Chapter 32
A YEAR LATER
Simone looked lovingly at the picture of her father before she placed it
on her dresser drawer. Their relationship was testy at best but she loved
him and knew that eventually, he would remember that as well. She and Paloma
had just moved into their first place together. They were paying the rent
even though Julian almost threw a fit over it. They conceded to let him
pay the utilities and the cable bill because he would not let it go. Next
to that picture went a picture of the family she knew growing up and the
one she was coming to love. The later made her laugh because it was so full
of people: herself, her mom, Whitney, Chase, Julian, Ethan, Fox, Fancy, and
Little Ethan. The next picture was taken at Whitney and Chad’s wedding. It
was the five of them: Whitney, Chad, Simone, Paloma and Chance. They were
all smiling because there was so much happiness. The other pictures were
an odd variety that she never thought she would have in her room. There was
one of Fox and Theresa and their family, one of Sherdian and Luis and their
kids, one of Julian and Eve, one of Noah and a very pregnant Pilar at their
wedding, and even one of Liz and her father even though she thought Liz a
foul person . One of her favorites was one of Chase as Chance.
“Simone, baby, hurry up. I need some help out here!” Paloma yelled for
her girlfriend to haul ass. She had been having fun sitting and laughing
with a very pregnant Whitney and Chad and Eve but there were still boxes
that needed to be moved.
“I have never done this much physical labor in my life. I swear giving
birth was easier.” Sheridan complained and she entered the apartment with
a box full of Paloma’s clothes. She swore the girl had a department store
of outfits. Luis came from behind her and kissed her neck.
“Come on, Princess be nice.” He knew that Sheridan loved Simone and Paloma
almost as much as Julian did.
“You better decide where you want this bookcase, dear. It’s quite heavy.”
Julian said from his side. Chase was on the other looking as though his
muscles were about to pop. They had been listening to Paloma, Whitney, Chad
and Eve long enough.
“Oh, honey. I’m sorry. Move it to the left.” Eve jumped up to give her
husband a kiss on the cheek for his hard work.
“Oh, I’m going to need more than that. That was heavy.” Dropping the bookcase
in the right spot, he grabbed her waist and kissed her deeply.
“Wow. Are you two kissing every time we walk into a room?” Noah and Pilar
entered and apologized for being late.
“It’s okay. There is still plenty that needs to be done.” Paloma went over
to kiss her mother on the cheek.
Pilar thought it would be hard to accept her daughter’s life but she saw
how much Simone loved her and how happy she made her and vice versa. She
could not deny her daughter happiness after she had been denied it for so
long. She and Eve went to GLAAD meetings regularly and she was glad to have
her as a friend. She had lost a few when she married Noah because they called
her a fool. They warned her that Noah would lose interest and not find her
sexy for much longer. Every night, Noah put those fears to rest. Every time
he looked at her, it was filled with the love he felt. She had never known
this kind of happiness.
“Your place looks beautiful, by the way.” Pilar loved the colors and all
the pictures of family on the fireplace.
“Where is Theresa?” Paloma asked once everyone was settled with their chores
and Simone came out.
“She’s on her way. She called me from the office and said that she and
Fox had an appointment of an ultrasound. They are finding out the sex of
the baby today.” Julian said from his side of the room.
“Julian, could I talk to you about something?” Eve asked and they went
outside for privacy.
“Yes, darling.”
“I want to thank you. I don’t want to know the details, and I know you
wouldn’t tell me. But I know something went down at that ceremony last year
that caused all this happiness to happen and I know you were behind it.
I want you to know that I love you. Not because of what happened, I loved
you before that. I love you for the man you were when I met you and the
man you are now. I love that you have taken to own my daughters like they
were your own. I love that you are trying with your own and with your sister.
I know people think I’m crazy for being with you but I don’t care because
I love you.” Eve could barely keep her eyes dry while she talked.
“Darling Eve, I am who I am because of you. Without you, I would never
have been strong enough to be who I am and you don’t have to thank me. The
fact that I can wake up each morning and feel you…that’s all I ever want.
I dreamed of you all those we were apart. I dream of you now. I love you
so much, Eve. I would do anything for you. As for your daughters, I love
them as well. They are the best parts of you, I’m just glad they took to
me. I love you and our family, Eve. I feel so…well…blessed to have you all
in my life.”
They held each other in the hallway and kissed. The kiss was full of everything
they could not say out loud and everything they would give each other later.
Life wasn’t as smooth as it could be but it was everything either had ever
wanted from the beginning. They knew that nothing would ever part them again.
The End.
