“I mean it mother,” Theresa listened gleefully out side of Ivy’s bedroom
as Ethan told Ivy that he had picked Theresa. “I love Theresa, and God
knows that I love you too, so much, but you gave me a choice, and I have
chosen.”
Julian, who still remained with Theresa smiled some. “My won’t that
be a pretty picture.” He stated. “Ivy alone in this hose until the day
the rest of her body gives out.”
“Usually I’d think that was mean, but in this case I am willing to make
an exception.” Theresa stated.
A throat clearing caused both of them to turn swiftly around, and come
face to face with Sam Bennett. “Oh, Chief Bennett.” Theresa said nervously.
“How long have you been there?” She asked.
Sam smiled warmly. “I just got here.” He stated oblivious to Theresa
and Julian’s comments. His smile then faded. “Julian there is some thing
we need to talk about.” He informed. “The police board.”
Julian rolled his eyes some. “Can’t it wait I was....”
“I’m sorry mother.” Ethan’s voice filled his father’s ears. “But that’s
the way it’s got to be.”
Sam looked past Julian and Theresa curiously. “I wonder what’s going
on in there?” He asked walking past the two of them into Ivy’s bedroom.
As soon as he stepped in he could feel the tension between mother and son.
Ivy straightened from where she sat in her wheel chair, as Sam followed by Theresa and Julian entered. “Well Ethan it is clear you have made your choice.” She stated in a some what unreadable voice.
Ethan nodded his head. “Yes I have.” He stated.
Sam was positive now that some thing big was happening. “Ethan, what’s
this about.” He asked.
Ethan sighed and turned to his father. “Well I just informed mother
that I was going to propose to Theresa.” He stated taking her hand.
“What?” Sam asked his smile returning. “Oh my gosh, after all this time,
that’s wonderful.” He said embracing the two of them. Ivy only looked away
in disdain.
“Mother doesn’t seem to think so.” Ethan said after the hug. “In fact
she just informed me that if I continue in a relationship with Theresa,
she will never see me or speak to me again.”
Sam looked back to Ivy in shock. “Ivy, is that true.” He questioned.
Ivy looked back to Sam, fighting back her voices telling her to rethink her decision. “I am not having this discussion with you.” She stated coldly. “Ethan has made his choice, and picked who he loves more.”
“I never said.......”
“So now if you will all please excuse me.” Ivy said cutting Ethan off as if he was not even there. “I am very tired anmd would like to get my rest.”
Sam looked to Ethan and saw the momentary sadness cross his face. He
quickly covered it however and walk out of Theresa‘s bedroom, hand in hand.
Sam looked back to Ivy. “Don’t do this.” He said his eyes pleading with
her. “You don’t want to do this.”
Ivy looked back at Sam. “I’m used to having to do things I don’t want
to.” She stated. “Just a part of life. Now if you will excuse me Sam.”
“Ivy your going to regret.....”
“You can leave yourself, or be thrown out.” Ivy sad in a cold voice surprising both Sam and Julian.
“I think she means it Chief.” Julian stated eyeing her cautiously. “I’d
leave if I were you, this is no where close to seeing her angry.”
Sam gave Ivy on more look, and shook his head sadly. “I guess I was
right when I said the Ivy I knew a long time ago had died.”
Ivy nodded her head in agreement “I guess you were.” She stated not
facing him. Seconds later, she heard the door close, and she turned around
to find the room matching her life. Empty, and so finally, with no one
watching, she pulled open her drawer from her table and pulled out a sheet
of paper. It shined in her eyes. The sharpness of it some what made her
nervous, but she knew, that this was what she had to do. This was what
she wanted. To rest.
