Guilty Conscience - Chapter 2 (Guilt Over Past Mistakes)

Later, Julian was sitting by himself on a bench
at the wharf. Eve sat down beside him. Eve tried
to convince him that she was responsible for him
marrying Rebecca. He remembered the conversation
earlier. He took her hand and stared into her eyes
sadly. Eve had never seen him look like this.
"Eve, darling, there is a way you can save your
marraige to T.C." Julian said.

"How?" Eve asked. She knew the choice couldn't be
good.

"We have to stay away from each other." Julian said. He had never felt worse in his life as Eve looked crushed.

"Eve, its not a decision I want to make either, but the more time we spend around each other, the more risk there is of getting found out." Julian said. Julian hugged a crying Eve.

"Oh, Julian, you've done so much," Eve said gratefully. "I just hate knowing that I don't know what to do to help you when you need help-" Eve said.

"Don't worry about me, Eve," Julian said, wiping away a tear from Eve's face. "I promise- I will find some way to have Liz stopped- but watching what thinking will happen to you wondering if your family is falling apart- I just can't contribute to that," Julian said.

"Oh, Julian, you haven't!" Eve said. Julian reminded her of several times when they had kissed and barely missed getting caught. He hated to hurt her again, but if they spent any more time around each other, Liz would go after Eve until Eve just couldn't take it
anymore. Julian held her close. They said a tearful goodbye then kissed each other one last time.

Meanwhile, Rebecca was waiting in the bedroom to surprise Julian.

"If throwing myself at Julian won't work the way it used to, then maybe playing nice will," Rebecca said, deciding that she was not going to end up spending the night alone. Rebecca planned on surprising Julian with a kiss when he walked into the room, but she gasped, insulted as he walked into his library and shut the door without bothering to say goodnight.

"Alright, Julian, that is the final straw!" Rebecca said. She walked into Julian's library. She noticed Julian was still sulking and tried to get on his good side by playing 'nice.'

"Whatever you're up to forget it," Julian said. Rebecca tried to hide that she was jealous but it
wasn't working.

"Haven't you ignored me enough already today?" Rebecca asked, finally having had enough. She didn't bring up that the first thing he did when he came home was go into the library and close the door but she knew if she pushed him any farther he'd be in here even longer.

"Look, I really need to be alone," Julian said. He had faked to make up for their argument earlier just to shut her up and get her to get out. She seemed to be buying it. "I really need to be alone. I have a lot that I need to think about- right now." Julian said. Rebecca finally gave up and left.

"You must think I'll beleive anything," Rebecca said after she left the library. He wouldn't fall for her act, but he expected her to fall for his?

"We'll just see about that, pookey." Rebecca said. Rebecca couldn't beleive how much attention Eve was getting from Julian. Even when their situation with T.C. and Liz and Eve's past was making him absolutely miserable he'd still rather be in there thinking about her. Fox smirked.

"Hate to break it to you Rebecca but being a Crane isn't all fun and games, country club, and bossing the help around." Fox said.

"Shut up." Rebecca said.

"Julian did the same thing with my mother, what makes you think you're going to be any different?" Fox asked. Fox walked off. Rebecca decided she'd better think of a new strategy to make Julian hers.

"I'll let Julian think I'm backing off for a while," Rebecca said. "Then- he won't be able to get rid of me." Rebecca said.

Meanwhile, all Julian could think of was how hurt Eve was when he told her they couldn't contact each
other anymore. He hated having to make that choice but T.C. would be furious with both of them if he
found out. He couldn't keep setting Eve up for that.
If T.C. had found out they had kissed behind his back recently- after finding out about Eve's past things would be even worse. He wasn't sure what to do anymore.

"Eve, what's wrong?" T.C. asked. Eve was sitting at the kitchen table, her face buried in her
hands. She rushed into T.C.'s arms.

"Oh, honey, you're so upset!" T.C. said.
