Chapter 8

Simone spent the next day walking around in a sort of haze. She could still feel Paloma’s lips on hers. She spent the night remembering how it felt to hold Paloma so close to her and how she smelled. The smell was so much better when she was up close. She was in such a good mood that she decided to visit her sister. She knew that she couldn’t keep this hatred thing up forever and she hadn’t had feelings for Chad in what seemed like longer than that. On top of all this, she missed her older sister. If there was in anyone in her family who would understand her and what was going with her, it was Whitney.

It was weird to see her sister in Chad’s studio. She was singing and cleaning up around the small place. As Simone looked around, she noticed some things from their old room had made it across town to Chad’s place. In fact, most of the things from their room were in there. She smiled slowly when she realized what her sister was doing.

“So…moving in?” She was surprised that the room wasn’t locked. Nothing around here was locked, for someone that grew up on the ‘street’, Chad had a lot trust for the small town. It must be Whitney’s doing.

“Simone? Are you talking to me?” She had been convinced that her sister would never speak to her again.

“Yes. I’m done with being mad. I’m sorry I was such a monster. If you want to forgive me now, I can accept that.” She said with a smirk. Whitney could not resist her sister. She ran and threw her arms around her.

“I’m so glad. I HAVE to talk to you about something but it has to be a secret.” Whitney realized that she couldn’t keep her mother and Julian a secret from EVERYONE. It hurt and usually when she had a secret, it was Simone that she went to talk to.

“Well, I HAVE to talk to about something as well.” Simone decided she was just going to unload. Whitney went to freezer and got ice cream out for their ‘talk.’

“Okay, I guess I should say this. I’m gay.” Simone held her breath and waited for her sister’s response.

“Go on.” Whitney wasn’t surprised. It was a shock when Simone went after Chad instead of Jessica.

“Really? Okay. So after I blew up at you and everyone, I left for California and met up with a woman-- my first girlfriend, Rae. I wasn’t serious about her though. I mean we were awesome together and I was glad to be free to be who I am but we both knew it was causal. I came back here to tell you and everyone but you were all off in L.A. Weird huh? I leave and you guys come. I spent the summer here by myself and Paloma came all angry at Mrs. Lopez-Fitzgerald…she was looking kinda hot. And now, we might be a couple.” She ate the Cherry Munchies as she sped talked. She wanted to get it all out with Whit interrupting with a thousand and one questions.

“Well…Mrs. Lopez- Fitzgerald is going to kill you. But Simone, I’m happy for you. Really. I’ve kinda known for some time now and I thought you already knew and we just weren’t saying it. I think you and Paloma would be good for each other. Anyone but Jessica. I didn’t even know Paloma was into girls. Interesting.” She sucked thoughtfully on her spoon. She was glad that she and her sister were talking and sharing. She loved it.

“I have something bad to tell you. I’m just going to say it. Mom and Julian are carrying on. She swears they aren’t having sex but you should see the way he looks at her. Thinking back on it, the way she looks at him.” The adoption could wait for another sibling talk.

Simone felt the room drop. She could not believe this and yet…a calm came over her. Suddenly things made sense.

“Dad is sleeping with Liz. I came home early one day and saw them on the couch. She was half naked and he was knocked out cold. She was on top of him, Whit. When he woke up, he kissed her. I watched them for an hour before I couldn’t take anymore. I didn’t watch the sex part. Just the cuddling. I didn’t tell anyone because…I didn’t want to believe it. I wonder if Mom knows.” Simone looked down at her bowl. It was empty.

“Probably not. I can’t believe our parents’ marriage is such a sham. I mean it was great while we were growing up but now…it’s horrible. Who are these people? What do you want to do about this?” Whitney leaned back on the floor and stared at the ceiling.

“Honestly? Nothing. I got so much going on right now that I cannot take on their crap as well. I know they are our parents but come on, we are adults.” Simone lay down next to her sister and placed her head on her shoulder.

“Hmmm. You might be right, sister. I say we keep our respective mouths shut. Now, tell me more about Paloma. Feel free to include sexy details.”
