Collision Course, Chapter 68

“ Gwen. Come in.”

Gwen sat down next to Whitney. There was an awkward silence between them and Whitney started to speak but Gwen interrupted her.

” Whitney, let me get this off my chest. I was thrown for a loop to find out that you were my sister. That my…our mother had another child, and not only didn’t tell us about it, but gave her away. That hurt. Rebecca always had flaws. I knew that. I never looked at her with rose-colored glasses. I was about five or six when I realized that I definitely got the short end of the stick where mothers are concerned. I bucked it up, and made the best of the situation, accepting her for who she is, and all her limitations. Even with that, I thought better of her than this. I thought, fundamentally, she was a good person.”

” Gwen..”

” Robbie and I have cut her out of our lives.”

” What?”

” She didn’t want you – we don’t want her.”

” WHOAH. WHOAH. WHOAH. Who the hell asked you to cut off your mother. I certainly didn’t.”

” I thought..”

” Gwen, I’m not asking anything of you except for your bone marrow. I can only handle that right now. I’m glad to see you, because it means that I might have a chance at long life. But, issues regarding you as my sister. Your brother as my brother, and especially Rebecca as my mother – I can’t deal with it. At all. So back up.”

“ You…you don’t want a relationship with me?”, Gwen asked confused.

” Gwen, I’m making no promises. I just want to live. Can the rest of it just wait until I find out if I live or die?”

Gwen nodded. “ I suppose that makes sense. Well, I’ll be getting back to my room. I hope this isn’t our last conversation.”

” It isn’t.”

Rebecca’s cellphone rang.

” Hello?”

” Hi Rebecca.”

Thornton.”

” I just wanted to let you know that Gwen was a match. She’s already at the hospital.”

Julian could hear Rebecca exhaling over the phone. “ That’s good.”

” Real good.”

” What do the doctor’s think?”

” That Gwen is the best match possible. She’s gonna save our little girl, Rebecca.”

TC could hear Rebecca crying softly over the phone. “ Rebecca?”

” I’m fine, Thornton. I….I just wish I could be there. I mean, both my daughters are in the hospital, and I’m persona non grata.”

” Rebecca..”

” I know…I know….I can’t be there. But, you’ll keep me updated?”

“ For sure. Every step of the way.”

“ Thank you, Thornton.”

Gwen was  in her room when Ethan came in bearing flowers.

” I thought these would cheer you up.”

” Thanks.”

” So…how did things go with Whitney?”

” I guess I was being unrealistic. I don’t know if she even wants a relationship with me. She was stunned to hear that I had cut Rebecca out of my life. “

” Gwen, she’s in an awkward position.”

” I know that. I guess I’ve been watching too many movies.”

Ethan laughed. “ Maybe so. Whitney is fair. And so are you. You’re two good people who found out you’re related. You’ll work it out. Don’t worry about it.” Ethan kissed his wife. Just then, Chad and Simone entered the room.

” Hey Ethan. Gwen.” Chad said.

Chad….Simone…what are you doing here?”, Gwen asked.

No sooner than Gwen had asked that question when she found herself in the throes of a deathgrip hug by Simone.

” Thank you for saving Whitney. Thank you for saving her life.” Simone said as she sobbed. Gwen looked around the room, from Chad to Ethan and back again. Chad moved in and pulled Simone away from Gwen. “ Now Simone, you can’t go breaking Gwen’s ribs until after the surgery.” They all laughed slightly.

“ Whitney can be a pain, but she’s a good sister.”, Simone said through her tears. Gwen took Simone’s hand. “ Well, I look forward to finding that out for myself.”

“ I..um..thank you, Gwen. The family appreciates what you’re doing.”

“ I’m not doing anything that anyone else wouldn’t do in the same situation.”

“ Simone, come on, let’s go. I’m sure that they have to give Gwen all sorts of tests before the procedure.” Simone nodded and they left. Gwen turned to Ethan. “ Well, THAT was an experience.”

” Simone loves her sister. You can understand that.”

” I do. It’s just that the situation is becoming all too real for me, and far more complicated. Whitney’s a part of my family now. And, by extension, Simone too. All these new people in my life.”

” That’s not a bad thing, is it?”

“ I guess not.”

Julian knocked on the door. He heard no answer but went in anyway. He saw Ivy sipping a martini.

” I didn’t say come in.”

” I know. But, we needed to talk. I tell you that Chad Harris is my son, and you get up and leave the room. What is that, Ivy?”

” That’s me in shock, Julian.”

” You KNEW I had a son with Eve. How can this be a shock?”

” You having some theoretical son with Eve, and him being flesh, and blood, and living in Harmony is a whole other animal, Julian.”

” Well, that is the situation, Ivy. “

” Julian, just what do you intend to do about this information?”

” I ‘intend’ to claim my son.”

” Julian, you can’t.”

“ Why not?”

” Julian, your standing. Your position.”

” Ivy, this boy is my son. MY SON. I will NOT ignore him. He is MINE and I WILL claim him.”

” Alistair won’t allow it.”

” Father doesn’t have a choice.”

” Of course..”

” No, Ivy. He doesn’t. He doesn’t get a say in this matter. Chad is my son, and as soon as Whitney is free and clear of her medical problems, Chad WILL be told. I will NOT deny him, Ivy.”

” Ok, you want to be father of the year to your bastard.”

” Watch it.”

” What about Ethan.”

” Ah…here it is.”

” Yes. Here it is.”

” Well, this is something that my father DOES have control over. Ethan has been raised as the Crane Heir, and even though he’s my second-born son, he will become the Heir. That doesn’t mean I’m going to ignore Chad, because I won’t. I will make sure that Chad is financially secure. But, Ethan’s position is not affected.”

” How will we tell the children?”

” Ivy, our kids don’t think we remotely have a normal marriage. I’m sure the only one it’s going to be a shock to is Penny, and she’s a wonderful child. She’ll love Chad from the moment they meet. As for your Country Club Biddies, they can kiss my Crane ass. Chad is my son, I’m claiming him, and you need to adjust. I don’t want any fights about this, Ivy. I expect for you to be by MY SIDE when I claim my son, and present a united front to the world. Am I understood?”

Ivy downed the rest of her martini. “ Yes.”

Julian kissed his wife on the cheek. “ Thank you, Ivy. This means a lot to me.”

Julian left his wife’s room, and Ivy poured herself another martini. “ Sorry, Julian. I’ve got to find a way to stop you.”
