sheridan started
to direct her mother towards the door.
“Well, I’ll see you tomorrow. At Julian’s ridiculous idea of a vow renewal
ceremony to that horrible wench.” Katherine knew her daughter wanted her
out. She shuddered when she thought of what her son was doing.
“Yep. Horrible thing. Maybe your ex-boyfriend will be there. Free food
and all.” She shut the door behind her and sat on the floor.
“Tomorrow, little one…this will be over. We will be with your daddy and
the tell everyone that ever hurt us to suck it.” She smiled once again.
Theresa held Jane close to her while she slept. Little Ethan was laid
out on the floor beneath her. She let her hand stroke his hair. Everything
was turning out perfectly. Fox strolled into the room with that same careless
ease that made her fall for him in the first place.
“You’ve got your family back. I can tell you are happy.” There was something
dark in his eyes that gave Theresa a start but she didn’t want to wake the
baby.
“Come here.” She said softly and watched as he seemed to glide towards
her. He gently eased her up off of the couch with her daughter in tow. He
then placed her back down while he slipped under her. Now this was perfect.
“You aren’t going to keep Ethan from his daughter forever are you? I love
you Theresa and I understand that he hurt you but…”
“Are you afraid I’m using Jane and you as a tool to lure Ethan to me?
I’m not mad, I’ve done worse things but tell me.”
“It’s crossed my mind.”
“I love you. I love my daughter. I don’t love Ethan Crane anymore and
I barely still hate Gwen. I got my daughter back because she is mine and
no one steals what is mine and gets away with it. They stole this angel
from me and I got her back. Later down the line she will know her father
and he will help raise her. I’m still too angry about all the time they
took from me.” She gave her daughter a soft squeeze.
“I know you love me. I just needed to hear it. When can we go public?
I want to hold your hand so that all of Harmony can see me.” Fox brushed
her long hair and suddenly felt tired and relieved. He had been so worried
that she would leave once she got her daughter but hearing now—she sounded
clearer than she had ever been.
“Tomorrow at Julian’s ceremony. Trust me?”
“Always.”
Eve turned around in the dress Chase had made for her. It looked fabulous
without over doing it. It was red and simple with a daring neckline. It also
showed off her legs and hugged her hips.
“This is a very sexy dress, Chase.”
“Well, it’s the most tone down one I’ve made in a while. I’m usually all
about flare but this will look great on you.”
“Well thank you. I love it. Yours looks nice as well.” She looked at Chase
in his dress. It sparkled when he moved and the bottom seemed to float around
him when he turned. It showed off his fit figure without over doing it. The
neckline didn’t plunge too low but it did plunge.
“Thank you, Eve. I love it too. It was my first dress. I can’t believe
it still fits. Are you sure about this?”
“About what? Showing up at the love of my life’s vow renewal ceremony
with the world’s most beautiful drag queen on my arm?”
“Well…yes. I love you, Eve. I would not want to shame you I am more than
a drag queen, you know.” Chase lowered his eyes. He could not stop thinking
of her as his mother and it gave him a glorious feeling. He loved everything
about her and the thought that he would bring her shamed killed him.
“Chase you could never shame me. I know you are more than a drag queen.
You are a wonderful human being that made me this knock out dress. I know
I haven’t known you for very long but I love you Chase. You are beautiful
inside and out. Sometimes you remind me of Julian.” Eve smiled at him. She
had this connection to him that she could not explain but he made her feel
so good.
“I love you too, Eve. Thank you for the human being comment but I meant
that I’m a lawyer as well. I have a small practice so if you ever need any
legal help, I’m here.” Chase was suddenly proud that he had this to offer
to his mother.
“No way! That is great, Chase. I must see your office one day. We will
be very high society and lunch. Imagine us, a doctor and lawyer. I tell you,
when I was younger and singing, I never thought that this would be my life.”
Eve didn’t think about her younger days too much but the stories of her
and Julian seemed to entertain Chase.
“Yes. We will definitely…lunch.” Chase smiled and felt a storm inside
him as he thought about the events that would have to happen the next day.
