Twisted, Chapter 3 (Eve's Family)

Chapter 3
Eve eyed Julian with suspicion. The past year had taught her that he wouldn’t
lie or bait her with something this serious. He knew how hard she took their
son’s death and how closely she kept that to her heart. She knew he wouldn’t
hurt her like this. Still, she slapped him.
“What the blue hell was that for?” He rubbed his cheek smiling. He hadn’t
been slapped by her in a while.
“Tell me more about our son.” She refused to apologize for the slap. Instead
she turned her back to him. She hoped that he would place his arms around
her waist and he did. She leaned back into the smell of him, God how she
loved his scent.
“I found out that he’s alive. I did some research, which was hard because
you wouldn’t tell me a blessed thing about the baby, and found out that Alistar
had heavy connections at the hospital you birthed our son. It would have
been nothing for him to bribe a nurse and tell you that our son was born
stillborn. I also found that within weeks of you giving birth there, a new
wing was added thanks to the Crane money. He had it named the “Garden of
Eden”. I think as his own personal joke. I’m still doing some fact checking
and hiring spies who won’t work for my father or report back to him. I think
we might find him, Eve.” He didn’t want to draw out the little details or
distract her like she was distracting him. He tightened his grip on her waist
before letting her go.
“Oh, Julian. I don’t know what to say. I’m so tired and full right now.
And mostly happy. I hope our son is alive. Oh, Julian!” She turned to face
him and gave him a deep long kiss. Placing her hands in his pockets, she
drew him even closer to her. She couldn’t describe what it felt to even think
for a moment of having a family with him. Their son was a living breathing
connection between them; he was their love personified. Who cared if finding
him would ruin her life?
“Eve, darling. I have to warn you, if you keep this up then we will be
on the grass and I won’t give a good damn who watches.” His eyes were as
dark as his voice with lust. He knew that one day, he would have her.
He would gladly take the beating from T.C and father if he could just…
“I know. It’s the vodka. I have to go in and face T.C. I’m going to tell
him that we argued about a doctor you wanted to bring in but I won because
your doctor was golly .” She laughed at the last word. She rarely cussed.
Julian laughed as well, he hadn’t heard a good swear word out of her mouth
in years.
“I don’t mind losing to you, my dear. I’ll go but I won’t give up on our
son….or us.” He knew one shot of vodka was not the cause of her passion for
him. He wasn’t the one lying to himself. Every time he stepped into a room,
he could feel her eyes on him and see that she wanted him. How T.C missed
it, he would never know.
“Goodnight.” Was all she said as she walked out of the darkness and onto
her porch. She reached into her own pocket and pulled out a shot sized bottle
vodka. She knew that Julian would be carrying it on him and took it out of
his pocket on their last kiss. When they were in love all those years ago,
he once told her that he kept a shot of vodka handy with him at all times
because he knew she loved it. She would always check his pockets, it warmed
her to think that he still thought of her. She smiled as she downed the
last shot of the night.
As she walked into her house, she was greeted by her eldest daughter.
Whitney met her mother at the stairs and gave her good hard slap across
the face.
“I saw you mother. I saw you with him two days ago and I saw you with
him just now. You were all over him. I can’t believe you are such a (overused
derogatory adjective) . I don’t even blame Julian, hell, he’s not the one
who promised to love and respect my father. He’s just grabbing some easy
piece of ..” Whitney’s harsh words were cut short by her mother’s return slap.
“Look, little girl, what you saw was not you think it is. And I don’t
have to have to explain myself to you. I will be damned if my daughter,
living in my house and eating my food is going to not only slap me but get
into my business? Now, you will march up those stairs, you will go to sleep
and you will not tell your father a thing.”
Whitney couldn’t speak. She had never imagined that her whore of a mother
would actually have the nerve to slap her back. She looked in her mother’s
eyes and saw something different there. Over the years, T.C had been the
one who held the anger for both of them. When she finally came out about Chad,
her mother had stood quiet while T.C raged and threatened Chad’s life. The
woman standing before her now, eyes flashing, was the same woman who had
raised her.
“Fine.” With that, she stomped up the stairs and into her room to call
Chad.
Eve shook her head as she watched her skinny daughter make a dramatic
exit. This was just too much to take in one day. Hell, it was too much to
take one life. Her hopes lifted though at the idea that her son may be alive
and breathing. Her son could be anywhere and happy and maybe have a life
of his own. She could be a grandmother. No. She wasn’t ready for that…was
she? Eve didn’t bother to think about how it would affect her marriage to
T.C or her strained relationship with her girls. She knew the only answer
to that was negatively and right now, she needed something positive. She
decided to go in the kitchen where she knew T.C was brooding about Julian’s
visit. HE was her husband and even though she knew he was cheating, she didn’t
blame him. Liz was a (overused derogatory adjective) and she had secrets.
No one is perfect.
“Hello, T.C. Before you start, Julian was just here about a new doctor
he wanted to bring in and I told him no. He was just mad and thought he could
change my mind outside of the hospital.” Eve patted his shoulder and kissed
his cheek. She suddenly wanted another drink and decided on tea instead.
She knew it was a slippery slope when it came to her and alcohol. She didn’t
even take pain medication.
“Well, if you say so. I can’t stand to think of him coming to visit you.
I hate him so much, Eve. He’s nothing but bad news for our family. Make me
a cup too?” He felt himself calming down. With that calm came guilt. He
had spent his lunch with Liz. He didn’t know what it was about her that turned
him but even without alcohol, he desired her. She was way more fire in bed
than Eve. He knew he would have to end it though. He loved Eve. He was married
to Eve. She was his light, it worked for her advantage that she was sexually
wild. She was an angel. An angel that he rarely got to see.
“Come on, he saved Whitney’s life in that elevator. He saved my life in
L.A. I could be dead now, T.C. I just think its time to cut him some slack.”
She sipped her tea. She didn’t understand T.C.’s obsession with hating Julian.
She knew any second that he was going to blame his father’s death on Julian.
“My father would still be alive..”
“T.C, your father didn’t die of a broken heart. I know he must have been
extremely disappointed when you didn’t become a tennis star but that did
not kill him.” Eve spoke with authority. She had looked at his father’s health
record before he died. The man had high blood pressure and unhealthy lifestyle.
It was major killer of Black men.
“I know. He lived unhealthy and whether or not I became a tennis star
or not, he wasn’t going to be long for the world. Its just that Julian put
an extra nail in his coffin the night he ran into me. Was probably drunk.”
Eve shuddered at the fuzzy memory of that night. T.C had no idea she was
in the car that ended his career. She had no idea until recently when the
night suddenly started to come back. She had been so high and drunk and in
love with Julian. She vaguely remembered her hands hurting afterwards. She
had been gripping something…..
“Let’s go lay down. It has been a long day T.C and I just want to sleep.”
“That’s all you’ve wanted to do lately.” He said under his breath.
“What?” She could have sworn T.C said something.
“Nothing.”
