Chapter XII
They had been walking for more then two hours and all the while, Joseph
complained about how his feet were hurting and how his jaw was still sore
from when Eve punched him in it hours earlier. All of his bickering was
taking it toll on both Eve and Julian and they didn’t know how much longer
they could hold out. Eve was constantly opening and shutting her right fist
as her left eye twitched while Julian had his arms folded with a scowl on
his face.
“Can we please hurry up and find somewhere to sleep? I’m in pain here.”
Joseph whined.
That was last straw! Both Julian and Eve stopped there walking then whipped
around to glare at Joseph.
“WILL YOU SHUT THE HELL UP?!” They both snapped out loud. Eve then turned
back around and walked off while mumbling under her breath.
“What did I do?” Joseph asked innocently. Julian moved so fast that Joseph
didn’t have time to react.
“Listen here dip sh*t…” He sneered through gritted teeth as he held the
front of Joseph’s jacket collar tightly, “all of your complaining isn’t
gonna move things quickly. Now, while we’re still out here…I better not
hear a damn thing come from your mouth. If I hear anything, I’m gonna shove
my foot up your ass.” Julian pushed him back. “Got it?”
Joseph gulped then nodded quickly. He then watched as Julian started walking
to catch up with Eve before straightening out his jacket and following right
behind them but as far away as he could.
Walking for a little while longer, everything was silent until Eve heard
something snap from behind them. She then raised her hand up and halted them
to stop. Julian was confused as to why they suddenly stopped walking until
he saw the look in her eyes. Joseph didn’t notice that they stopped walking
until he literally bumped into Julian.
He was about to apologize but Eve raised her hand up again this time to
shush him. Suddenly she heard something snap again. She walked pass Julian
and Joseph before sprinting in the direction she heard the noise come from
this time. Julian went to follow her but she was long gone.
Five minutes passed before Julian heard what appeared to be shouting.
Fearing that Eve was in trouble, he took off in the direction she went leaving
Joseph behind. After running a few yards down, he found her and some unknown
male fighting. At first, all he could do was just stare at how aggressive
she fought. To think about it, this was actually the first time he ever saw
her fighting. Every other time she fought someone, he was always on the ground
in pain somewhere. He continued to stare at the fight ahead until he heard
Eve cry out in pain, and that’s when he knew it was time jump in.
Eve hid high up in the shadow of the trees as she looked down below and
watched the two people who had been following them talk. When she heard
her name being spoken, she immediately got angry then jumped down, landing
right before them, easily catching them off guard.
“Demon!” she heard the male shout as he regained his balanced and attacked.
Eve easily dodged his attack then countered it with a back flip, the top
of her right boot catching him under his chin, knocking him back a few yards.
She then stood back and waited for him to stand, once he did she charged
him. The other person who was with the male was shouting something, but Eve
couldn’t make it out as she continued her assault. Somehow when she threw
her next punch, he grabbed a hold of her left arm and twisted it awkwardly
which caused her to cry out in pain.
“That’ll teach you who’s the boss demon!” The male spat arrogantly.
“That was a lucky move you bastard.” Eve grimaced in pain while she held
her injured arm.
As the man got ready to charge her again, the other person who was with
him suddenly appeared right before Eve. Eve’s eyes grew huge from shock.
“Arianna?” Eve whispered.
“Gabriel, are you crazy?!” Arianna shrieked as she turned and tend to
Eve.
“What the hell are you doing?!” Gabriel shouted.
“I was trying to tell you not to attack her, but you wouldn’t listen.”
She sighed. “This is Eve.”
Just then out the corner of her right eye, Arianna saw two men running
their way. When she got a good look at one of the men, she automatically
knew who he was...
“Get away from her!” Julian snapped as he dropped down to where Eve was.
“Julian, it’s alright.” Eve said then looked up and met his eyes. She
could see that he was frightened for her, so she grabbed a hold of his hand
and squeezed it once. “I’m fine. He just got lucky.” She scoffed and rolled
her eyes.
“Joseph what are you doing here?” Arianna asked.
“What am I doing here? The question should be what are you doing here
with…” Joseph’s eyes focused in on Gabriel, “him?” he pointed.
“That’s none of your business.” She sneered.
“Enough!” Gabriel said loudly. Everyone stopped what they were doing,
and turned to face him. Gabriel then focused his eyes on Eve. “Why did you
attack me creature?”
“Why did I attack you?!” she snarled. “What were you doing following us
like that?” Eve countered.
“Eve that was my fault.” Arianna cut in before Gabriel he could answer
her.
“What are you doing here Arianna?”
“I wanted to see if you were alright. I had heard that Dante had you.”
“As you can see I’m fine.” Eve said then turned to Julian. “Julian, I
want you to meet Arianna Lester, Sylvester’s great-great-granddaughter.
Arianna, this is Julian Crane…my mate.”
Arianna walked closer to Julian, then looked him up and down before a
smirk appeared on her face. “Nice. You picked a handsome mate Eve.”
Julian blushed.
“Back off.” Eve growled.
“Heh…sorry.” Arianna blushed in embarrassment. Eve sure was possessive
of her mate.
“We really need to go somewhere and talk privately. I don’t like being
out here like this.” Julian said.
“Any suggestions?” Joseph asked.
“Everyone follow me.” Arianna said.
Hours later, Eve stood next to a window looking out at the darkened sky
with her left arm in a sling as Julian stood behind her with his arms wrapped
around her waist. Arianna had brought them to some abandoned warehouse on
the outskirts of Harmony. She said that it was a building the hunters frequently
used whenever they were in town. Harmony had a history of mysterious happenings
dating back to the sixteen hundreds and it wasn’t until about hundred years
ago that strange things started happening again.
“What are we going to do now?” Julian whispered in Eve’s ear.
“I don’t know.” Eve muttered.
“Where were you three going before Gabriel and I came along?” Arianna
suddenly blurted out.
“We were looking for somewhere to sleep for the night.” Joseph answered.
“I needed someplace to think. Joseph told me some things earlier.” Eve
said.
“What things?” Gabriel asked.
“I was sent here to bring her back to headquarters.” Joseph said.
“Why?” Arianna asked.
“Elder Amon wanted me to. He said he needed her because he wanted to find
out why she was able to walk in the light and why other vampires couldn’t.”
he mumbled. “The book is a lie.”
“I figured that much.” Arianna muttered.
“Why didn’t you tell me the my father was connected to the book?” Eve
suddenly asked Arianna.
“Your father? What are you talking about?”
“Uriah Warren is my father. He co-wrote your book.” Eve stated.
“Uriah Warren is your father? I didn’t know.” She sighed. “Joseph, what
else did you tell them?”
Joseph took a deep breath and began to tell Arianna and Gabriel everything
he told Eve and Julian earlier. Once he was finished, he waited for either
one of them to speak.
“You lie!” Gabriel interrupted. “That creature is not Elder Amon’s brother.”
“Yes he is. He’s blackmailing me because I know the truth.” Joseph raised
his voice.
“You all have to be lying. I grew up reading this book.” Gabriel mumbled
in disbelief. “This can’t be true…”
“We all did, but the book has been altered too many times. It was altered
so that we would believed that Eve helped Dante all those years ago, when
all the while it was his brother Amon.” Joseph paused. “I can’t go back unless
I have Eve with me. What am I going to do?” he whispered.
“Like I stated earlier, we all need some rest. Maybe we can come up with
something in the morning.” Julian said.
They all nodded in agreement then went off in different directions to
be alone.
{Flashback}
1916
For many years, Amon went unnoticed until a young hunter in training by
the name of Sylvester Northridge found out about him. He and Sylvester had
become good friends, while he was going by the name of Aaron. Then one night,
he and Dante had gotten careless and that’s when Sylvester had put two and
two together. Right then and there, he knew his cover was blown, so all
he could do was go into hiding. He hid for fifteen years until he accidentally
came across Sylvester again, this time along with a young female apprentice.
For many nights, he followed Sylvester and his lady friend around. It
wasn’t long after that he found out that the female apprentice who was with
Sylvester all the while was his brother’s long lost mate. He then contacted
Dante and on the fifteenth of September, nineteen hundred and sixteen, the
two of them set out and attacked Sylvester, but in the process he got away
somehow.
When they found him hours later, any traces of his brother’s mate were
long gone and all that was left her haste was a battered Sylvester covered
in more blood. So he and Dante tortured him for nine extra days before they
grew tired and killed him.
{Flashback ends}
Sitting up in his bed, Amon reached over and picked up the phone. He dialed
a few numbers and then waited.
“Speak.” The person on the other end of the phone said.
“Is that anyway to answer the phone brother?” Amon replied.
“Amon…I haven’t heard from you in years, what do you want?” Dante spat.
“I hear you lost your mate again. I know exactly where she is.”
Silence-
“Is she with that mortal?” Dante asked.
“Yes.”
“Where is she?”
“I will not tell you anything until you answer my question.” Amon replied.
Dante was growing impatient. “I’m listening.” He sighed.
“When are you going to tell her the truth?”
“Never.”
“She’s going to find out sooner or later Dante.”
“She doesn’t need to know anything.” Dante sneered.
“Very well. Do you remember our old warehouse in Harmony? Amon asked.
Silence-
“You’ll find her and her male companion there, along with three hunters.”
Amon paused. “Remember Dante, you still owe me.”
