The Awakening - (Evian) - Chapter Five

Chapter V
Julian sat beside Eve and placed a cool cloth on her forehead. Two weeks
went by after that night at his home, and Eve was still in bad shape. He
did his best to keep her fever down but it wasn’t enough. Once he was done,
he stood up and walked over towards the front door. Every once in a while,
she would awaken only for a few second to mumble something that he couldn’t
understand before falling back to sleep. He then looked back over his shoulder,
with a frown on his face. This was all his fault, he sighed with regret, then
turned back around.
Eve moaned out softly as she slowly opened her eyes and blinked a few
times to clear her blurred vision. ‘Where am I?’ she thought as she looked
around before her eyes rested on Julian’s back. She grimaced a little as
she sat up slowly before calling out to him.
“Julian…” When Julian heard his name, he immediately jumped and turned
around to face Eve.
“Eve.” Julian whispered then walked over and pulled her into a warm hug.
“I thought you weren’t going to make it.”
Eve was taken back when he walked up to her and hugged her. Her heart
suddenly fluttered…this had never happened before. Slowly she wrapped her
arms around his waist and rested her head on his shoulder.
“Where are we?” she asked.
“The Crane cabin. We’ve been here for two weeks now.” Julian whispered
as he stroked her back softly.
“I feel horrible.” Eve groaned, then suddenly pulled a way from Julian.
“Two weeks! No wonder I feel bad.” She grumbled.
“What is it?” Julian asked.
“I haven’t had fed since I got here.” She looked into Julian’s eyes as
he realized what she meant.
“Oh.” So that was problem Julian thought as he watched Eve lay back with
beads of sweat forming on her forehead. “Eve…” he called out to her cautiously.
“are you alright?”
Eve looked around franticly; never had she went this long without feeding
before. She needed to get out of here! She continued to look around until
her eyes landed on the front door.
“I…I…” she stuttered.
“Eve…” Now Julian was worried.
“I have…to…get…out of…here…” Eve grimaced as she struggled to get to her
feet.
Julian jumped back as Eve stood up on wobbling legs then took off running
as fast as her legs would allow her to out the front door, ignoring the blazing
sun, into the woods…where she disappeared from his sight.
He relaxed comfortably in his reclining seat, as the plane slowly began
to incline from the runway. Closing his eyes, he pictured her face again.
Did she still look the same way she did all of those years ago or had the
years been cruel to her? He could still remember the way her skin tasted
as he bite into her slender neck. Opening his light blue eyes, he ran a hand
through his short hair. In a few hours, he would arrive in America, in a
place called Harmony to retrieve his mate… “Eve…” he whispered breathlessly.
Coming to a complete stop deep in the woods, Eve leaned against the nearest
tree to catch her breath. This was not happening she thought sourly as she
slid down the tree and brought her knees up to her chest. She then turned
to the left and began sniffing around. She needed to feed. Now normally she
wasn’t into killing harmless animals, but right this minute with the way
her mind was working… it really didn’t matter.
Julian was beginning to worry as he paced back and forth across the cabin
floor. Eve had been gone for a little more than an hour now, and he didn’t
know if she was well or not. The look in her eyes before she left was what
worried him the most. Coming to a stop in the middle of the floor, Julian
came to a decision. He walked over to the front door and pulled it open.
He was going to find Eve now.
As he began walking in the direction she disappeared to earlier, she suddenly
emerged from the woods with her right hand shielding her eyes from the suns
rays and her left arm wrapped across her stomach as she held onto her right
side. He narrowed his eyes as he saw blood running down her legs. In her
haste to leave the cabin, Eve ran out into the woods without any shoes, socks
or pants.
Running up to her, “Are you alright?” Julian asked as he lifted her exhausted
body up into his arms.
“A little.” She mumbled as she rested her right hand on his right shoulder
and went to sleep.
Julian looked down at her beautiful face as she slept. ‘She looked so
innocent like this…’ He smiled then kissed her on the forehead before carrying
her back to the cabin to clean her up.
Eve’s eyes suddenly shot open as the pleasant aroma of baked chicken and
vegetables assaulted her sense of smell. Licking her lips in a hungry manner,
she sniffed again before climbing out of bed, ignoring how stiff her body
felt and followed in the direction the smell was coming from. Once she was
in front of the door that held that wonder aroma, she slowly pushed it open
and was met with a pleasant surprise. A mischievous gleam flashed before
her eyes as she watched Julian standing over the stove cooking with his back
to her. Stepping inside as quietly as she could, she closed the door behind
her then leaned up against the wall.
A few hours had passed after Julian brought Eve inside to sleep. While
she was resting, he had enough time to go out into town and buy a few groceries
for dinner. When he returned back to the cabin, he checked in on Eve to find
her still asleep then went into the kitchen to start on dinner. He was in
the mood for baked chicken with steamed vegetables and rice…so that’s what
he decided to make. He was just about finished with the rice when he heard
the kitchen door behind him open. A devious grin appeared on his face as
he realized that Eve was standing right behind him. ‘So she thinks she can
sneak up on me hmm? Well I have a surprise for her.” He thought with an amusing
gleam in his eyes.
Eve inhaled deeply and closed her eyes for a few seconds to take in the
smell of the food Julian was cooking. The second she opened her eyes, her
breath stuck in her throat as she found Julian standing in front of her
with both of his arms blocking her in. ‘How did he do that?!’ she thought
nervously as she let her eyes wander from his deep brown eyes to his lips.
Julian was about to confront her when he turned around and found her leaning
against the door with this amusing look on her face, as she took in the smell
of their dinner, which was now finished. Walking as quietly as he could
over to stand in front of her, he placed both of his arms beside her slender
form to block her in, when she opened her eyes and gasped in surprise at
how close he was to her. He then watched as she removed her eyes from his
to stare at his mouth. Julian slowly began to close the space between them
and just as his lips were inches away from hers…he was interrupted by the
sound of Eve’s stomach rumbling.
Not moving an inch, Julian stared into her eyes before raising a brow
and flashing her amusing grin. “Hungry?” he said as an embarrassing blush
suddenly spread over Eve’s face, causing him to emit a light chuckle.
“That’s not funny.” Eve mumbled, as her blush seemed to darken. She then
pushed passed him and walked over to the stove, this time earning a louder
chuckle from Julian.
Standing in front of the stove, Eve was just about ready to steal a carrot
from the steamed vegetables Julian cooked, when she was suddenly lifted up
in the air.
“What are doing?!” She shrieked as Julian carried her back into the room
she was in earlier.
“You shouldn’t be up and you need your rest.” He said as he placed her
back on the bed. “I’ll bring you your dinner in a few.” Julian said as he
walked back over to the door. “And I can’t believe you tried to steal a carrot…”
He mumbled to himself as he closed the door behind him.
Just like he said he would, Julian arrived a few minutes later carrying
a tray with everything he cooked and walked over to Eve before placing it
down next to her. Eve sat up slowly, then took the tray and placed it over
her legs. Rubbing her hands together then licking her lips, she completely
ignored Julian’s surprised look as she began eating.
“Well, I guess you really were hungry.” Julian muttered as he just stared
at her.
“You have no idea.” Eve mumbled as she continued to eat. Suddenly she
stopped then looked up at Julian. “Why aren’t you eating?”
“I did…” Julian mumbled then turned his head to hide his blush, “while
I was cooking it.”
Eve smiled then continued eating. Once she was finished, Julian took the
tray from her back into the kitchen. When he came back, he found Eve staring
out the window like she always did. So he stood in the doorway and watched
her closely. Feeling his eyes on her, Eve turned to find Julian staring at
her. Walking over to bed, she motioned for him to come and sit down next
to her.
“We’re gonna have to leave here soon, you know that right?” Eve said then
waited for Julian’s response.
“I know.” He sighed. “Don’t you ever get tired of living on the run?”
Julian suddenly asked.
“I do, but this is the only way I know how to survive. I wish it wasn’t
though.” She whispered.
Julian looked at Eve, then turned back to stare straight ahead.
“I was born the oldest child of Alistair and Katherine Crane.” Julian
blurted out as she turned to face him.
This was unexpected….
“The Alistair Crane…president of Crane Industries?”
“So you know of him?” he replied in a sarcastic tone.
“Not really, but I didn’t know you were his son.” Eve replied.
“I wish I wasn’t though.” Julian sneered.
“Why do you say that?” Now she was curious.
“My father was nothing but a coldhearted bastard. He treated me, my mother
and my sister like we were filth.” Eve watched Julian’s face retorted into
a scowl. “When my mother died, a part of me died with her and he didn’t even
give a damn about Sheridan or me. The moment my mother was laid to rest,
he shipped Sheridan off to boarding school.”
“I’m sorry.” Eve said as she placed her right hand on his shoulder.
“And then to make matter’s worst, my sister Sheridan was killed in a boating
accident while on summer break. She wasn’t even dead long before he forced
me to marry a woman I barely even knew.” He closed his eyes. “I hated him
so much, to point where if I had the chance, I would’ve killed him myself…but
someone else beat me to it.”
Eve just sat there quietly and continued to listen to Julian as he told
her everything about his life. And here she was complaining about her former
life, his was just as painful too. Suddenly turning her head to the side,
Eve realized just how much the lives they had planned for themselves never
became a reality…and that hurt a lot.
She sighed. “It’s getting late, maybe we should ca…” Eve started to say
but stopped when she felt Julian’s hand in her hair. Instantly, her pulse
began to quicken and it suddenly became hard to breath. Slowly, Eve turned
around and was met with the serious stare of Julian’s eyes. The way he was
staring into her eyes, combined with the way his fingers played in her hair
almost caused a moan to escape her throat, but she bit down on her bottom
lip and held it in.
“Julian…” Eve whispered breathlessly, “what are you…doing?” she managed
to finish as she licked her lips.
Closing the space in between them, “Something that I should have did sooner.”
Julian answered in a husky voice before claiming her lips passionately.
The moment she felt Julian lips on hers, Eve’s entire body stiffened.
Then, as she felt him pull her closer, she relaxed in his arms and began
to enjoy the feelings he invoked from deep within her. Luckily for herself
as well as Julian, they were sitting down because never had a kiss made
her feel this drunk with desire before. If they had been standing with the
way Eve’s legs felt right this moment, they surely would have hit the ground…hard.
She moved her both of her hands up to his face as he pulled her even closer
to his body, if that was even possible.
Julian couldn’t believe it. Never in his wildest dreams did he think kissing
Eve would be this explosive. Slowly he ran his tongue over her bottom lip
and Eve happily obliged him as her mouth opened and he dipped his tongue
inside to taste hers. A moan escaped Eve’s throat as she fought Julian for
dominance over the kiss. Eve then moved her hands from his face and wrapped
them around his neck as Julian’s right hand moved to the back of her head
to hold her in place. Slowly, Julian pulled away from Eve’s mouth, even though
he didn’t want to, and rested his forehead against hers.
“We shouldn’t have done that.” Eve whispered.
“Why not?” Julian asked as he ran his fingers through her hair.
“We just shouldn’t have.” Eve said as she pulled away from Julian and
stood on the side of the bed.
“That still doesn’t answer my question. Why not?” Julian countered as
he stood up as well.
“Because…”
“Because what?”
“Because it wouldn’t work out between us alright!” She shouted.
Julian rolled his eyes then began walking towards Eve, but every time
he took a step to get closer she would back away. Suddenly her back came
into contact with the wall behind her and that’s when he made it his move,
closing the space between them again.
“I know you feel something for me, just like I do for you because I can
see it in your eyes.” He whispered in a husky tone of voice. “So why are
you fighting this?”
“I…” Eve gulped nervously. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Eve seriously, is the thought of having feelings for a mortal man like
myself so wrong or is it something else?” Julian asked as he ran the tip
of his index finger across her collarbone, earning a slight moan from Eve’s
lips.
“It’s just that…” Eve started then paused as Julian continued to run his
index finger across her collarbone.
“Yes…” Julian murmured, then dipped his head down to her neck and ran
his tongue from her neck up to her chin before claiming her lips again.
Eve’s eyes closed the moment Julian’s tongue made contact with her neck.
Why was he doing this to her? Was he intentionally trying to drive her mad?!
Slowly Julian pulled away from her mouth and began to trail kisses down her
slender throat as his hands began working on the front of her button down
shirt. When the first two buttons of her shirt were undone, he trailed his
kisses from her neck down to the top of her breasts that were visible from
the opening in her shirt.
“Tell me you want this…” Julian whispered as he continued his assault
around her neck area. “Tell me you want this as much as I do…”
Julian was driving her mad as her senses went haywire. Unbeknownst to
Julian, this was the first time that Eve had ever let a man touch her this
way before. The feelings that he invoked from within her soul were oh so
new to her and frightening as well! Slowly, her mind became clear as her
hands made their way up to Julian’s shoulders and pushed him away from her
before turning to face the wall.
“ I can’t do this…” Eve murmured with her back still to Julian.
Julian frowned. “Eve…I’m sorry if I….” He lowered his head to finish but
didn’t as Eve turned around holding the front of her shirt. Julian’s eyes
met hers as she lowered her head this time.
“It’s not you,” she sighed, “it’s me. I’ve never done this before.” She
admitted in an embarrassed tone. Eve then looked up and found Julian staring
at her funny.
‘Wow…I’ve never heard that one before.’ Julian thought. Eve had been alive
for over a hundred years and never let a man touch her intimately? That really
was quite the surprise…
“You must find me odd of sorts.” Eve mumbled.
“No, not at all.” Julian said. He then looked at the time his watch read.
“It’s getting late.”
“I know.” As Eve tried to move around him, Julian kept his arms where
they were and leaned down to her left ear.
“Just because I can’t have you the way I want to yet, doesn’t mean that
I can’t kiss you whenever I want.” He stated then kissed her once more before
pulling away quickly. Once he pulled back, he stepped away and allowed Eve
to move. “We’ll leave first thing in the morning.” Julian said and with that,
exited the room.
Eve sank down on the bed with a frown etched on her face and sighed…this
was not suppose to happen. How could she have grown feelings for Julian in
this short amount of time? And why was he tormenting her so? Maybe if she
had a good nights sleep, she could think more clearly in the morning.
