Chapter II

Birds chirping outside of the window indicated that today was a new day, as the female yawned bearing her fangs before standing up to stretch out her aching back. All that she said about the mat in Singapore, she took it all back…this bed for far worst than that she grumbled.

Walking into the bathroom, she stood in front of the mirror to inspect herself before turning on the faucet and splashing warm water on her face. Grabbing the nearest face towel that she could, she dried her face and looked at herself again. Her light blue eyes were gone and in there place were light brown ones. Running a hand through her messy dark hair, she quickly took a shower and got dressed. Looking down at her appearance, she whined somberly. She really needed a new wardrobe; all of this black just didn’t look fashionable.

Walking over to the front door, she opened it then stepped out. Even though the birds were chirping, it was still dark and gloomy out. The rain had let up a little, as she took in her surrounding. Taking in a deep breath then releasing it, she walked around back and looked up into the sky. Making sure that no one was around; she jumped up high into the air and landed on top of the motel. When she was ready, she took off bounding from rooftop to rooftop.

Having spent most of last night, drowning away the pain and misery he felt from Meredith and Sam’s betrayal, Julian walked down the streets of Harmony with a terrible hangover. He had woken up a few hours ago on the floor in the kitchen with a bottle of Jack Daniels in his left hand and a glass in his right. He then stumbled out of the kitchen, up the stairs and into his room to get a new change of clothes before heading off to take a shower. Once he was finished, he left the house and began walking. He thought it would best if he walked instead of drove. He was heading over to the Sheriff’s station. He had put off going last night because he just didn’t think he could replay everything he learned again…it was just too much.

As Julian walked down the street with his head down and hands in his raincoat pocket, he completely ignored the sounds of distant chatter and car engines. When he got to the corner before the Sheriff’s station, he adverted his eyes to the woman across the street from him, carrying three shopping bags. She had long shoulder length dark hair and she was wearing all black. She must be new in town, Julian thought then suddenly without warning, she stopped then turned to look in his direction.

Neither of them moved for a few minutes as they just stared at one another. This was the first time in a century that she had taken the time to really stare into the eyes of another man. It took her a few seconds to realize that she was just standing there staring into the eyes of a complete stranger before she turned her head and began walking again.

Ten minutes later, she was back inside of her motel room. She then placed her shopping bags down on the bed then walked over to the window to stare out. What had possessed her to stare at that man back there? Staring into his deep brown eyes the way she did, caused her breath to hitch in her throat. Just thinking about him now made her heartbeat increase. She rested her head against the windowpane and sighed…she needed drink.

Walking back over to her bed, she began digging in one of her bags until she came across the outfit she’s going to wear for tonight. Once she had it, she walked over to the chair beside the window and neatly spread her outfit across it. When she was finished, she took off her black trench coat and kicked off her black boots before climbing back into her lumpy bed. Being out in the middle of the daytime was very tiresome and painful for her. Most of the time, she tried to avoid coming out into the light at all cost because of how sensitive her eyes were, but whenever she had to, she made sure she had her sunglasses with her. Darkness would be coming soon and with that in mind, she closed her eyes and drifted off into a deep sleep.

By the time Julian finished talking to the Sheriff, it was almost six in the evening and he was physically drained. He was still tired and he hadn’t eaten anything before he left home. If he had known it would’ve taken this long, he would’ve just called the Sheriff over to his house. Standing outside of the Sheriff’s station, he looked both ways before he decided to go right. He continued walking right until he came upon Grace’s Diner.

As soon as he entered the place, Julian looked towards the counter and noticed Grace giving him that knowing smile. The only time he ever came to Grace’s Diner was when he was sporting one of his infamous hangovers and nothing cured hangovers like a nice taste of her god awful tomato soup cake smoothies. Just the sound of its name made him cringe.

Walking over to the counter to take a seat, Julian waited until Grace began walking towards him, which didn’t take long.

“Hi Grace.” Julian smiled.

“The usual Julian?” Grace asked as she pulled out her notepad.

“Yeah.”

“Now you know that this is second time this week that you’ve been in here.” She raised a brow.

“I know, but this has been a really trying week for me.” He mumbled.

Bending over the counter to lean on her elbow, Grace placed her left hand on her hip before speaking. “You want to talk about it hon?” she asked.

Sighing, Julian ran his right hand through his hair. “Sure why not.”

For the next few hours as he ate, Grace listened in as Julian told her everything about his trying week. First he told about the latest book he was writing and how it wasn’t what he wanted it to be. Then he told her how his publicist was rushing him to hurry up before the deadline came. Lastly, he told her about his ex-girlfriend’s betrayal. Just bring up this situation again made him crave a drink…and to think he wasted all of this good food just to get drunk again…

“The food was great as always Grace,” Julian said as he stood up to stretch, “but it’s time for me go.”

“So where you headed?” Grace asked curiously.

“Let’s just say,” he started walking away, “I’ll see you tomorrow.” And with that Julian walked out the diner and headed straight to the nearest bar.

Grace laughed as she shook her head. “He just doesn’t learn.”

For the past twenty-five minutes, she stood in front of the mirror in the bathroom checking out her appearance. She had woken up an hour ago, then walked into the bathroom to take a nice hot shower. Considering the many beliefs about how vampires don’t have reflections or if they do, they don’t like seeing themselves in mirrors, she never really had a problem with it. Stupid vampire myths…

Pulling her hair into a high ponytail, she then ran her fingertips through her bangs covering her right eyebrow once. Checking once more, she ran her hands down the sides of her tight, light colored jeans, up to the front of her white fitted short sleeve shirt. Looking down, she picked up her dark shades then walked out of the bathroom to the front door of her room, slid on her white gym shoes and grabbed her trench coat before opening up the door and walking out.

The minute Julian entered the bar; he was assaulted by the horrible sounds of someone trying to sing ‘Ring of Fire’ by Johnny Cash and the awful stench of cigarette smoke as he walked over to the bar counter and ordered a pitcher of beer. Once he received his pitcher and a glass, he walked over to the right, avoiding as many drunken people as he could and found a table hidden in the shadows before sitting down.

After pouring himself a nice full glass of beer, he held the glass up to his lips and took a long swig of it then sat it back down on the table. Leaning back in his seat, he closed his eyes and sighed. He still couldn’t believe that Meredith wanted him dead, and Sam…why the hell did Sam want him dead for anyways?! A scowl instantly appeared on his as he raised his right hand up and placed it on his forehead. Taking a deep breath, he sat back up in his seat and grabbed his beer before taking in his surroundings.

To his right, Julian saw a few people bunched closely together, shouting and pumping their fist in the air, as they watched two drunken men go at it. He shook his head then turned to left and saw a young woman no older than twenty-one, sitting in the lap of a guy old enough to be his father, as she grinded her bottom against him hard. Just looking at that sickening sight disturbed him gravely as he turned away with a frown on his face and took another long swig of his beer before looking towards the front door.

Julian was getting ready to down the rest of his glass of beer, when the front door of the bar opened and in stepped the woman in black he saw a few hours earlier. She looked a little different since the last time he saw her. She still wore the trench coat she had on earlier, but he noticed this time that her hair was in a ponytail unlike the last time and she wore white gym shoes instead of those dark boots. She was even wearing dark shades too. He then watched as she walked over towards the bar counter, took off her coat revealing her white fitted shirt and light blue jeans then sat down.

‘Now this is what I’m talking about!’ the female thought as she ordered herself a drink. It had been ages since the last time she walked into a bar. As a matter of fact, the last time she stepped foot in a bar was back in 1973. Even though the smell of smoke and sex penetrated the air, she tried her best to ignore it. Sometimes this was the one thing she hated about being a halfling because her senses of hearing and smelling were very sensitive.

The bartender came back, placed her long island ice tea down in front of her then walked away. Picking her drink, she was just about ready to take her first sip when she suddenly felt eyes on her and not from one direction but many.

“Ugh…not now.” She whined and rolled her eyes. Looking over her right shoulder, she noticed a very tall guy standing behind her. With her drink still in her hand, she turned around in her seat, coming face to face with the guy. “Can I help you?” she said then took the first sip of her drink. ‘Oh yeah…that hit the spot…’

“Damn…” the guy said, “when I saw you walk in I thought you looked good, but you look much better up close.” He licked his lips then looked her up and down.

“Is that so?” the female raised a brow then took another sip of her drink. “Sorry, I’m not interested?”

“Why not?”

“I have my reasons.”

“Then tell me…” he said, then placed his hand on her right arm.

Finishing off her drink, she reached over and sat the empty glass on the bar counter behind her before turning back to face the guy. “My reasons are my business and not yours.” She narrowed her light brown eyes behind her shades then spoke again. “Now get your damn hands off of me.” She snapped.

“C’mon baby…” the guy cooed then raised his hand to caress her face but never got the chance to as she kicked him in the right knee, dropping him down to his left then punched him in the face. “You b*tch!” the guy groaned out in pain as he lay on the floor holding his sore knee and jaw.

Completely ignoring the glares the people around her were giving her, she put her trench coat back on then started surveying the area around her. She had almost forgot about the other stares she was receiving while handling that drunken idiot when her eyes locked on to this one particular looking man wearing a brown coat and black hat. ‘Damn it, it’s one of them, but how did they find me?’ she thought as she turned and walked out of the bar.

Julian stared in awe as he watched the woman defend herself effortlessly. Never before had he seen a woman handle herself with such authority. Finishing off his last glass of beer, he stood up then placed a few dollars on the table before heading out the door after her. He had to meet her. Once outside, Julian looked left and then right trying to find her. He finally spotted her straight ahead then took off jogging after her.

How could they have found her so fast? She made sure not to leave anything behind when she left Brazil, but somehow they had found her as always. She needed to get back to her motel and pack soon. She couldn’t stay in Harmony anymore. So into her own thoughts, she failed to notice the person standing in front of her until it was too late as she went sailing through the air before landing hard on her back ten feet away.

“So you thought you could hide from us hmm? Thought we wouldn’t find you so soon?” the guy from the bar with the brown coat and black hat spat in a deep Australian accent.

The female sat up slowly, shook her head then stood up. “How did you find me Nigel? I know I covered my tracks well.” The female spoke then wiped the blood away from her bottom lip.

“Technically…you found me.” Nigel said. “Bloody hell, I never thought you’d come to Harmony. I always thought you loved traveling to big cities.”

“Well you thought wrong.” She paused. “Why can’t you people just leave me alone? I’ve done nothing to any of you.” She whined.

Walking closer, Nigel pulled out a gun and pointed it at her. “Oh but you have.” Getting ready to pull the trigger back. “You are an unholy creature from the pits of hell and I cannot continue to allow you to walk amongst us mortals anymore. Tonight is the night you die…Eve.”

*POP*

This is insane, Julian thought as he continued running after the woman in black. Never had he had the impulse to go after a woman he never even met before. He didn’t know what it was. Maybe his feelings for Meredith weren’t as deep as he believed them to be. But then again it’s not everyday you find out the woman you cared for wanted to kill you.

When he was in close distance behind her, his eyes suddenly grew huge with fright as he saw a man appear out of nowhere and hit her. The impact of the hit sent her a flying a few feet back, landing on the ground hard with a loud thud.

The next few scenes were a complete blur to Julian, as he watched the man pull a gun out her on. Willing his frozen legs to move, he took off towards her as fast as he could. When he finally reached her, he heard the man call her ‘Eve’ before gun went off. In an instant he felt the wind being knocked out of him as he hit the ground hard.

“AAHHH!!! Julian yelled out in pain as he clutched his right shoulder.

The moment Nigel took his eyes off of Eve to look down at the man he shot, he knew he made a mistake as Eve’s fist connected with his jaw, catching him off guard. He landed some twelve feet back, before spinning on his back and jumping up to his feet.

“Don’t even think about running Eve. You’re not going anywhere!” Nigel shouted as he ran towards her.

Eve didn’t have time to check on the guy who took the bullet for her as Nigel ran towards her. Taking her fight stance, she waited until he was close enough before attacking. She threw a punch here and a kick there but no matter how many punches and kicks she threw at him, he was always one step ahead her.

“Is this the best you got demon?!” Nigel taunted as he pulled a stake out from behind him. He was intent on killing Eve tonight!

Julian was in serious pain as the gunshot wound he took to his right shoulder burned. He was trying his best to keep his eyes opened as he watched the two people in front of fighting. The man was trying to stab the woman named Eve with what looked like a stake, as she dodged his attacks. Narrowing his eyes, he looked closer at Eve’s face and noticed what appeared to be fangs showing from her mouth.

‘What the hell is she?!’ Julian thought with curiosity written all over his face. The pain then became too overwhelming and he couldn’t take it anymore as his eyes began to close again. As his eyes closed, they snapped back open instantly as he heard the agonizing scream of someone crying out in pain. Blinking his eyes a few times to fight off the darkness that rapidly approached him, he noticed someone walking towards him before everything went black.
