Chapter XV

Earlier when looking for Julian, Eve thought she had picked up his scent, but then the sudden smell of blood erased it. Once she had Joseph safely hidden, she began to retrace her exact steps in hope of picking up his scent again.

Finally, after searching for while, she picked up Julian’s scent coming from up ahead. She would’ve felt relieved had it not been for the strong stench of Julian’s blood hanging in the air. Alarms immediately went off in her head and instead of walking cautiously down the hallway, Eve began running. As soon as she neared the door, the thick smell of his blood nearly made her nauseous. Without hesitating, Eve ran and kicked the door open just in time to see Dante jam his fist through Julian’s chest.

The pain in his chest was so excruciating, that it almost caused Julian to black out…that is until his panic filled eyes met Eve’s red ones….

Red ones?! What the hell?!

Suddenly Julian felt his body free falling to the ground below. The impact of the fall knocked the wind out of his lungs as he clutched his chest with both hands and clinched his eyes tighter.

Dante was taken back when he felt a clawed hand upon his right shoulder yanking him away from Julian just before being thrown across the room, slamming back first into the wall. Standing up slowly, he shook his head once then looked to the person who had the audacity to touch him. When his light blue eyes met those of Eve’s red ones, for the first time in his entire life…he was frightened.

“What is the meaning of this?!” he shouted, fear laced in his scent, but Eve didn’t seem to notice.

“You’re gonna pay for what you did.” Eve snarled viciously, flashing her fangs in the process.

Straightening out his appearance he said, “Is this the kind of mate you want…always having to save his worthless mortal life?! You deserve better than that!” Dante spat then pointed at the Julian’s limp body.

“You don’t know what I deserve!” Eve snapped. “No one touches my mate and gets away with it.”

“You will be mine, rather you like it or not.” Dante said completely ignoring his fear of her as he charged Julian’s defenseless body with the intent to finish him off.

Just as Dante neared Julian’s body, Eve suddenly appeared before him, to shield his body from impact as she slammed both of her fists into Dante’s chest, causing him to jerk backward and fall to the ground hard.

After that, the next series of events were a complete blur…

When Eve finally came to this time, she found herself lying face down on the cold floor below and her body feeling worst then before, but no sign of Dante anywhere.

‘What the hell happened?!’ she thought franticly.

She felt…weird…

Pushing up carefully on her sore arms, she rested on her hands and knees before taking a good look at things. From head to toe, she was covered in blood then she turned to the right and found Julian lying across the room motionless. She didn’t think she could stand, so she used what strength she had to crawl over to him. When she got close enough, what she saw made her tear up.

A number of scrapes and bruises were present on his face, his eyes were closed and he was still holding his badly injured chest. His lips were bluish and blood was crusted at the sides of his mouth. The faint stench of death of was in air, but Eve refused to believe that he was gone. Slowly she placed her right hand on his face, and when she made contact with his skin, Julian suddenly gasped and took in a deep breath.

“Oh my God…Julian...” Surprise evident in Eve’s voice as she said his name.

Taking in one short breath at a time, Julian slowly opened his eyes then blinked before fixing them on Eve’s face.

“Eve…” he whispered in a raspy voice.

“Shhh…I thought you left me...” She whispered painfully then broke down in more tears.

“You should know…that I refuse…to leave you.” Julian said, grimacing each time he spoke, before a little smirk appeared on his face.

“Yeah...I know” Eve smiled back then frowned as the smell of death around Julian became stronger.

Julian watched, as a frown appeared across Eve’s face then saw her look down at his face again.

“Julian…” Eve started but he stopped her.

“I know.” He mumbled. “Guess I won’t…be around much longer huh?” Julian whispered painfully as his eyes became glossy with unshed tears.

“I won’t let you leave me.” Eve whispered in a frightened yet determined voice. “You’re the best thing that’s happen to me in a long time, I won’t let you go.”

Another smile appeared on Julian’s face as he heard the words Eve spoke, and he knew she meant every one of them.

“I know. So what now?” he asked then gulped.

Closing her eyes, Eve knew of only one way to save him…but would he want to become something like her?

Opening her eyes, she sighed before speaking. “Julian…I only know of one way to keep you with me...”

“I see...” Was all Julian could mumble. He knew what she was trying to say. He didn’t want to leave her either, but could he really do this? Could he actually give up the only way he’s ever known how to live? “Eve…”

“Before you say anything, let me say something...” she cut him off, “If you say no, then I’ll understand, but know this, I would join you shortly after because I couldn’t live my life without you in it.” she whispered somberly.

Silence-

“I don’t know how you’ll end up.” Eve whispered sadly but truthfully.

“With any luck, I’ll end up like you.” He smirked again, “So…let’s get this over with.” Julian said then closed his eyes.

Silence-

After everything that was said, Eve was nervous. She meant every word she said to Julian, every word…but she had never actually turned anyone before. She knew that in order for her to be successful, she would have to calm down her shaky nerves and concentrate.

Suddenly, she threw her head back and stayed that way for a few seconds. When Julian decided to take a sneak peek at her through half-lidded eyes, he was met with the sight of long sharp fangs protruding from Eve’s bottom lip and her once again normal color light blue eyes staring at him...inspecting his face closely. Gently, she caressed his face and even smiled at him with soft eyes before turning his head to the side revealing his neck.

Her breathing became unsteady as she lowered her lips to the raging vein in his neck.

This was it…

And there was no turning back now…

A silent gasp escaped Julian’s throat and his eyes grew huge from shock as he moved his hands from his injured chest and pulled Eve to his body as close as he could. Eve held on to him tightly too, as she continued to drink from his neck. Before her lips even touched his skin, she used her fang to nip her tongue, so that when she bit down, some of her blood would mix with his.

After a while, she drew back carefully and stared down at his face. As she stared at his closed eyes, fear immediately took over. Since he was already dying…

What if she didn’t do it right?

What if she took too much of his blood?

What if all she did was end his life anyways?

Clearing her mind of those scary thoughts, Eve leaned back on her sore, stiff legs and began sniffing around. When she failed to pick up Dante’s scent, she stood up on wobbling legs then walked over towards the door, just to make sure her nose wasn’t playing tricks on her.

Turning back, she walked back over to Julian and carefully scooped him up in her arms. She groaned in pain a bit as her back cracked, but that didn’t matter. Next, she placed her head on his chest then sighed in relief when she heard his heart still beating. With the coast clear, she made her way out of the room, careful of his injured body in her arms and went to go get Gabriel and Joseph.

Moments later, a badly beaten and bloody Dante appeared with his left arm hanging kind of awkwardly at his side as he dropped to the floor with a loud thud. The way Eve attacked him was unreal, he didn’t think he would survive…that is, until she suddenly staggered forward with intent to slash him again before blacking out. When she did pass out, instead of finishing Julian off like he intended to do…he fled for his life.

The next day, Eve tended to the wound on Julian’s chest as Joseph stared off into his own little world. Once they exited the old warehouse, Eve stole a car that was parked a few feet away and drove them all out to the Crane cabin, since she remembered how to get there and because it was the only place she felt the safest. When she was sure they were going to be safe for the time being, just like she promised Joseph, she went back and retrieved Arianna’s body.

“How long do we have to be here?” Joseph suddenly asked.

“Until we’re all are well enough.” Eve answered.

“I am well enough!” he snapped. “That bastard killed my wife. I won’t rest until he’s dead!” Joseph sneered.

Eve sighed. “Joseph, I understand but you’re not ready…we’re not ready.”

“I don’t care about anyone else, especially that pathetic sonofab*tch over there!” Joseph spat then pointed at Gabriel, who was sitting in the corner quietly watching the two of them.

“Joseph, I’m…” Gabriel started to say.

“Don’t you say sh*t to me!” Joseph cut him off. “You were suppose to be my best friend, instead you betray…with my own damn wife! My own son…isn’t my son because of you and her. So don’t you say sh*t to me, do you hear me?!” he sneered painfully.

Gabriel hung his head in despair and shame. He never meant for any of this to happen.

“Enough!” Eve snapped, then stared straight into Joseph’s eyes. “I know you want your revenge, believe me I do too. I’ve wanted my revenge since that night a hundred and thirty-six years ago, when he took away my right to choose. He turned me into this against my will and he killed my family! So I know how you feel.” She whispered bitterly then turned her attention back to Julian.

“I’m sorry.” Joseph whispered somberly, “I just miss her so much.”

A somber smile appeared on Eve’s lips, “I know you do.”

“Will you both excuse me?” Gabriel suddenly said, then stood up and walked slowly out of the room.

Eve knew what Gabriel was going to do and sighed. She knew that Joseph was Arianna’s husband and that he loved her deeply, but Gabriel loved her too. He was just as heartbroken at losing her too, maybe more so because not only had he lost her, but he also lost their unborn child as well. The situation between the two former best friends was more complicated then ever now…and that sucked…

As nightfall came, Eve sat comfortably next to Julian as she rewrapped his chest with bandages and dried his forehead of the beads of sweat that trickled down his face. He hadn’t made a sound since the night before. She knew he wasn’t dead, so she just continued to wait. And that’s when fear took over again…

Maybe his side effects were different then hers?

Or maybe she really hadn’t done it right and was only imagining that he still did have a heartbeat…

Sighing in frustration over her panic filled thoughts, Eve began rubbing her temples gently before resting her head softly on his left arm and falling into a light sleep.

Moments later, Julian’s eyes parted slightly open, as a soft gasp escaped his lips. Where the hell was he, he thought in confusion. He then began to take in his surroundings. He felt different, but he couldn’t quite put his finger on as to why he felt this way.

Suddenly, different flashbacks appeared before his eyes. Slowly, he began to remember as he looked down and found his chest bandaged. Opening his eyes fully, he now knew for a fact that he was at the Crane cabin, but how? Then he felt something on his left arm and looked down at it. There, the answer to his question was finally answered.

“Eve…”
