The Best Laid Plans- Chapter 54

“ Hello, Bobbie."

" Dr. Newman, you're a hard lady to contact."

" I know. I had to leave town suddenly. I thought that I would have heard back from you, though."

" Why. I just stopped by because I was curious about the tests."

" Curious? Bobbie, I left a message for you to come see me immediately."

" I never got it. So, tell me, is it as serious as we thought it was."

" Bobbie, I don't know how to tell you this, so, I just will. The tests have been run and re-run. There were no errors."

" You're scaring me."

" I don't mean to. Bobbie, you're pregnant."

Jax had been trying to call Dara since their return from Memphis. Dara had said so many things to Jax that rung true: that in his world, he just didn't have to 'deal ' with an issue like race.

He truly thought that the difference in race didn't mean anything. And, on a level, between them, it didn't. But, Jax realized when Dara said that she thought that she was just a 'pit stop' for him, that she was so wrong. Up until the moment that Dara  said goodbye, Jax didn't know what Dara meant to him. He knew that he loved her, that much was true. What he hadn't comprehended, was how deep it was, and that, he literally saw his future walk out the door, when she left him in the limo. And the future he saw, marriage, kids, commitment, was all up for grabs.

Jax realized that he had been completely unprepared for the relationship with Dara.

Bobbie laughs.

"Pregnant? No. You must be wrong."

" No. I'm not wrong. You are pregnant. I had the test run 5 seperate times from 3 different blood samples. You're going to have a baby."

" No. You don't understand. I CAN'T have a baby. Maybe you don't know my medical history."

" When I got the first test back, and then the second, I couldn't believe it myself. So, I sent for your original records."

" And they told you that I had a hysterectomy."

" An almost complete hysterectomy, but not total one. Bobbie, there was enough of the uterus left, combined with your increasing age, and a freak of nature, to conceive a child. The increased estrogen in your system allowed for the possibility. Unless, you're telling me that there's no way for this child to have been conceived."

Bobbie was staring into space.." Conceived..." was all she was thinking about. Where this child was conceived. She knew when that was...it was the morning she decided to play Mata Hari for Luke and seduced Stefan in the Conservatory. She thought about the two of them, on that couch. How, she was getting  a perverse thrill out of seeing Stefan wonder what was going on. How, she was being turned on by the deception.

" Bobbie? Bobbie?", Dr. Newman called.

" Yes."

" I was worried that you were going to tell me that you have no idea how this baby was conceived."

" Don't worry. It wasn't the Immaculate Conception..", Bobbie wisecracks.

" Well, we have to get you admitted into the hospital. Soon."

" Why? You told me that the baby was OK."

" For now. There are all sorts of tests that I must run, in order to be sure. Bobbie, you are in a high-risk pregnancy. One, that most likely, won't come to term. The sooner that the tests are run, the sooner that we can evaluate what will be the best way for you to carry this baby as long as possible."

" We can't do the tests."

" And why not?"

" Because.....I don't want the tests run here."

" Bobbie, don't you want me as your Doctor?"

" I have no problems with you as my Doctor. I just don't want the tests run here."

" Ok. I have a friend, at Mercy. I could call her up."

" I wish you would. Thanks."

" No problem." Dr. Newman makes a phone call. " Arlene? I have a patient here that I would like for you to see. Bobbie Spencer.."

" No, Barbara Brock."

" Sorry, the name is Barbara Brock. I need a series of tests done. It's a high-risk pregnancy. Very little uterus left. Uh-huh. You know what to do? OK, I'll fax the list of tests over to you. Let's make an appointment for her overnight stay....Uh-huh...Got it. Thanks. Bye." Dr. Newman hangs up the phone. " Well, here's your appointment. Dr. Swanson is one of the best. She'll do right by you."

" Thank you, Dr. Newman."

Bobbie gets up and leaves the Doctor's office. She is almost in a daze when she bumps into Stefan.

" Barbara? Are you alright?"

" Uh, yes, Stefan. I'm fine."

" Were you coming out of Dr. Newman's office? Is it something personal?"

" Why would you say that?"

" I know that you are off duty, so, I was assuming..."

" Well, never assume, Stefan. I told Dr. Newman that I would help her on a case, that's all. Goodbye, Stefan."

" Barbara."

Bobbie rushed away as fast as possible.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bobbie is sitting on her couch, in the dark thinking about what Dr. Newman had told her. She was going to have a baby. She couldn't believe it. A Child, after all these years. She had longed for it, mourned the loss of her ability to have a child. She couldn't believe that she had almost thrown away not only her life, but the life of her child, the other night on the roof. But, Stefan had stopped her. Stefan. He was the father. What would he say? Would Bobbie even tell him? Bobbie remembered the ugliness that had occurred between them, at the tail-end of their marriage. How could anyone forget what happened to her then? But, she had also been privy to an entirely different side of Stefan. She saw how he cared for Sasha. He knew that he loved his children. And, he did save her life. That night, when she was at her worst, Stefan  saved it. And her soul.
And then, she thought of Carly. Caroline...her daughter. Her own child had come to town in order to destroy her. But, Bobbie knew it wasn't that simple. She knew that over the time that they had known one another, Carly had put hint, after hint out that she was Bobbie's daughter. All those times that Carly threw in her face about her dead daughter that she had given up for adoption, Carly was almost begging Bobbie to recognize her. And, she did. She did see so much of herself in Carly. Oh, why, wasn't she given the chance to even try and have a relationship with Carly?
Bobbie's eyes narrowed and bile formed in her mouth. The answer to that was simple: Luke. Luke, who should have known above everyone else what her daughter meant to her. Luke, who she believed, blindly, Luke, who she trusted, had betrayed her in the worst way. Well, she had cut him out of her life, and he was going to stay out of her life. Whatever life Bobbie fashioned from now on, was going to be one of her own making. Her own choices.
Bobbie patted her stomach. Since she knew when the baby was conceived, she knew that she would be unable to conceal it much longer, so decisions about its and her future, would have to be made quickly. Bobbie picked up the phone.
" Hello, Alicia? It's Bobbie Cassadine. We need to talk."
