Chapter Two

Kay studied her cousin, her eyes peered at the tight black pants her cousin was wearing, slowly her eyes went up to the tiny red shirt with one tiny strap. "Wow, you’ve changed." Kay choked out. "I mean really changed."
"You like?" Charity smiled. "Pastels got so boring." She laughed.
Kay took a step back as her eyes looked into Charity’s, a feeling of fear came over Kay and she swallowed. "Why didn’t you call to let us know you were coming?" She asked crossing her arms. "Mom would have prepared a room for you."
Charity shrugged her shoulders. "I wanted to surprise you, so are you surprised?"
"Very." Kay muttered.
Pushing past Kay, Charity sat her bags down and looked around the house she had once lived in. "So, you never answered my question about Miguel. Is he single?"
Kay lowered her head, trying to force anger from brewing on a day that was suppose to be spent mourning the man she still loved. "No, Miguel is very happy with Gwen, but you already know that Charity. Mom has told you, I know because I’ve heard her."
"Yes but things change." Charity smiled. "People break up all the time, its life."
"Miguel and Gwen are very happy, they belong together Charity, its meant to be."
Charity rolled her eyes, "Miguel used to say we were meant to be, that I was the only woman he would ever love."
Kay watched her cousin with amazement, never had she saw someone change as much as Charity had. Her whole demeanor was different, less angelic than it had once been. She was trouble, and Kay knew she couldn’t let her hurt the people she loved.
"Actually when Miguel loved you, you were a girl, not a woman." Kay reminded her. "And he was a boy, he’s a man now Charity, and that man loves Gwen Hotchkiss."
"Ouch someone is touchy." Charity spat a smirk on her face. "I think you need a man Kay."
Kay’s eyes glanced up to the picture of her and Tarren, "You don’t know what your talking about." Kay spoke. "I had a man, a wonderful, caring man, but he’s gone now Charity. Do you have any idea what today is? The man I love has been dead two years today, so forgive me if I’m a bit ‘touchy’. Now if you excuse me I have somewhere to be and I’m very late." Turning quickly Kay stormed out the door slamming it behind her.

Beth Bennett watched as Ivy stood laughing and talking to Gwen and Theresa. She knew she shouldn’t feel like a outsider, but in her mind that’s who she was. Her husbands ex-fiancées were glamorous, Theresa the fashion designer, and Gwen the Vice President of Crane Enterprises. Beth was still just the simple owner of the Book Café, and she knew that didn’t impress her mother-in-law.
"Your worrying again." She heard a voice speak, as a arm wrapped around her small waist.
"Am not." She spoke her eyes looking up at her husband.
"And your a horrible liar." Ethan laughed. "My mother likes you Beth, you just need to relax around her."
Crossing her arms against her chest Beth sighed. "Look at her with them Ethan. The way she laughs and talks, she understands them, she wants to be around them."
"Sweetie she wants to be around you too, you just close yourself up. She hated Theresa for the longest, it took a lot to get her to trust her again."
Beth rolled her eyes. "But I’m your wife Ethan, I gave birth to her only biological grandchild and she still walks by me to talk to Gwen and Theresa."
Ethan took Beth’s hand in his, "Would you like me to talk to her? See if we can set up a dinner or something?"
"No." Beth frowned. "Because then she’ll know I’m upset, and I don’t want that."
Ethan lowered his head, "Then why don’t you just go over where they are? We’ve been married for over three years Beth, its time you let go of this feeling you have. It upsets me that you feel unworthy, because darling you are a wonderful person."
Beth forced a smile as she looked in her husbands blue eyes. Being married to Ethan was easy, but being married to the Cranes was one of the hardest things she had ever had to do.

Ericka Crane watched as her brothers laughed and joked. No doubt they were talking about women, it was the only thing that Jonah ever cared to discuss. She had actually thanked God when she found out about Chad and Justin, these were the brothers she could relate to, they were the siblings she had always dreamed of having. Her whole life she had felt like a outsider, so different from Ethan, Jonah and Jasolyn, it was until she sat down with Justin that she felt complete, and truly understood.
The wind hit her and her long pale blonde hair swept in her face. She had often been called a young Sheridan, although her hair was wavy and much lighter.
"Hey Ricki, are you coming to my game Monday?" She heard a voice call out. She smiled as she saw her sister Taylor walking toward her, kicking a rock as she made her way to the tree that Ericka stood at.
"You have a game Monday?" Ericka questioned. "I didn’t know that."
"Yeah, me and Kendra both have games. You have to come, I’m going to hit that ball so hard." Taylor laughed red curls bouncing on her head.
"Of course I’ll be there." Ericka promised. "I’m so glad you enjoy softball."
"Its real cool." Taylor nodded. "And when football starts Mom said I could be a cheerleader, just like Jada was last year."
Ericka laughed. "You don’t want to play football like Kendra did?" She teased. Kendra was always doing things to shock people, in 3rd grade she did so well the teachers felt it was best for her to skip and grade in school. When she was eight she refused to cheer like Jada and begged to play on the football team. Ericka still couldn’t believe how well Kendra had done, but then again nothing was surprising when it came to the Cranes.
"Football is for boys." Taylor spoke scrunching her tiny nose. "Just don’t tell Kenji that."
Ericka patted her sister on the head, "It’ll be our little secret."
"Cool!" Taylor giggled. "Secrets are the best!"
"Yeah, I think so too." Ericka smiled.
"Ricki, I’m glad your my sister, its so neat having a real family."
Bending down to Taylor’s level Ericka smiled, "I’m glad your my sister too, for a little kid you’re not all that bad." She teased.
Taylor’s green eyes sparkled as she grinned widely. Ericka reached out and hugged her little sister, realizing all her dreams had came true. She had a real family, with real love. They were no longer ‘the Cranes’ they were just the family next door.

Chad Crane couldn’t keep his eyes off his wife. He loved the way the sun bounced off her brown locks, as she laughed with the smile he adored. She was a woman unlike no others, head strong, and proud, yet sweet and soft. She wasn’t the girl he had met when he moved to Harmony, but at times he still saw glimpes of that person, and he couldn’t help but smile. He watched as Theresa laughed with Gwen and he sighed, his wife still took his breath away. Her belief in love was as strong as ever, and he knew all she wanted was for her family to be happy.
"You can stop staring she’s yours you know." Miguel’s voice laughed behind him.
Turning around he shook his head, "That girl ain’t never gonna be ‘mine’. She’s her on person, you should know that."
Miguel smiled, "I called Gwen ‘my woman’ once, just teasing, she didn’t speak to me for three days."
Chad laughed, "Theresa told me long ago that she was no one’s property."
"And my sister means it." Miguel agreed.
"Those two women, they’re special you know?" Chad asked. "I mean rare."
Miguel watched as Gwen laughed at something Ivy said. "So why are they with us?"
"That’s a question I ask myself everyday. What did I do to deserve your sister?"
Miguel’s face became serious as he glanced over at Theresa, "You loved her, and that’s all she ever wanted. Just to be loved for who she was."
"I could never love a woman more. She brings out the best in me man."
Miguel nodded his head as he heard the gate to the Crane backyard swing open.
"Miggs there you are!" He heard a voice as he looked up. Running toward him he saw his best friend.
"Kay what’s wrong?" He asked as Kay Bennett reached him, out of breath.
"I’ve got to talk to you, warn you." She breathed a frown planted firmly on her face.
