Chapter 31

“Julian…are you serious?” The thought that her long marriage to T.C. had been nothing but a fake did not bother her as much as she thought it would.

“I asked Theresa to look into a while ago because I kept having fuzzy memories of standing with you before a minister.”

“You mean that Elvis guy? That night we drank our way through Las Vegas?” Eve thought she had made that up as well. She woke up with a cheap plastic ring on her finger but thought nothing of it. Everyone was surprised to hear the good upstanding doctor talking about being drunk so casually.

“Yes, dear. He was a real minister. We asked him to keep our marriage hidden very safely so that my father would never find out. He’s actually standing right behind us.” Julian nodded to the older minister who was performing the ceremony.

“It is true, Eve. I was just starting my practice then and, though now I would never marry people so clearly drunk, I can still remember how lovingly you looked into your husband’s eyes.”

“NO FRIGGIN WAY!” T.C. lost it then. He jumped up and made his way towards Julian. He threw off people in his way and his fist seemed almost immediately to connect with Julian’s face. He could not believe that his life with his Eve had been a lie. Everything and everyone was lying to him.

“Babe, where the hell did you learn that move?” Simone looked down at her lover and smiled. They had spent the rest of the service upstairs in Simone’s room trying out new positions.

“I won’t tell you. I will tell you that I love you so very much.” Paloma placed herself next to Simone and kissed her cheek.

“I’m exhausted, sweetie.” Simone could feel Paloma’s hand under the sheet and suddenly could not resist.

They began to make out intensely and forgot about the candles that Simone had lit for the occasion. They did not even notice Simone’s foot kick one of them over. It took a minute for them to recognize the heat coming from something over than their love.

“Sh*T!” Simone yelled when she saw her room in flames. Had she not been afraid of the death of her and her love, she would have laughed at the irony of the situation. People had been telling her that she would always burn in hell and here it was heaven in bed and she was surrounded by flames.

She took up Paloma in her arms, making sure to cover her with the sheets. Grabbing a robe she quickly dashed out of the room and felt her feet burn.

“I can run, put me down!” Paloma screamed.

“NO! SHUT UP AND JUST ENJOY THE RIDE!” Simone yelled back. She did not have time for this.

A very scared and barely dressed Simone and Paloma scared the guests below who just learned of a secret marriage. Before they could question the girls’ attire, they saw they smelled smoke. The fight between Julian and T.C was forgotten as the audience tried to exit the mansion. Julian and Sheridan exchanged concern glances, something was not right. This was not supposed to be happening…yet.

“GET OUT! FIRE!” Simone yelled and ran out of the door. A host of guests followed them.

Julian made sure that he saw Eve and Sheridan out of the door and stayed behind to make sure that everyone made it out okay. Him, Luis and Sam stayed until they were sure the last person left.

“Oh my God!”

It was Sam who found him looking quite not alive. There was no time to make inquires though because the flames were getting closer.

“SAM! WE HAVE TO GET OUT! COME ON!” Julian saw what caught Sam’s attention and knew he had to hustle him out of there.

It took days of shifting the wreckage to find Alistair’s body. It was burnt to a crisp and while Sam was incredibly suspicious, he didn’t test the waters too hard. He knew what a relief Alistair’s death meant to a lot of people and was not prepared to waste good tax payer’s money on the death. He knew it was wrong, but he did the bare minimum and that was it. If he cared enough about it, he would have looked into Julian and Sheridan’s activities. Especially since not an hour after the first fire, there was a second one caused by faulty wiring in the other side of the house. Had an autopsy been possible, they would have found out that Alistair did not die in the fire. He died during the commotion with Eve and Julian’s marriage announcement. For weeks, he had been, unknowingly of course, he had been drinking and smoking poison supplied to him by his daughter, his ‘wife’ and his son. No one even heard him die or noticed because of all the excitement. Even if Sam had looked into Julian and Sheridan, he would not have found anything. Both had been too careful because the goal was too important.

The last act of Alistair was simple. He revised his will and left the company over to Julian. In the last months of his life, Julian had made him proud…which was exactly what he was supposed to think. Julian hadn’t needed the empire though. Behind his father’s back, he had been building a company for years but worked behind the scene. To the rest of the world, it looked as if the company was being run by two women but in reality Julian pulled the strings while they were co-vice presidents. Upon Alistair’s death, Julian had made sure that neither he nor his family be poor. Now, he was richer than he even he liked to think.
